Kingston Airport to Port Antonio, Jamaica: Routes, Transfers and Costs

A coastal highway curving past green hills and the sea in eastern Jamaica

From Norman Manley International Airport to Port Antonio, you can arrange a private airport transfer, taxi, coach, rural bus connection, rental car or charter flight. The Jamaica Tourist Board gives Kingston to Port Antonio as 109 km and under two hours, so from the airport allow roughly 120 km and about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. A private-transfer price published in October 2025 is US$300 one way per vehicle for 1 to 4 persons, while the regulated public rural bus rate is J$53 plus J$7.02 per kilometre per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026.

Your exact fare depends on your hotel, passenger count, luggage, pickup arrangement and whether you travel directly from the airport or first reach a Kingston transport centre. Port Antonio town is only part of the final destination area, so give the operator your full address if you are staying in Boston Bay, Fairy Glade, Long Bay, Drapers, San San or another Portland community.

The two road routes from Norman Manley International Airport

The inland route runs from Norman Manley International Airport through Kingston, Castleton and Annotto Bay before continuing into Portland and Port Antonio. It uses the A3 toward Castleton, then the A4 toward Annotto Bay and Portland. The Jamaica Tourist Board gives Kingston to Port Antonio as 109 km, and the airport adds the drive along the Palisadoes into Kingston.

A coastal road through eastern Jamaica with the sea on one side
The eastern coastal route is longer than the inland Junction road, so allow more time.

For planning, allow roughly 120 km from the airport to Port Antonio by this route. A road trip of about 2.5 to 3 hours is a practical estimate, rather than a timetable. Winding roads, traffic, rain, roadworks, stops and the final hotel location can change the arrival time.

The eastern coastal route runs through Kingston, Morant Bay, Port Morant, Golden Grove, Hectors River, Manchioneal, Boston Bay and Port Antonio. This coastal route is longer than the Junction road, so allow more time, especially if you are staying near Boston Bay or Long Bay on the way.

Travel times on both routes change with traffic, rain and roadworks. Ask the driver which corridor is suitable on your travel date, based on road conditions and your final address. If you are travelling through St. Thomas, see the St. Thomas transport operators, and for an arrival in Portland, see the Portland transport operators. If your drive ends in Portland, here is where to eat jerk at Boston Bay.

After Hurricane Melissa, the airports and the main corridors serving eastern Jamaica resumed operations. The National Works Agency’s December 15, 2025 road-status summary placed all 29 affected Portland roads in the two-lane-open column, while rehabilitation work continued in 2026. NMIA resumed commercial flights on October 30, 2025, and the Jamaica Tourist Board’s travel-alert page states that full operations have been restored at Jamaica’s three international airports. Road surfaces, bridges, shoulders and secondary roads can still change after rain or ongoing works, so check the National Works Agency road updates and agree the route with the driver before leaving the airport.

Ways to travel from Kingston airport to Port Antonio

Your choice depends mainly on whether you want a direct vehicle, a lower public-transport fare, the flexibility of a rental car or a short flight followed by road transport.

Private airport transfer

A pre-booked transfer is arranged around your arrival flight and can take you from the NMIA arrivals area to a named hotel, villa, guesthouse or street address. This is useful when you have several bags, children, a late arrival or a destination outside Port Antonio town.

Jamaica Transfers Online lists a private airport transfer at US$300 one way for 1 to 4 persons. The published service includes meet-and-greet, airport or Port Antonio pickup, luggage assistance and an air-conditioned vehicle. The same page lists US$50 for each additional passenger one way. The prices were published October 11, 2025.

The price is per vehicle for the first 1 to 4 persons, not per passenger. Ask for the total price to your exact Portland address and ask whether waiting during immigration, flight delays, stops, tolls, parking or a change of hotel adds to the quote. You can compare the practical questions to ask in Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip.

Airport taxi or private taxi

You can arrange a taxi at the NMIA taxi area or arrange a pickup point before landing. Give the taxi desk or driver your final address, not only “Port Antonio,” because a hotel in San San or Long Bay may be several kilometres beyond the town centre.

Agree the complete fare and currency before departure. Ask whether the amount is per vehicle or per passenger, whether luggage is included, how long the driver will wait after landing and whether a stop or detour costs extra.

The published private-transfer rate of US$300 one way for 1 to 4 persons is an operator’s own price. It is not a universal airport taxi tariff. Regulated public rural transport is priced separately, per passenger.

Knutsford Express

Knutsford Express lists Kingston and Port Antonio locations and has historically included Port Antonio among its destinations. Its booking page asks you to choose the date and route, and some trips may use connecting buses with approximate connection times.

A coach waiting at a bus terminal in Kingston
Coach travellers first need to reach a Kingston terminal from the airport.

You will usually need to reach the Kingston departure terminal from NMIA first. Arrange that airport-to-terminal connection separately, then allow time for immigration, baggage collection and travel through Kingston.

The current fare is date-specific. Select your travel date on the Knutsford Express schedule or contact the company for the departure time, connection details and ticket price. Knutsford Express is often more suitable for a solo traveller or couple travelling with manageable luggage than for a large family needing door-to-door service.

Rural bus and route taxi

Rural stage carriages and route taxis connect Kingston with eastern Jamaica. You may need to travel from NMIA to a Kingston loading point, then use one direct rural service or several vehicles toward Portland.

From July 1, 2026, the regulated rural stage carriage (rural bus) rate is J$53 base fare plus J$7.02 per kilometre, per passenger, one way. Route-specific fares are rounded, so ask the conductor for the Kingston to Port Antonio fare before boarding. This is a per-person public-transport fare. See Jamaica taxi fares in 2026 for the full rates. It does not include airport pickup, private meet-and-greet, luggage assistance, flight-delay waiting or a direct ride to your hotel.

For route taxi sections, the regulated rate is J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026. The fare depends on the particular route, so ask the driver for the amount before boarding.

Read Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them if you are arranging several rural connections. For the Kingston part of the trip, Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis explains the main urban transport choices.

JUTC bus

Jamaica Urban Transit Company buses serve the Kingston urban network. Use JUTC for an airport or Kingston connection where the route suits you, then arrange the rural section toward Port Antonio separately.

A JUTC fare is not a Port Antonio fare. If you are considering a JUTC connection, ask JUTC for the current route and fare, then allow time to transfer to rural transport.

Rental car

A rental car gives you control over the final stops and can make sense if you plan to travel around Portland after arriving. Pickup is arranged through the rental company at or near NMIA, subject to the vehicle being available for your dates.

The full price depends on the vehicle, rental period, insurance, deposit, fuel, mileage, one-way charges and optional equipment. Ask for the written total, driving requirements, roadside arrangements and return terms before paying. The guide to Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules covers the practical points to settle before taking the wheel.

For one direct transfer, compare the rental total with a private vehicle price. A rental may become more useful when your Portland plans include several separate trips, but parking, fuel and the drive back to Kingston also form part of the cost.

Charter flight and Ken Jones Aerodrome

Ken Jones Aerodrome is at St. Margaret’s Bay in Portland and serves the Port Antonio area. A charter flight may be arranged through a domestic or charter-air operator that holds the required Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority licence or permit, with a separate ground connection from the aerodrome to your accommodation.

AirLink Express advertises charter flights to Jamaican airports and aerodromes. Its published information explains that charter passengers pay for exclusive aircraft use on a specified route. Ask for the aircraft, baggage allowance, passenger capacity, landing point, operating permit and ground-transfer arrangement.

The Jamaica Tourist Board lists domestic aviation options in Jamaica, while the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority explains that scheduled services require licences and non-scheduled services require permits. Use the Domestic Flights in Jamaica: Flying Between Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril page for wider airport comparisons.

Ken Jones is closer to Port Antonio than NMIA, but flight availability and charter prices depend on the date, aircraft and operator. Request a dated quotation before making other bookings.

Published prices for the trip

The figures below belong to different services and units. Do not average them or treat a public-transport fare as the price of a private car.

What to arrange before you travel

Give the transport provider your flight number, arrival date, passenger count, number of bags and the exact address in Portland. “Port Antonio” may not be enough for a hotel or villa outside town. If you are already in Kingston, see Kingston to Port Antonio by bus, route taxi or drive.

Luggage loaded beside a car at an airport pickup area
Settle the vehicle, bag count and exact Portland address before pickup.

Settle these points in writing:

  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger.
  • One way or return.
  • Airport pickup, meet-and-greet and luggage assistance.
  • Waiting time if the flight is delayed.
  • Flight monitoring, if included.
  • Meeting point at NMIA.
  • Driver identification and vehicle details.
  • Payment method, deposit and cancellation terms.
  • Extra charges for stops, detours, food breaks or hotel changes.
  • Tolls, parking, ferry charges or other fees.
  • Expected road corridor and how the route may change after rain or roadworks.

For a family, ask for the vehicle’s seating capacity with luggage loaded, a child seat or booster seat for each child, seatbelts at every passenger position, stroller space and the exact waiting arrangement during immigration and baggage collection.

For a group, ask how many large suitcases fit in the vehicle, whether everyone and every bag travels together, whether a minibus is available and how additional passengers change the price.

For a traveller with mobility needs, ask about step height, door width, wheelchair loading, a ramp or lift, folding wheelchairs, power chairs, scooters, airport pickup access and any equipment fee. AirLink Express says mobility aids are carried free on its flights under its baggage rules, with advance assistance requests.

Use one clear question when you contact the operator: “What vehicle will carry this number of passengers and bags from NMIA to this exact address, and what is the full price in the quoted currency?” If you land hungry before the long drive, here is where to eat near Kingston's Norman Manley Airport.

Airport, road and service status

NMIA closed at 8:00 p.m. on October 25, 2025, before Hurricane Melissa. Relief flights resumed on October 29, commercial flights resumed on October 30, and later government updates stated that NMIA, Ian Fleming International Airport and domestic aerodromes had resumed operations.

A winding road through green hills in Portland parish
Winding Portland roads can slow the drive, especially after rain.

Port Antonio harbour reopened on November 3, 2025. Government updates also reported restored access along the Port Antonio to Morant Bay corridor, the Morant Bay to Kingston corridor and the Kingston to Agualta Vale route through Junction Road.

The National Works Agency reported continued rehabilitation work in 2026. For a current departure, check the NWA post-Hurricane Melissa updates, ask the driver which route is open for your address and check your flight with the airline. Once you reach town, Weh Fi Nyam in Port Antonio lists where to eat.

Common questions

How far is Port Antonio from Kingston airport?

Port Antonio is roughly 120 km by road from Norman Manley International Airport by the Junction road; the Jamaica Tourist Board gives Kingston to Port Antonio as 109 km. The coastal route through St. Thomas is longer. The final distance depends on the road corridor and whether your accommodation is in town, Boston Bay, San San, Long Bay or another Portland community.

How long is the drive from Kingston to Port Antonio?

The Jamaica Tourist Board gives less than two hours from Kingston, so allow about 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport, with extra time for baggage collection, traffic through Kingston, stops, rain, roadworks and the final hotel address. The travel time is an estimate, not a scheduled arrival time.

Is there a bus from Kingston to Port Antonio?

Yes. Knutsford Express lists Kingston and Port Antonio passenger locations, and rural buses and route taxis serve eastern Jamaica. Rural buses charge J$53 plus J$7.02 per kilometre per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026, so ask the conductor for the fare before boarding, while the current Knutsford fare depends on your travel date.

What is the best airport for Port Antonio?

For an international flight already booked into Kingston, Norman Manley International Airport is a practical arrival point followed by a road transfer. Ian Fleming International Airport near Boscobel is closer to Port Antonio, while Ken Jones Aerodrome is in Portland and may be available for charter service.

How much is a taxi from Kingston airport to Port Antonio?

A private operator publishes US$300 one way per vehicle for 1 to 4 persons, plus US$50 for each additional passenger one way. The regulated rural bus rate is a per-passenger public-transport fare, not an airport taxi price.
