Kingston to Port Antonio, Jamaica: Bus, Route Taxi or Drive

Mist over the Blue Mountains with a narrow road below in eastern Jamaica

You can travel from Kingston to Port Antonio by JUTC Route 710, Knutsford Express, route taxi, rural stage carriage, private transfer or hire car. By car, allow about two to three hours, while published private-transfer estimates are about two hours to two hours 10 minutes. The lowest published direct fare is J$600 per passenger one way with a JUTC SmartFare card, or J$700 in cash, while Jaital lists a private transfer at US$200 per vehicle one way for one to four people as of October 2026.

Your choice comes down to what matters most: a scheduled seat, the lowest fare, a hotel-specific drop-off, room for children and luggage, or the freedom to stop along the way. The route passes through or connects Kingston, St. Thomas, St. Mary and Portland.

The main ways to travel from Kingston to Port Antonio

JUTC Route 710 is the clearest public-bus option. It runs between downtown Kingston and Port Antonio via St. Thomas, with service Monday to Saturday and return trips from Kingston to Port Antonio. The route launched on 23 September 2026, with the announcement published by the Jamaica Information Service on 24 September and updated on 25 September. If you are landing at Norman Manley first, see Kingston Airport to Port Antonio routes, transfers and costs.

A public bus on a road in rural Jamaica
JUTC Route 710 is the direct public bus between downtown Kingston and Port Antonio.

Knutsford Express serves both Kingston and Port Antonio, but its current booking page states that some searches require connecting buses. Each bus is booked separately, so check the exact date, passenger type and currency in the booking system before paying.

Route taxis and rural stage carriages connect communities along the Kingston, St. Thomas, Portland and Morant Bay corridors. The Transport Authority lists a rural stage carriage route from Kingston to Port Antonio via Morant Bay, along with public passenger services within St. Thomas and Portland. These services may suit a local trip or a lower-cost connection, but ask where to change, whether the service is direct, and whether the fare is per passenger.

A private charter taxi or transfer gives you one vehicle for the people travelling together. You arrange the pickup and drop-off directly with a transport business such as JUTA, JCAL or an individual operator holding the relevant transport licence.

A hire car from a Kingston rental company lets you drive independently. The total cost includes the company’s vehicle rate and any selected insurance, taxes, deposit, fuel, child seat or other charges.

For Kingston arrivals, a private transfer may be more practical than travelling into town for a bus. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Kingston's Norman Manley Airport. The airport transfer or taxi options in Jamaica depend on your passenger count, luggage, arrival time and final address.

JUTC Route 710, the scheduled public bus

JUTC Route 710 is a direct scheduled bus between downtown Kingston and Port Antonio via St. Thomas. The Jamaica Information Service announcement gives these fares:

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Payment or passenger category Fare Unit and direction Published date
SmartFare card J$600 Per passenger, one way September 2026
Cash J$700 Per passenger, one way September 2026
Students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities J$300 Concession fare, per passenger September 2026

The fare covers the scheduled JUTC bus trip. Pack as you would for a regular public-bus trip, and ask JUTC about any item that affects your plans.

A dated report from ZIP 103 FM gives the following departure pattern:

  • Monday to Friday: Kingston at 5:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.; Port Antonio at 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: Kingston at 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.; Port Antonio at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Use the current JUTC information for your travel date, since service times can change. Ask JUTC for the Route 710 boarding point in downtown Kingston before departure.

The public bus works well when you can travel on a fixed timetable, carry manageable luggage and accept a scheduled arrival rather than a private drop-off. It may be less convenient for a villa, beach or inland address outside Port Antonio town, where you will need another local ride.

Knutsford Express and connecting coach trips

Knutsford Express lists Kingston passenger service at 18 Dominica Drive, New Kingston, in the New Kingston Shopping Center parking lot. Its Port Antonio location is Shop #30, Bayshore Plaza, Boundbrook. The company’s passenger locations are office points, so arrange your own way to the Kingston office and from the Port Antonio office to your final address.

Knutsford Express passenger points are offices, so plan your own ride at each end.

The current Knutsford schedule page states that some Kingston to Port Antonio searches have no direct bus and require connecting trips. Each connecting bus is booked separately. That means you need to allow time between tickets and check the full itinerary rather than assuming a single coach will take you through.

Knutsford states that fares are available through its live fare table in JMD or USD and that listed fares are one way. The booking result depends on the travel date, passenger category and currency selected. Use the booking system to obtain the current total.

Standard luggage includes one piece up to 50 pounds plus one carry-on. Additional luggage attracts a fee. If you are travelling with several suitcases, sports equipment, a stroller or mobility equipment, give Knutsford the details before payment and ask how the item will be charged.

Knutsford may suit you when its schedule and office locations work for your accommodation. It gives you a booked coach service, but a connection can add another ticket and another waiting period. A private vehicle is more suitable when you need one pickup from a Kingston hotel, airport arrival or home and one drop-off at a specific Portland address.

Route taxis and rural stage carriages

The Transport Authority lists “Port Antonio Via Morant Bay” as a rural stage carriage route from Kingston. Route taxis and rural stage carriages also operate within St. Thomas and Portland. These services are part of the local public transport network, so the practical details depend on the specific leg, loading point and connection.

Since July 1, 2026, a route taxi charges each passenger a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre, one way, and a rural stage carriage charges a J$53 base plus J$7.02 per kilometre, with route fares rounded. Do not add local legs together as though they were one direct Kingston fare. Tell the driver your destination, then ask for the fare, departure point and any transfer required before boarding.

Route taxis can make sense when you are already in St. Thomas or Portland and travelling between nearby communities. They are less suited to a family with several suitcases, a late airport arrival or a passenger who needs a fixed hotel pickup. For a fuller explanation of public passenger services, see how route taxis work in Jamaica and Jamaica taxi fares in 2026.

Private transfers and charter taxis

A private transfer gives you one vehicle for the passengers travelling together, with a planned Kingston pickup and a Port Antonio drop-off. You arrange the service directly with the operator and provide the exact address, passenger count, luggage details and preferred departure time.

A private transfer quote should reflect your passengers, bags and exact address.

Jaital lists the following Kingston to Port Antonio rates on its private-transfer page, accessed 15 October 2026:

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Passenger count Fare Unit and direction
One to four people US$200 Per vehicle, one way
Five to eight people US$245 Per vehicle, one way

The displayed rate describes a private Kingston to Port Antonio transfer. Ask for the total if you need a child seat, extra stop, large luggage space, flight-delay waiting time, villa access or a drop-off outside Port Antonio town.

The Jamaica Tourist Board states that private taxi fares are generally confirmed at booking. When requesting a quote, include:

  • Your flight number if you are arriving at Norman Manley International Airport.
  • The number and ages of passengers.
  • The number, size and type of luggage pieces.
  • Your exact Kingston and Portland addresses.
  • Whether the destination is Port Antonio town, Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove, Boston, Long Bay, Buff Bay or another location.
  • The total price and currency.
  • Whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger.
  • Whether it is one way or return.
  • Waiting time if a flight arrives late.
  • Any stop, detour, toll, parking, luggage or after-hours charge.
  • The meeting point and how the driver will identify you.
  • Payment, deposit, cancellation and refund terms.
  • Whether the vehicle is private or shared.
  • Whether the vehicle can reach your hotel, villa or guesthouse entrance.

For a family, ask: “Will you supply a child seat for a child aged [age], weighing [weight] and measuring [height], and is the charge included in the written total?” For a wheelchair user, ask: “Can your vehicle carry a wheelchair that is [weight] and measures [width] by [height] by [length], and does boarding require folding or lifting it?”

The private driver options in Jamaica can help you compare the questions to ask when requesting a direct vehicle. Once you arrive, Weh Fi Nyam in Port Antonio lists where to eat.

Driving from Kingston to Port Antonio

A hire car gives you control over your departure time and stops, but the rental total includes more than the daily vehicle rate. Ask the rental company for the complete amount covering insurance, taxes, deposit, fuel, optional driver, child seat and any other selected charge.

There are three practical road patterns:

The Junction and St. Mary route

From Kingston, this route runs through the hills toward Castleton and Junction, then north through St. Mary toward Annotto Bay before continuing east along the Portland coast to Port Antonio. It is generally associated with the A3 and A4 connection and is the main alternative when the higher Blue Mountain road is unavailable.

This route passes through St. Mary, so you can use the St. Mary transport operators page when arranging a vehicle for that part of the trip.

The Blue Mountain and Buff Bay route

This route crosses the mountain interior toward Buff Bay and then follows the coast east to Port Antonio. Mountain-road conditions can affect whether it is suitable on a particular day. Ask the rental company or driver which road they plan to use and what current conditions apply.

The St. Thomas route

This route follows Kingston’s eastern corridor through Yallahs and Morant Bay, then continues along the south and southeast coast through Port Morant, Hectors River, Manchioneal and Boston before reaching Port Antonio. JUTC Route 710 uses this route. For jerk on the way, see Boston Bay jerk and Portland's jerk centres.

For transport arrangements in the eastern parishes, see the Kingston transport operators and St. Thomas transport operators pages.

The Jamaica Tourist Board gives Port Antonio to Kingston as 109 kilometres and less than two hours, while a separate road-distance table gives Kingston to Port Antonio as about 55.2 miles, or approximately 89 kilometres, using its fastest-route calculation. Private-transfer pages publish estimates from about two hours to two hours 10 minutes. Plan on about two to three hours by car because your starting point, road, traffic, weather and stops can change the result.

After Hurricane Melissa, Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport returned to service after the storm, and government reporting stated that Jamaica’s major airports returned to service within 24 to 48 hours. Key corridors linking Kingston, Morant Bay and Port Antonio were reported reopened by 6 November 2025. The National Works Agency report dated 15 December 2025 listed all 29 affected Portland roads open to two-lane traffic, with 26 of 27 affected St. Thomas roads open and one blocked. Road conditions can change, so ask the driver or rental company for the route and expected arrival time on your travel date. For driving requirements, see driving in Jamaica as a visitor.

What families, groups and mobility travellers need to arrange

Families need a vehicle large enough for every passenger and suitcase. Give the operator each child’s age, height and weight, then ask whether the seat is supplied by the operator and whether its charge appears in the written total.

A coastal road in Portland parish with the sea beside it
The Portland coast road runs close to the sea on the final approach to Port Antonio.

Groups need to settle the exact passenger count, luggage dimensions, vehicle size and whether one vehicle or multiple vehicles will be used. Ask if the quote is per vehicle or per person, and whether every passenger travels together if you select a private transfer.

Knutsford publishes adult, child, senior and student fare categories. Children are ages 2 to 12, and students need local university identification. Its standard luggage allowance is one piece up to 50 pounds plus one carry-on, with additional luggage charged separately.

For wheelchair access, give the vehicle provider the wheelchair’s weight, width, height and length. Ask whether it can remain assembled, whether the vehicle has a ramp or lift, whether boarding requires steps, whether the driver can assist, and whether your hotel, villa or final address has a suitable drop-off point.

Confirm the route, departure, luggage arrangement and service terms with the operator before you travel.

Common questions

How long is the drive from Kingston to Port Antonio?

Allow about two to three hours by car. Published estimates range from less than two hours to about two hours 10 minutes, but the route, starting point, traffic, weather, stops and road conditions affect the actual time.

Is there a bus from Kingston to Port Antonio?

Yes. JUTC Route 710 runs directly between downtown Kingston and Port Antonio via St. Thomas from Monday to Saturday. Knutsford Express also serves both places, but some current searches require two separately booked connecting buses.

Which route is better, through St. Mary or St. Thomas?

St. Thomas is the route JUTC Route 710 uses. For a private car or transfer, the St. Mary and Junction route may suit you when it is open and practical for your destination, while the St. Thomas route follows the southeast coast through Morant Bay and onward to Port Antonio.

How much is a taxi from Kingston to Port Antonio?

Jaital lists US$200 per vehicle one way for one to four people and US$245 per vehicle one way for five to eight people, accessed in October 2026. Route taxi and rural bus fares are charged per passenger and are not a Kingston private-taxi price; ask the driver for the fare before boarding.

Where does Knutsford Express leave from in Kingston?

Knutsford lists its Kingston passenger location at 18 Dominica Drive, New Kingston, in the New Kingston Shopping Center parking lot. Its Port Antonio location is Shop #30, Bayshore Plaza, Boundbrook, and its standard intercity service uses office locations rather than arbitrary hotel addresses.

For the destination side of the trip, find transport operators serving Port Antonio and the wider parish on the Portland transport operators page.
