JUTC Buses in Jamaica: Routes, Fares and the Montego Bay Service

Early morning light along a wide highway heading toward distant blue mountains

JUTC buses connect Kingston, St. Andrew, Portmore and Spanish Town through regular, express and premium services, with rural routes extending into other parishes. Published fare examples run from J$50 for some regular SmartFare trips to J$550 cash on Route 610, with premium timetable examples of J$200 to J$230, while Route 620Ex links Half-Way Tree and Montego Bay in about two hours and 45 minutes to two hours and 50 minutes on its dated timetable.

Your first step is to identify the route number, direction, boarding point, operating day, service class and payment method. Then use the current JUTC route directory or timetable before you leave, since schedules and fares vary by route.

Where JUTC buses operate

JUTC’s main public-transit area is the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region, known as the KMTR. It covers Kingston, St. Andrew, Portmore and Spanish Town in St. Catherine. Regular routes serve everyday trips within this area, while express and premium services connect larger transport centres and surrounding communities.

The route directory also includes rural express, rural stage-carriage and rural school-bus services outside the KMTR. Published route information reaches parishes including Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland and St. Thomas.

The directory describes approximately 200 routes across Kingston and surrounding areas. That figure includes regular, express, premium, special-access and rural routes, so it is not the number of one single type of bus service.

For Kingston-area trips, start with the transport operators in Kingston if you need a taxi or transfer alongside the bus, then search by your starting community, destination or route number. Important hubs named in JUTC material include Half-Way Tree Transport Centre, Downtown Transport Hub, South Parade, Cross Roads, New Kingston, Spanish Town Bus Park, Greater Portmore, Naggo Head and Christian Gardens. If you are waiting at Half-Way Tree, here is where to eat in Half Way Tree.

JUTC’s 2026 operating plan includes expansion of Montego Bay operations. For trips around the western city, the transport operators serving St. James can help you compare a scheduled bus with private transfers, taxis, charters and car rentals.

Choosing between regular, express, premium and rural services

The service class affects the route pattern, stopping points, fare and travel time.

Express and premium services are intended for longer or faster connections.

A regular route is designed for local connections and may serve several communities along the way. Route 9, for example, connects Naggo Head and Spanish Town. Route 52B links Castleton Gardens and Half-Way Tree on weekdays.

Express and premium services are intended for longer or faster connections, often using major roads or the toll road. Route 620Ex between Kingston and Montego Bay is a premium express service. Other premium timetable examples show fares of J$200, J$220 and J$230, depending on the route.

Rural services extend JUTC coverage beyond the KMTR. Rural route notices include connections such as Chapelton to May Pen and Linstead to Spanish Town. The transport operators in St. Catherine are useful when your trip begins in Spanish Town, Linstead or Portmore and continues toward Kingston.

When choosing a service, compare the route number, direction, first and last departure, number of stops, fare and boarding location. A lower fare may suit an everyday commute, while a premium or express bus may make more sense when you are travelling farther and want a scheduled connection with fewer stops.

JUTC fares and payment

There is no single JUTC fare. The amount depends on the route, service class, direction and passenger category. The figures below are in Jamaican dollars and carry the date of the relevant notice.

These are dated examples, not one current fare for every JUTC bus. Use the exact route notice or ask JUTC for the current fare before paying, particularly when you are travelling on a premium or rural service.

JUTC accepts cash and its rechargeable SmartFare card. SmartFare cards are available at Half-Way Tree Transport Centre, Downtown Transport Hub, Greater Portmore Office and Spanish Town Layby. JUTC says a card balance can be transferred if the card is lost or stolen.

A SmartFare mobile app has been described by JUTC as forthcoming. For now, plan around cash or a physical SmartFare card unless JUTC gives you a different current payment instruction.

If you are comparing bus and route taxi prices, keep the services separate. A JUTC fare is a scheduled bus fare per passenger. A private transfer or charter is arranged directly with the operator and may be priced per vehicle, so ask for the total amount, currency and payment terms before accepting it. You can compare the wider fare picture in Jamaica taxi fares for 2026.

How to find a JUTC route and timetable

The JUTC Bus Routes page lets you search by route number, stop name or community. It separates regular, express, premium, special-access, rural express and other rural routes.

Check the direction first, since a route can have different times each way.

Start with your origin and destination, then check the direction. A route may have different departure times in each direction, and a service that passes near your destination may board at a different hub than the one you first expect.

JUTC route-specific timetable PDFs identify the origin, destination, intermediate points, direction, operating days and departure times. Read the start and end dates on the timetable because some schedules apply to a season or a limited period.

JUTC describes the route directory data as indicative and directs passengers to verify times at jutc.gov.jm. Check the official website again before travelling if your trip falls near a holiday, a timetable change or a service announcement.

The transport operators in Kingston can help you find local transport businesses and alternative services around the main hubs. If your trip continues outside the city, compare the scheduled bus with a coach, route taxi or private vehicle before deciding.

Route 620Ex from Kingston to Montego Bay

Yes, JUTC operates a Kingston to Montego Bay service. Route 620Ex is a premium express bus between Half-Way Tree and the Montego Bay Bus Park via the toll road. The published timetable also lists Mammee Bay as an intermediate point, placing the route through the north-coast corridor in St. Ann before it reaches Montego Bay.

The timetable published for service starting 1 October 2025 lists Monday-to-Saturday departures in both directions.

Direction Departures Listed arrival times
Montego Bay Bus Park to Half-Way Tree 5:10 a.m., 8:45 a.m., 5:15 p.m., 8:20 p.m. 7:55 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 8:00 p.m., 11:05 p.m.

The scheduled durations are approximately two hours and 45 minutes to two hours and 50 minutes. These are timetable times, so allow more time if you have an appointment, a flight or a connection after arrival.

Route 620Ex runs between Half-Way Tree and Montego Bay Bus Park, not to Sangster International Airport. If you are arriving at the airport, arrange transport from the airport desk or set up a private transfer to your accommodation. For a comparison of private airport arrangements, see Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip.

Before travelling, ask JUTC for the current Route 620Ex fare per passenger in Jamaican dollars, along with the boarding procedure, seat availability and payment method. If you arrive in Montego Bay hungry, see the guide to the best restaurants in Montego Bay.

You can also compare the bus with Montego Bay to Kingston transport options, especially if you need hotel pickup, a flexible departure or room for several bags.

Rural school-bus services and student cards

JUTC’s National Rural School Bus Programme provides scheduled school transport outside the KMTR. JUTC driver-service material says the national rural school-bus service began on 1 September 2025 and covers thirteen parishes grouped into seven operational zones.

The rural school-bus programme runs scheduled routes outside the KMTR.

The February 2026 schedule includes routes in St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth and other rural areas. Examples include Montego Bay to Green Pond, Seaford to Montego Bay, Montego Bay to Maroon Town, Rose Hall to Spot Valley, Struie to Montego Bay and Savanna-la-Mar to Negril.

The rural student card is used for subsidised fares on the rural school-bus programme. In 2026, the Jamaica Information Service reported that schools were being urged to distribute more than 4,000 JUTC student cards.

Students and parents should arrange registration and card distribution through the school or JUTC before relying on the concession fare. Ask which route accepts the card, when the subsidy applies and what payment is needed if the card is unavailable.

For western rural trips, the transport operators serving Westmoreland may also help you arrange a route taxi, charter or private vehicle when the school-bus schedule does not match your plans.

Families, groups and passengers with mobility needs

JUTC fleet information describes thirty Golden Dragon Triumph coaches as premium and rural-express coaches, including three with wheelchair lifts. It also describes Yutong ZK6126HG buses as low-entry buses with access for seniors, passengers with disabilities and parents travelling with strollers.

The Yutong fleet description lists two designated spaces on those buses. JUTC’s regular route information also includes a category for special routes for persons with disabilities.

For a particular departure, ask JUTC whether the route will use an accessible vehicle, whether a wheelchair or mobility aid can be accommodated, and whether a stroller must be folded. Also ask whether a child seat may be used and whether the bus has a suitable restraint.

Groups should ask how boarding works for the intended departure. JUTC stated in June 2026 that seats are not reserved for people who are not already onboard. If your group needs to sit together, arrive with enough time for boarding and ask the transport centre about the process for that service.

If you plan to use Route 620Ex, ask JUTC whether a wheelchair-lift coach will operate on the exact departure you plan to use.

Luggage on scheduled JUTC buses

JUTC stated in September 2026 that its existing terms placed luggage and personal belongings at the passenger’s own risk and excluded company liability for loss or damage. The company said it was reviewing its luggage management after a passenger reported a missing bag on a Kingston to Montego Bay express trip.

Keep valuables and essential documents with you, and identify every bag.

The review included possible passenger, baggage or luggage tags and stronger procedures for items left at JUTC facilities. Treat those as proposed changes until JUTC gives you the current procedure.

Before boarding Route 620Ex, ask about the current luggage handling process, the number and size of bags permitted, where bags are placed, whether luggage tags are being used and how left-behind items are handled. Keep valuables and essential documents with you, and identify every bag.

If you are travelling with several suitcases, sports equipment or a stroller, compare the scheduled bus with a private transfer or charter. Give the operator your passenger count, bag count and bag sizes, then ask whether the quoted price is per vehicle or per person.

What to settle before travelling

For a scheduled JUTC bus, write down these details before you leave:

  • Route number and direction
  • Boarding hub, bus park or stop
  • Operating day
  • Departure time
  • Service class
  • Current fare
  • Cash or SmartFare payment
  • Concession eligibility
  • Expected arrival time
  • Luggage handling
  • Accessibility arrangements, if needed

A private airport transfer has a different set of details. Give the operator your flight number and arrival time, passenger count, number and size of bags, exact hotel name or street address, child-seat requirement, meeting point and preferred payment method. Ask for the total price and currency, whether it is per vehicle or per person, the waiting time if your flight is late, and the cancellation or amendment terms.

For driving yourself, check the current requirements before collecting a rental car. The Jamaica visitor driving guide explains the documents, road rules and practical arrangements to consider.

Check JUTC service notices for any Hurricane Melissa update affecting your departure.
