You can travel from Kingston to Ocho Rios by scheduled Knutsford Express coach, JUTC route 610, a rural stage carriage bus, route taxi, private transfer or hire car. Via the North-South Highway, the drive to central Ocho Rios is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, while the older road through Bog Walk and Fern Gully can take about 1 hour 45 minutes or longer. Published passenger fares include J$550 cash on JUTC route 610, J$660 for the rural stage carriage route, and a date-specific fare selected through Knutsford Express. A private transfer or hire car requires a separate quote.
Which option suits your trip?
Your starting point in Kingston, luggage, arrival time and destination in Ocho Rios will shape the practical choice. If you are arriving at Norman Manley first, see Kingston Airport to Ocho Rios transfers, coaches and travel time.

Knutsford Express gives you a scheduled office-to-office coach service. It leaves Kingston from 18 Dominica Drive in New Kingston, inside the New Kingston Shopping Center parking lot. Ocho Rios-area passenger locations include Drax Hall and RIU Hotel Ocho Rios. This is a useful fit if you want a ticketed intercity service and can reach the departure office and your final stop independently.
JUTC route 610 connects Ocho Rios and City via the toll road. In Kingston, the service uses the City terminal, so it is separate from New Kingston and Half-Way Tree. It can suit a commuter who is comfortable using public transport terminals and travelling on the published timetable.
A rural stage carriage bus is another public transport option. The Transport Authority’s approved route listings include Kingston to Ocho Rios as a rural stage carriage service. Different public passenger vehicle operators may have different departure points, payment arrangements and luggage practices.
Route taxis are useful for local connections in Kingston and Ocho Rios. The Transport Authority publishes many local routes into Ocho Rios, while a direct Kingston to Ocho Rios route taxi requires you to ask about the route, fare, terminal and any vehicle changes before boarding.
A private transfer gives you a vehicle arranged directly with a taxi, charter or contract carriage operator. You can request hotel, villa or cruise-terminal drop-off, but the written quote needs to state what is included.
A hire car gives you control over stops and local travel after you arrive. You pay the rental company and drive yourself, so the price includes more than the daily rental rate. Fuel, tolls, insurance, deposit, mileage, parking and one-way charges can all affect the total.
For connections involving Norman Manley International Airport, allow time to leave the airport, meet the driver or reach your terminal. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Kingston's Norman Manley Airport. If you arrive by air and need a hotel drop-off, a private transfer may involve fewer changes than a coach or public bus. Knutsford Express from New Kingston
Knutsford Express lists its Kingston passenger location at 18 Dominica Drive, New Kingston, in the New Kingston Shopping Center parking lot. The service is office-to-office, not hotel-to-hotel, so you arrange your own connection from the office to a hotel, villa, cruise pier or other address in Ocho Rios.
The operator lists Drax Hall and RIU Hotel Ocho Rios as Ocho Rios-area passenger locations. Ocean Village Ocho Rios appears separately in the operator’s location information, so select the exact location shown for your ticket instead of treating every Ocho Rios listing as a coach stop.
Departures are selected by travel date in the booking system. Knutsford Express describes popular-route travel times as approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending on route and traffic. That range is longer than the direct private-car estimate because a scheduled coach follows its own route, stopping pattern and operating arrangements.
The current Kingston to Ocho Rios fare is selected in the operator’s fare table or booking system after you enter the origin, destination, travel date, passenger type and currency. Treat the displayed amount as the operator’s published one-way fare for that booking. Do not replace it with an older price or a converted USD figure.
Knutsford Express states that offices accept cash, debit cards and credit cards, while its website accepts online payment. The standard luggage allowance is one piece up to 50 pounds plus one carry-on. Extra luggage may attract a fee, so include the number, size and weight of your bags when arranging the ticket.
If your final destination is a hotel or villa outside the listed passenger locations, arrange the onward connection separately. The St. Ann transport operators page can help you identify operators for the local part of the trip.
JUTC route 610
JUTC route 610 runs between Ocho Rios and City via the toll road. The published weekday departures in the December 17, 2025 announcement are:
- From Ocho Rios bus terminal: 6:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:50 p.m.
- From City terminal in Kingston: 8:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The published adult fare is J$550 cash per passenger, one way. The SmartFare adult fare is J$500 per passenger, one way. The concession card fare is listed as J$250 for seniors, children, students and disabled passengers.
Route 610 is a JUTC service, not a private transfer, rural stage carriage bus or Knutsford Express coach. You board at the stated terminal, pay under the JUTC fare arrangement and travel according to the published route. A particular hotel, villa or cruise pier may require another local connection after you arrive.
The timetable and fare announcement relate to the conversion of route 610Ex into a regular route effective December 17, 2025. Ask JUTC about current weekday, weekend and holiday operation before relying on a specific departure.
For local Kingston connections to the City terminal, see Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis. If you are travelling onward around Ocho Rios, Getting Around Ocho Rios, Jamaica: Taxis, Route Taxis and Walking covers local transport choices.
Rural stage carriage buses
The Transport Authority lists Kingston to Ocho Rios as an approved rural stage carriage route. These buses run on a route the Transport Authority approves and are separate from JUTC.

The published July 2026 fare is J$660 per passenger, one way. This amount comes from the public passenger vehicle fare increase notice. When you use this option, ask at the departure terminal or with the operating company about the boarding point, departure time, luggage arrangement and payment method.
The J$660 fare does not include a hotel drop-off arrangement, reserved seating or a stated luggage allowance. If you are carrying several bags, travelling with children or connecting to a cruise departure, ask how the operator handles your specific load and final destination before paying.
Kingston travel may involve roads in Kingston and St. Catherine before the route continues north. The Kingston operators page and St. Catherine operators page are useful starting points for arranging local connections around the public transport terminals.
Route taxis and vehicle changes
Route taxis operate on Transport Authority-approved local routes and charge according to the route and destination. They work well for shorter connections within Kingston or Ocho Rios; for the full trip, ask at the loading point whether a vehicle runs through to Ocho Rios and what the fare is.
Ask these questions before you board:
- Is the taxi going directly to Ocho Rios?
- If not, where will you change vehicles?
- What is the fare for each section?
- Is the amount per passenger and one way?
- Where will the taxi leave you in Ocho Rios?
- How much luggage can you carry?
A route taxi may be less convenient than a coach when you have large bags or several passengers, especially if the trip involves a change. It can be more practical when your Kingston starting point is away from a coach office or when you need a local connection at either end.
Private transfer or hire car
A private transfer is arranged directly with a taxi, charter or contract carriage operator. Ask for a dated written quote that names the pickup point, final address, currency, total price and unit. The quote should say whether it is for the whole vehicle or each passenger, and whether the amount is one way or return.

Include these details in your request:
- Exact Kingston pickup address.
- Exact Ocho Rios hotel, villa, cruise terminal or street address.
- Passenger count and ages.
- Number, dimensions and weight of bags.
- Vehicle type and passenger capacity.
- North-South Highway tolls.
- Fuel, parking and planned stops.
- Waiting time, including a late flight.
- Payment method, deposit and cancellation terms.
- Driver contact procedure and meeting point.
- Whether the driver will make hotel or terminal access arrangements.
For children, ask whether an infant carrier, child seat or booster seat is available, what age and size it suits, and whether it will be fitted before departure. For a passenger with mobility needs, ask about step-free access, a ramp or lift, wheelchair dimensions and weight, securement, boarding conditions and assistance with luggage.
For groups, capacity means available seats, not simply the amount of luggage space. Ask whether a van or minibus is available, whether planned stops are allowed and whether the toll is included. If you need several vehicles, ask whether the quote covers the whole group or each vehicle.
A hire car is practical when you plan several stops around Ocho Rios or want to continue through St. Ann. The rental company sets the price and terms. Ask for the total dated quote, including taxes, insurance, fuel policy, deposit, mileage, tolls, parking, delivery and any one-way charge. Visitors should also read Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules before accepting a rental vehicle.
Travel time and the two road choices
The North-South Highway is generally the faster road between Kingston and Ocho Rios. A practical current estimate from Kingston to central Ocho Rios is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. The exact time depends on where you start in Kingston, traffic and the final local road section into Ocho Rios. For the east coast instead, see Kingston to Port Antonio by bus, route taxi or drive.
Government information describes the older Kingston to Ocho Rios route as historically taking about 1 hour 45 minutes, while the completed bypass was expected to reduce the trip to approximately 45 minutes. That 1 hour 45 minute figure is a historical route estimate, not a live timetable. For a meal on the way, see Faith's Pen, the roadside food stop between Kingston and Ocho Rios.
The older road passes through Spanish Town, Bog Walk, Moneague and Fern Gully. Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes or longer, with extra time possible for traffic, road works, rain, Flat Bridge congestion, Fern Gully conditions and stops.
The latest dated North-South toll schedule from NROCC is effective August 28, 2026:
NROCC defines Class 1 as a motor vehicle under 1.7 metres high. Class 2 is over 1.7 metres high and under 5.5 metres long. Class 3 is over 1.7 metres high and over 5.5 metres long. Class 4 is a motorised two- or three-wheel vehicle.
The toll is per vehicle, not per passenger, and does not include fuel, rental, driver or parking. The separate Toll Authority North-South page lists a higher Class 1 figure of J$2,500 for Caymanas to Ocho Rios. Carry enough for the higher figure, and check your vehicle class before you reach the plaza.
Current road and service status
As of October 15, 2026, National Works Agency road-status information lists Kingston roads including Marcus Garvey Drive, South Camp Road, Church Street, Duke Street and Half-Way-Tree Road as passable. St. Ann corridors between St. Ann’s Bay and White River, Runaway Bay and St. Ann’s Bay, Moneague and Hopewell, and Hopewell and Ocho Rios are also listed as passable.

The North-South Highway operator continues to publish route information and toll rates. JUTC route 610 has published regular-route departures and fares following its December 17, 2025 conversion from the former express service.
If your plans involve Sangster International Airport, obtain a current operating and flight confirmation from MBJ Airports Limited and your airline. The airport temporarily closed during Hurricane Melissa on October 26, 2025.
For a cruise connection, ask the cruise line for the current sailing and terminal status, and see where to eat near the Ocho Rios cruise port if you have time before boarding. A CDEMA situation report dated October 30, 2025 stated that the Ocho Rios cruise pier was scheduled to reopen on October 31, 2025. Once you arrive, see Ocho Rios cruise port taxis and getting around from the pier.
Settle these details before paying
Have the following information ready before you arrange transport:

- Number of adults and children.
- Ages and sizes of children.
- Number, dimensions and weight of bags.
- Infant carrier, child seat or booster-seat needs.
- Exact hotel, villa, cruise terminal or street address.
- Total price and currency.

- Late-flight waiting time.
- Meeting point and contact procedure.
- Payment method, deposit and cancellation terms.

Families should also ask whether every passenger can board and exit without assistance. Groups should ask whether the vehicle can use the North-South Highway, whether the toll is included and whether a deposit is required. Passengers using wheelchairs or mobility scooters should give the chair’s dimensions and weight before the operator assigns a vehicle.
