Jamaica Taxi Fares 2026: Route Taxi and Bus Fares Explained

From July 1, 2026, Jamaica’s published public passenger fares include J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre for route taxis, J$53 plus J$7.02 per kilometre for rural stage carriages, and J$375 plus J$75 per kilometre for hackney carriage taxis. A JUTC bus uses a route-specific fare, while an airport transfer, charter or private taxi is priced separately, usually per vehicle. Compare each price in its own currency and unit.

The 2026 public transport increase

Cabinet approved a 16% increase for public passenger vehicle operators, which took effect in two phases: a first 8% increase on June 2, 2026 and an additional 8% increase on July 1, 2026.

Route taxi fares are regulated and charged per passenger.

The July rates below apply to regulated public passenger services. They are not standard prices for private airport transfers, tourist taxis, charters or hotel-to-hotel bookings.

Service Base fare Additional rate Other charges
Route taxi J$132 J$8.64 per kilometre Route fares are calculated and rounded
Rural stage carriage J$53 J$7.02 per kilometre Route fares are calculated and rounded
Hackney carriage taxi J$375 J$75 per kilometre J$39 per five minutes waiting; J$1,197 long hire

The published figures are in Jamaican dollars and generally apply per passenger for the stated public route or taxi service. A private vehicle quote has a different basis. It may cover the whole vehicle, one direction, a return trip or a set period of hire.

The Ministry gave these route examples, all per passenger:

Route Before the increase After the June 2 phase From July 1, 2026
St. Ann’s Bay to Ocho Rios, route taxi J$200 J$220 J$240
Eltham Park to Spanish Town, route taxi J$160 J$170 J$190
Ocho Rios to Kingston, rural stage carriage J$560 J$610 J$660
Mandeville to May Pen, rural stage carriage J$290 J$310 J$330

These are passenger fares for the named public routes. They do not include a private vehicle, a hotel pickup, waiting, luggage handling, sightseeing stops or a door-to-door deviation.

How route taxi fares are calculated

A route taxi operates as a stage carriage on a specified route. The Transport Authority sets the fare using the route and distance. Its published formula is:

Base rate + distance travelled in kilometres × rate per kilometre

For July 2026, the route taxi calculation uses a J$132 base rate and J$8.64 per kilometre. The calculated amount is rounded to the nearest J$5 under the Authority’s published fare guidance.

Route tables printed or posted before June 2026 show the old, lower amounts, so tell the driver your destination and ask for the fare before you board. The Transport Authority fare tables explain how route taxis, rural stage carriages and hackney carriages are charged.

Before you pay, identify the exact starting point, destination and direction. A route taxi fare is usually per passenger for the stated section. It does not automatically include exclusive use of the vehicle, an extra stop, a waiting period or a change from the approved route.

For a public trip beginning in the capital, the Kingston operators directory can help you continue from a transport centre or route stop. If the trip starts or ends in the north coast, the St. Ann operators directory covers transport providers serving that parish.

JUTC fares depend on the route and payment method

JUTC publishes fares by route and service type, so the amount changes according to the service and how you pay.

JUTC fares depend on the route, service class and how you pay.

JUTC Route 9 between Naggo Head and Spanish Town (notice effective March 24, 2025) and rural Route 605 between Linstead and Spanish Town (notice effective January 27, 2025) list these fares, per passenger:

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Passenger Route 9 Route 605
Adult, SmartFare J$50 J$100
Adult, cash J$100 J$150
Senior, SmartFare J$25 J$50
Child, student or person with disabilities, SmartFare J$20 J$50

Route 605 also lists a cash concession amount of J$150. A passenger using another route needs the fare for that route rather than assuming Route 9 prices apply.

For premium service, Route 311 between Catherine Estates and Cross Roads lists J$200 with SmartFare.

The fare can therefore change with the route, service class, passenger category and payment method. Ask JUTC for the specific route, especially when comparing regular, rural, express and premium services. For a wider connection between Kingston and western parishes, the Knutsford Express routes, schedules and fares guide explains how an intercity coach differs from a public route taxi or bus.

Public fare or private vehicle quote?

A route taxi carries passengers along an approved route. A contract carriage is hired as a whole vehicle for an agreed rate or sum. An express carriage charges separate fares for individual passengers. The Transport Authority describes these as different service types.

That distinction matters at the airport. A route taxi fare cannot be used as the price for a private pickup from Sangster International Airport to a hotel. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport. A hackney carriage rate also does not create one universal price for every JUTA, JCAL or other contract-carriage transfer.

Private airport transfers and charters are normally priced after you provide the itinerary. The quote may depend on:

  • Vehicle type and passenger capacity.
  • One-way or return travel.
  • Exact pickup and drop-off points.
  • Number, size and type of bags.
  • Waiting time.
  • Flight delays.
  • Additional stops.
  • Tolls, parking or attraction visits.
  • Child seats or accessibility equipment.
  • Payment currency and method.

At Sangster International Airport, MBJ Airports Limited lists JUTA and JCAL as the two airport taxi companies and provides their contact details on its taxi cabs page. The airport also lists transfer and tour operators through its transfer and tour operator directory.

An operator’s own price remains that operator’s commercial price for the stated date and service. Royal Passage Tours publishes zone-based prices in US dollars, with different amounts for destination, passenger count and one-way or round-trip travel. Other companies provide a quote after receiving the full itinerary.

For a pickup at Norman Manley International Airport, a private transfer to New Kingston or another Kingston address should be priced as a private service. The Kingston Airport to New Kingston transport guide covers the differences between taxis, buses and private arrangements.

Airport, intercity and parish transport

Your starting point changes the useful comparison.

An airport arrivals hall with a taxi desk
Private airport transfers are priced as a separate service from public fares.

At Sangster International Airport, you can arrange an airport taxi, private transfer, rental car or a connection to another parish. A visitor going to Negril, Ocho Rios or Treasure Beach should provide the exact hotel or address, not only the town name. The airport taxi desk or private operator can then price the correct destination, luggage and waiting terms. For a south coast stay, the Montego Bay Airport to Treasure Beach routes show what that longer run involves.

For a trip between Montego Bay and Kingston, compare an intercity coach, a private vehicle, a domestic flight or a rental car. A public route taxi may require several changes and is priced per passenger for each relevant route section. The Montego Bay to Kingston transport guide sets out the main options and the type of fare attached to each.

A trip along the north coast can involve Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay, Falmouth or Montego Bay. Route taxis can suit a passenger travelling between covered points, while a private vehicle may suit a group carrying bags between exact addresses. Cruise passengers should provide the terminal name and the time available before returning to the ship, and can see where to eat near Falmouth Cruise Port before they head back. The Falmouth Cruise Port transport guide focuses on taxis, tours and connections from the terminal.

A resident travelling between Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore may compare a JUTC route, a route taxi or a private taxi. SmartFare prices, cash fares and route changes can affect the total. The Portmore to Kingston commuting guide covers buses, route taxis and the toll-road option.

What families and groups need to arrange

Give the operator the full passenger count, including children, before receiving a vehicle quote. Also provide the number and size of bags. A vehicle with enough seats may not have enough room for suitcases, strollers or other equipment.

Families should give the number and ages of children and request the required infant, child or booster seat. Published policies vary:

  • Best Jamaica Tours states that child and infant seats are available on private airport transfers at no extra charge, subject to booking details.
  • Royal Passage Tours lists child seats on request.
  • Torano Tours states that child, toddler and booster seats are available on request and that an extra fee may apply.
  • JUTA Tours Taxi lists child and booster seats on request.

Small parties may use a sedan. Published operator guidance also describes Toyota Noah or similar vehicles for small groups with more luggage, Toyota Hiace vans for approximately four to nine passengers depending on luggage, and Coaster buses for larger groups. Extra vehicles may be needed when bags take up seating space.

Ask this exact question when a child seat matters: “Can you provide the correct infant, child or booster seat for each child’s age and size, and is there an extra charge?”

Travellers using wheelchairs should provide:

  • Whether the passenger remains seated in the wheelchair during travel.
  • Manual or powered wheelchair type.
  • Folded dimensions and weight.
  • Whether a ramp, lift, tie-down system or transfer seat is needed.
  • Number of accompanying passengers and bags.
  • Whether the vehicle must enter a hotel, airport or cruise-port access area.

Jamaica Wheelchair Taxi publishes accessible vans for up to six people plus one wheelchair passenger, or four people plus two wheelchair passengers, with luggage limits depending on the arrangement. Ask for the vehicle type and space available for your date.

Details to settle before paying

Arrange the following in writing:

  • Flight number and arrival or departure date.
  • Passenger count, including children.
  • Number, size and type of bags.
  • Child-seat or booster-seat requirements.
  • Exact hotel, villa, residence, port or street address.
  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the amount is per vehicle or per person.
  • Whether it is one way, return or a day hire.
  • Waiting time included after landing or at stops.
  • The charge if a flight is delayed.
  • Meeting point and driver identification procedure.
  • Payment method, deposit, balance and cancellation terms.
  • Tolls, parking, luggage assistance and extra stops.
  • Whether the driver waits during a return or sightseeing itinerary.

At an airport, ask the taxi desk for the total fare to your hotel before leaving the terminal. For a private booking, ask the operator to place the inclusions and extra charges in the written quote.

Use one currency at a time when comparing prices. A J$240 route taxi fare from St. Ann’s Bay to Ocho Rios is a public passenger amount from July 1, 2026. A US-dollar private transfer quote for a vehicle between an airport and a hotel is a separate commercial price. Do not combine them as if they describe the same service.

In May 2026, operators threatened industrial action while the fare increase was delayed. On May 18, the Jamaica Gleaner reported that operators were restive and that public transportation continued operating that day. On May 19, a report titled “No strike, but tension builds over delayed taxi fare hike” described preparations for possible protest action after a voice note circulated.

Disputes over the new amounts were reported in Spanish Town in June 2026.

The government announced the phased increase on June 2. A June 4 report described disputes between some Spanish Town operators and commuters over the new amount.

For a particular date, ask the operator or transport terminal whether the service is running and where passengers should meet.

Common questions

What is the new taxi fare in Jamaica?

From July 1, 2026, the published route taxi rate is J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre, while the hackney carriage rate is J$375 plus J$75 per kilometre. Hackney carriage waiting is J$39 per five minutes, and long hire is J$1,197. The exact route taxi amount depends on the approved origin, destination and rounding.

How much does a taxi cost in Jamaica?

A public route taxi generally charges a regulated amount per passenger for a stated route section. A private airport taxi or charter is priced separately, often for the whole vehicle, and the amount depends on distance, passengers, luggage, waiting, stops, tolls and the operator’s currency.

Are taxis in Jamaica expensive?

The answer depends on the service and the number of passengers. A public route taxi or JUTC bus may cost less for one passenger on a direct route, while a private vehicle can compare differently for a family or group once several public fares, route changes and luggage arrangements are added.

Which taxi is the cheapest?

There is no single cheapest taxi for every trip. Compare the exact public route fare, the number of passengers, any connections and the final trip to the address against a dated private vehicle quote.

What is the cheapest way to get around Jamaica?

For a direct route, the lowest published public price may be a JUTC bus or route taxi. Add every connection and final leg before comparing it with an intercity coach, rental car or private transfer, and keep each fare’s currency and per-person or per-vehicle basis clear.
