Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip

A private airport transfer suits you when you want one vehicle, a known destination and a price agreed before you fly. A shared shuttle can cost less per person, while an airport taxi lets you arrange the ride after clearing Customs. Published examples from Sangster International Airport range from USD 30 one way for a private vehicle to The S Hotel to USD 300 one way for Kingston, as of October 2026. The right choice depends on your airport, destination, passenger count, luggage, arrival time and whether you want a direct ride.

Start with the service that matches your trip

Your arrival airport comes first. Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, also known as MBJ, has a common Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit for JUTA and JCAL. Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, also known as KIN, lists taxis, buses and car-rental services among its ground-transport options. If you land hungry at Sangster, see where to eat near Montego Bay Airport (Sangster International).

The JUTA and JCAL taxi desk at Sangster sits just outside Customs.

You can arrange a private vehicle before travelling, reserve a shared shuttle, use the JUTA and JCAL airport taxi desk after Customs, or receive a resort transfer included with an eligible booking. These services can have different prices, payment terms and passenger units, even when they take you to the same hotel.

A pre-booked private transfer is normally arranged for the use of the vehicle as a whole at an agreed rate. Jamaica’s Transport Authority defines Contract Carriage as a vehicle carrying passengers for hire under an express or implied contract for the vehicle as a whole and an agreed rate. The vehicle must not stand or ply for hire in public places unless specifically permitted.

A shared shuttle is not one single legal category. It may operate as an Express Carriage, carrying passengers who pay separate fares from points and to destinations specified in advance, or it may be arranged as a contracted shared service. The booking needs to state whether the charge is per person or for the vehicle, whether other passengers will be collected or dropped off, and whether the shuttle goes directly to your hotel.

An airport taxi is obtained at the airport rather than through a private booking with an individual driver. At Sangster International Airport, use the JUTA and JCAL desk outside Customs, then settle the destination and fare before leaving the airport.

The Transport Authority distinguishes route taxis and hackney carriages. A route taxi carries passengers paying separate fares along a designated route. A hackney carriage carries no more than four passengers travelling together and operates for hire or reward. The Authority states that taxi vehicles should display red PPV plates, a taxi globe, required colour markings, driver identification and fare information. You can read more about local services on the pages for transport operators in St. James and transport operators in Kingston.

Private transfer, shared shuttle or airport taxi?

A private transfer fits a family, group or traveller with a fixed hotel and luggage needs. You arrange the airport, flight, destination, passenger count and vehicle before travelling. The price may cover the entire vehicle, so a private booking can make sense for several passengers even when the headline fare is higher than a shared service.

A shared shuttle fits a solo traveller, couple or group that is comfortable paying per person and possibly sharing the vehicle. Ask how many hotel stops are included, whether the vehicle leaves at a set time, and whether late arrivals are handled. A shared service may take longer because passengers can be collected or dropped off at different properties.

An airport taxi gives you flexibility after arrival. It may suit a short hotel trip, a traveller who has not finalised plans, or someone who wants to compare the current airport quote with a pre-booked price. Ask the airport desk for the total fare to your exact hotel or address before leaving.

For wider local travel after arrival, you may need a route taxi, coach, car rental or private driver. How to Get Around Jamaica Without a Car explains how these choices can fit trips beyond the airport.

The published airport-transfer rates describe private, air-conditioned vehicles. The listed services state that infant or child seats are free and that delayed-flight waiting charges are not applied. Treat those terms as applying to the listed services, not to every provider.

TAG Jamaica publishes a separate price structure. For 1 to 3 travellers and 4 to 6 travellers, the amounts are total prices for the private vehicle. Groups of 7 or more are charged per person.

MBJ destination 1 to 3 travellers 4 to 6 travellers 7 or more
S Hotel, Deja Resort, Sea Gardens, Muthu Crystal Cove or Muthu Diamond Lagoon USD 17 one way for the vehicle USD 23 one way for the vehicle USD 4 per person one way
RIU Montego Bay, RIU Palace Montego Bay or RIU Reggae USD 20 one way for the vehicle USD 27 one way for the vehicle USD 5 per person one way

TAG Jamaica states that booking the arrival and return transfer together gives a 5% discount on the return journey. These are private-transfer prices, not airport taxi fares. Compare them with an airport taxi only after matching the same route, direction, number of passengers, luggage and currency.

A 2026 JCAL reference-rate page lists Kingston airport to Kingston hotels at USD 15 per person one way for shared coach or coaster transport, USD 45 one way for a private Hiace, Voxy or Caravan for 1 to 4 passengers, and USD 300 one way for a VIP vehicle for 1 to 3 passengers. It lists Montego Bay airport to Kingston hotels at USD 45 per person one way for shared transport, USD 350 one way for private transport for 1 to 4 passengers, and USD 600 one way for VIP transport for 1 to 3 passengers. The rates are subject to confirmation at booking.

Resort transfers included with a booking

An included resort transfer is connected to particular booking conditions. It is not automatically included with every hotel stay, package or flight.

The terms can specify:

  • Eligible airport, such as Sangster International Airport but not Norman Manley International Airport.
  • Minimum number of nights.
  • Direct booking through the resort website.
  • Shared or private service.
  • One-way or round-trip travel.
  • Booking and stay dates.
  • Deadline for submitting flight details.
  • Passenger or room-category restrictions.
  • Whether the benefit has cash value or can be transferred.

Princess Hotels publishes a shared round-trip transfer for eligible direct bookings of at least three nights at its Jamaica hotels, for arrivals at Sangster International Airport. Guests provide flight details, hotel confirmation and guest numbers up to 72 hours before arrival. Same-day requests are not accepted for that promotion, and some premium room categories receive private transport.

Moon Palace Jamaica publishes complimentary round-trip airport transfers for qualifying direct bookings of four or more nights under its stated promotion dates.

Karisma’s booking terms for an airport-transfer package state that flight details must be supplied within 48 hours of scheduled hotel check-in. The terms apply the benefit to designated airports, including Sangster International Airport, and tie the transfer to the current hotel stay. The benefit is non-transferable and has no cash value.

If your transfer comes with an all-inclusive stay, here is how to eat outside your all-inclusive near Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios resorts. Ask the resort or package seller to place the transfer details in your booking record. Include both arrival and departure flight information, then check the meeting point, sharing arrangements, hotel eligibility and flight-delay procedure.

Settle the details before you pay

A written confirmation saves confusion when a booking involves a family, several bags, a late flight or a distant hotel. For what to give the driver at the end, see tipping taxi and transfer drivers in Jamaica.

Tell the operator how many bags need to travel in the vehicle.

Your confirmation should include:

  • Exact airport, arrival or departure direction, travel date and destination.
  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the price is for the whole vehicle, each passenger, each direction or a return journey.
  • Passenger count and vehicle size.
  • Luggage allowance and the number of bags the vehicle can carry.
  • Child-seat availability, type and price.
  • Airline and flight number.
  • Airport meeting point and the driver's identification or sign.
  • Flight-delay arrangements and any waiting period or fee.
  • Stops, detours and hotel drop-offs for a shared service.
  • Payment method, deposit, cancellation conditions and refund rules.
  • Contact details for changes after booking.

Booking forms for the listed private transfers request the airline, flight number, arrival time, departure details, travel date, direction and passenger information. Some listed services state that delayed flights do not incur a waiting charge. One Sandals Whitehouse listing also states that private passengers may request food or drink stops without an extra charge. Treat that as a route-specific term.

Luggage terms differ. Give the operator the number and type of bags, including large suitcases, strollers, sports equipment or mobility equipment. Ask, “Can every passenger and every listed bag travel in the vehicle supplied for this price?”

For a shared shuttle, ask how many passengers can be carried, where you meet the vehicle, how many hotel stops are planned, and whether the vehicle goes directly to your property. The price may be per person even when a private quote for the same route is per vehicle.

For an airport taxi, ask the JUTA or JCAL desk for the total current fare to the exact hotel, villa or street address. Ask whether the amount is for the vehicle or each passenger, and whether extra bags, stops or tolls change it.

If you are using a private driver after the airport, Hiring a Private Driver in Jamaica explains the details to discuss before arranging longer trips.

Families, groups and mobility needs

Families need the correct number and type of child seats, not simply a general statement that seats are available. Ask, “Can you supply one rear-facing infant seat and one forward-facing child seat for these ages and weights, and are they included in the quoted price?”

The listed private-transfer pages state that infant or child seats are free on the listed services. A Dreams Rose Hall page says child safety seats are available on request. These are service-specific terms.

Groups need two capacity figures, passenger capacity and luggage capacity. TAG Jamaica separates prices for 1 to 3 travellers, 4 to 6 travellers and groups of 7 or more. Other listed pages commonly show a private vehicle price for 1 to 4 passengers and direct groups of 10 or more to request a group rate.

Ask, “Will everyone and all luggage fit in one vehicle, or will you supply a larger vehicle?” Also ask whether the quoted price covers the whole group or adds a charge for each extra passenger.

For mobility needs, use direct questions:

  • What is the step height and door opening?
  • Can the vehicle carry a folding wheelchair or mobility scooter?
  • Can the passenger remain seated in the wheelchair during travel?
  • Is a ramp or lift available?
  • Can someone assist from the airport meeting point to the vehicle?
  • Is there enough luggage space for mobility equipment?
  • Where can the vehicle stop at the destination?

Arrange an accessible vehicle directly with the provider and request the answer in writing. For airport and road details around Kingston, the St. Andrew transport-operator directory may help you locate services for the wider metropolitan area.

Which airport route are you making?

Your destination affects the service that makes sense. A direct private vehicle can suit a hotel in Montego Bay, Rose Hall, Negril, Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay, Kingston or the south coast. A shared service may work when your hotel is part of a regular resort route and you have flexibility at arrival. If you land in Kingston, here is where to eat near Norman Manley International Airport.

Your destination affects whether a private or shared service makes sense.

For airport travel to the west, see Montego Bay Airport to Your Hotel for hotel-area choices around the Hip Strip, Rose Hall and Ironshore. If you are travelling to Negril, the Westmoreland transport-operator directory covers services in the parish where that route ends.

For travel between Kingston and Montego Bay, compare the airport, coach, flight, private vehicle and hire-car choices in Montego Bay to Kingston. If you plan to drive yourself, Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor covers licences, roads and rules.

The prices above are operator reference prices in USD as of 15 October 2026. Your provider may quote a different amount for the date, vehicle, passenger count and destination you submit.

Common questions

Are airport transfers cheaper than taxis?

There is no single answer because private transfers and airport taxis may use different pricing units. A private vehicle can cost less per person for a group, while a shared shuttle can cost less for one traveller or a couple. At Sangster International Airport, ask the JUTA or JCAL desk for the current total fare, then compare it with a private quote for the same route, passengers, luggage and direction.

Is it cheaper to book airport transfers in advance?

Advance booking is not automatically cheaper, but it can give you a written price and clear terms before arrival. TAG Jamaica states that booking the arrival and return transfer together gives a 5% discount on the return journey. Resort promotions can also include a shared transfer when you meet conditions such as a minimum stay, direct booking and an advance deadline for flight details.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Jamaica?

At Sangster International Airport, use the JUTA or JCAL Authorised Airport Taxi desk outside Customs, or arrange a private transfer, shared shuttle or eligible resort transfer before travelling. At Norman Manley International Airport, taxis, buses and car-rental services are listed as ground-transport options. Give the provider your exact hotel or address, flight details, passenger count, luggage and child-seat requirements.

Is a shared shuttle worth it in Jamaica?

A shared shuttle can suit you when the per-person price is lower than a private vehicle and you accept other passengers, waiting and hotel stops. It may be less suitable when you need a direct drop-off, have substantial luggage, arrive late, require an accessible vehicle or have a tight onward connection. Ask for the full per-person price, meeting point, stops, luggage allowance and late-flight procedure.

For operators serving your arrival point or destination, use the relevant parish directory, such as transport operators in St. James, transport operators in Westmoreland, transport operators in Kingston or transport operators in St. Andrew.
