Portmore to Kingston, Jamaica: Commuting by JUTC Bus, Route Taxi and Toll Road

A multi-lane causeway road crossing a wide calm bay at dawn

Portmore to Kingston takes about an hour in lighter traffic and longer during the weekday commute. You can travel by JUTC bus for a published fare of JMD $50 with SmartFare or JMD $100 cash on regular routes, use a premium bus listed at JMD $200 per passenger, take a route taxi, or drive through the Portmore toll plaza for JMD $400 to $1,195 per vehicle one way, depending on vehicle class and payment method.

Your best choice depends on where you start in Portmore, where you need to stop in Kingston, how many people are travelling, and whether you need an early or late service. The direct bus connections cover City, Downtown, Half Way Tree and New Kingston, while route taxis and private vehicles give you more flexibility with stops.

Choose the service that matches your destination

For a daily commute from Greater Portmore, JUTC is usually the clearest starting point because the route number, destination and scheduled departure are published. Route taxis can work well when you need a connection through Portmore Mall or another hub. Driving gives you control over your departure time, but you pay either the Portmore toll or the fuel and time costs of the toll-free Mandela Highway route.

Buses and cars share the roads into Kingston during the weekday peaks.

If you are starting in Greater Portmore, Portmore Mall, Southboro, Dawkins Drive or Portmore Pines, settle your exact boarding point before leaving home. Portmore is in St. Catherine, while your destination may be in Kingston or St. Andrew, and the Transport Authority lists the available routes by parish. A bus that reaches City may not be the right choice for a specific office in New Kingston, and a bus marked Half Way Tree may not continue to your final street.

The Portmore to Kingston transport listing can help you identify the relevant transport centre or stand. For wider city connections, see Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis.

JUTC routes from Portmore to Kingston

JUTC route listings identify these direct Greater Portmore connections:

  • Premium routes 315, 316 and 320 serve Greater Portmore or Portmore Pines through the Portmore Toll Road, Half Way Tree, New Kingston, Marcus Garvey Drive or City.

The JUTC schedule published for April 5 to June 30, 2026 listed route 20 from Greater Portmore to City with weekday departures beginning at 4:35 a.m. and continuing through the day. Route 20A had weekday, Saturday and public-holiday schedules, with the public-holiday service beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Those times are scheduled departures, not arrival promises. Since those timetable PDFs ended on June 30, 2026, contact JUTC for the current departure, return trip and fare for your route.

Regular JUTC fares and payment

JUTC’s regular-route fare examples from 2025 notices list:

  • JMD $50 per passenger, one way, with a SmartFare card.
  • JMD $100 per passenger, one way, when paying cash.
  • JMD $25 per passenger for seniors on the published concession.
  • JMD $20 per passenger for children, students and persons with disabilities on the published concession.

The concession depends on the passenger category and the applicable JUTC rules. Carry the identification or school uniform needed for the category you are using.

A SmartFare or Smartercard is rechargeable and supports cashless payment. Ask the depot or customer service centre if your exact bus accepts cash, SmartFare, or both before you board. The fare is per passenger, not per vehicle, and a separate fare applies to each traveller unless a published concession applies.

For the timetable, route information and service updates, use the JUTC route and timetable information.

Premium and express-style Portmore services

Premium services can suit you when your destination matches the listed corridor and you want a service that uses the Portmore Toll Road or reaches a central Kingston stop.

Route 320 runs from Cross Roads to Greater Portmore through New Kingston and Half Way Tree. The published schedule listed a 4:20 p.m. departure. A June 2026 Jamaica Gleaner report described the service as erratic, so contact JUTC before relying on it for a fixed work or school finish.

Route 308 runs from Portmore Pines to Papine through Garveymeade, Half Way Tree and Portmore Toll. The published schedule listed a 6:45 a.m. departure and a JMD $200 per-passenger, one-way fare.

Route taxis between Portmore and Kingston

A route taxi travels along a fixed, licensed corridor and normally carries several passengers going along the same route. That is different from a chartered taxi, which you hire for one passenger or group and one agreed trip.

The Transport Authority lists Greater Portmore to Portmore Mall as a route-taxi connection. It also lists Greater Portmore to Spanish Town. For a trip onward to Downtown Kingston, Half Way Tree or New Kingston, you may need to change at Portmore Mall, Spanish Town or another hub.

Cabinet approved a 16% increase for public passenger vehicles in two phases: 8% from June 2, 2026 and a further 8% from July 1, 2026. From July 1, 2026, the regulated route-taxi rate is JMD $132 base fare plus JMD $8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, one way, and route-specific fares are rounded. A June 2026 Jamaica Observer report described Greater Portmore route-taxi fares after the increase as approximately JMD $200 per passenger. Ask the driver for the fare to your destination before boarding. The Jamaica taxi fares in 2026 guide has the full rates.

Before boarding, give the stand attendant or driver your exact destination. Ask whether the vehicle goes directly there or whether you need a transfer, and ask for the total fare per passenger. Route-taxi fares are not the same as chartered taxi or private-transfer prices.

For more detail on boarding, route signs and transfers, read Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them.

Driving through Portmore

The Portmore Causeway is the tolled T2 road linking Portmore and Kingston. The Portmore toll plaza rates effective August 3, 2026 are:

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Vehicle class Manual-lane fare T-Tag fare
Class 1 JMD $400 JMD $370
Class 2 JMD $790 JMD $690
Class 3 JMD $1,195 JMD $1,150

These charges are per vehicle, one way, for one passage through the Portmore plaza. Class 1 vehicles are under 1.70 metres high. Class 2 vehicles are at least 1.70 metres high and under 5.50 metres long. Class 3 vehicles are at least 1.70 metres high and at least 5.50 metres long.

Manual lanes accept cash. A T-Tag provides the lower listed rate, automatic deduction and access to the frequent-user programme. Class 1 and Class 2 T-Tag users receive a free tenth passage within the weekly programme period, with later passages discounted by 10%.

The toll-free alternative is generally the Mandela Highway and connected public roads. The Causeway adds a direct road charge, while Mandela Highway avoids the toll but may place you in heavier traffic depending on the time, destination and road conditions.

If you are driving a rental car, ask the rental company how toll payment works before leaving the pickup location. For current rate details, see Jamaica Highway Tolls: Highway 2000 and North-South Highway Rates. For licence and road information, read Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules.

Traffic, early buses and late returns

Portmore-to-Kingston traffic is heaviest during the weekday morning commute into Kingston and the afternoon or evening return toward Portmore. Reports from the Jamaican government and local news have described long morning queues leaving Portmore and heavy afternoon delays along Mandela Highway and the Kingston approaches.

Afternoon queues build on the roads leading out of Kingston toward Portmore.

Early JUTC departures can suit office workers and students. Route 20 from Greater Portmore to City was scheduled to begin at 4:35 a.m. on weekdays. Route 20Ax to New Kingston was scheduled to begin at 5:25 a.m. on weekdays. Route 20A to Half Way Tree was scheduled to begin at 5:30 a.m. on public holidays. Premium route 315 listed Greater Portmore departures at 5:30, 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.

Late services vary by route. The April to June 2026 route 20C schedule showed weekday departures from Greater Portmore through 8:05 p.m. Route 16, serving Greater Portmore to Cross Roads, showed departures as late as approximately 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., depending on the listed trip.

JUTC operates daily for up to 14 hours from its depots, but each Portmore route has its own timetable. For a late work or school finish, contact JUTC about the final departure for the exact route. Route taxis may run later than scheduled buses, but the taxi stand can tell you the available destination and fare at that time.

If you are waiting out the evening peak in town, here are restaurants open late in Kingston. Leave extra time for both directions during the morning and afternoon peaks. A timetable gives a departure point and time, while traffic affects when you reach City, Downtown, Half Way Tree, New Kingston or Cross Roads.

What to arrange before you leave Portmore

Write down your full trip before paying or boarding:

  • Your starting point, such as Greater Portmore, Portmore Mall, Southboro, Dawkins Drive or Portmore Pines.
  • Your exact Kingston destination, such as City, Downtown, Half Way Tree, New Kingston, Cross Roads or a named street.
  • The route number and service type, regular, express or premium.
  • The first departure and the final departure for your return.
  • The fare in JMD and whether it is per passenger or per vehicle.
  • Cash, SmartFare or T-Tag payment.
  • The boarding point and drop-off point.
  • Any transfer through Portmore Mall, Spanish Town or another hub.
  • Whether luggage, bicycles or bulky school equipment can be carried.

Families and groups should ask whether everyone can board the same bus or taxi, how many seats are available, whether each person pays separately, and whether a chartered vehicle would suit the group better. Ask whether children receive the applicable concession and whether luggage or school equipment can be carried.

If you need a private vehicle, arrange the trip directly with the taxi desk, transport centre or private operator. Give the exact pickup point, destination street, passenger count, luggage count and requested departure time. Ask for the total fare, whether it is per vehicle, and whether the vehicle has enough seats.

For a child, ask whether a suitable child seat is available and what restraint the child must use. For a wheelchair user, ask about step-free boarding, lift access, wheelchair dimensions and weight limits, whether the wheelchair can remain assembled, priority seating, and the exact boarding point. Ask whether a transfer is required.

One practical rule applies to every option: confirm the fare, destination and final return service before you travel.

Airports, ports and severe-weather status

Portmore residents and visitors may use this connection to reach Kingston appointments, workplaces, schools, shopping areas or Norman Manley International Airport. If you are arranging a private airport pickup, provide the airport terminal, flight number, arrival date, passenger count and luggage details to the airport desk or private operator. The Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip explains the difference between a prearranged transfer and a taxi. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Kingston’s Norman Manley Airport.

Hurricane Melissa caused temporary interruptions in October 2025. Norman Manley International Airport closed after the final incoming flight on October 25, 2025, reopened for relief flights on October 29, and was scheduled to resume commercial operations on October 30. Sangster International Airport closed on October 26, resumed relief flights on October 30 and commercial flights on November 1. Kingston Harbour reopened on October 29.

JUTC suspended road operations around noon on October 26, 2025. The National Works Agency reported road clearances in stages, and its December 15, 2025 status summary listed the affected Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine roads as open to two-way traffic at the time of reporting. A November 2025 government update said transport sectors had returned to normal operations.
