You can get around Jamaica without a car by combining route taxis, rural buses, JUTC buses, Knutsford Express coaches, charter taxis, hotel shuttles and domestic flights. A short local ride may cost from J$20 to J$100 on a JUTC route, while a route taxi uses a distance-based fare, and a full island circuit takes about 14 to 16 hours of driving with minimal stops. The right choice depends on your route, luggage, arrival time, number of passengers and need for direct door-to-door travel.
Choose transport by the type of trip
Jamaica’s transport network works best when you match the service to each leg. Public transport keeps costs down, scheduled coaches make longer trips easier to plan, and private vehicles help when your accommodation is away from a terminal or you are travelling with children and luggage.

Route taxis for short and medium local trips
Route taxis carry separate-fare passengers along designated routes between towns, markets, residential areas and transport hubs. You normally pay per passenger for a one-way trip, rather than hiring the whole vehicle.
From July 1, 2026, the regulated route-taxi rate is J$132 base fare plus J$8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, one way. Route-specific fares are rounded, so ask the driver what your route costs before you get in. Children, students in uniform, physically disabled passengers and senior citizens pay half the quoted fare.
These rates apply to a route taxi. They do not cover private vehicle hire, waiting time or luggage charges. For a plain explanation of boarding, route markings and passenger arrangements, see Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them.
Route taxis should display the required red PPV plate, route information, taxi markings, Transport Authority driver identification and a black-and-white checked pattern. The Jamaica Tourist Board says fares and licences are regulated by the Transport Authority. The Authority advises passengers to report a vehicle carrying passengers for payment without the required red plate or road licence.
Rural stage carriages and coaster buses for low-cost inter-town trips
Rural stage carriages and privately operated coaster buses connect towns from transport centres, bus parks and other local departure points. They can be useful for low-cost travel between communities, but departure times may be less predictable than a booked coach or a JUTC service.
From July 1, 2026, the regulated rural stage carriage (rural bus) rate is J$53 base fare plus J$7.02 per kilometre, per passenger, one way. For example, the Ministry lists Ocho Rios to Kingston at J$660 per passenger, one way, and Mandeville to May Pen at J$330, both from July 1, 2026. For any other route, ask the conductor for the fare before boarding.
Half fares are listed for children under 12, students in uniform, physically disabled passengers and senior citizens. Plan a rural bus trip as separate legs. Identify the origin terminal or office, destination terminal or office, departure window, connection time and final local transfer.
The Jamaica taxi fares in 2026 guide covers the rates now in force and how to compare a public fare with a private vehicle quote.
JUTC buses around Kingston and nearby areas
JUTC buses are government-operated services concentrated in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine and surrounding areas. JUTC also operates selected express and rural routes.
Its route guide currently displays regular-route fares from J$20 to J$100 per passenger, one way, depending on the route. Use the route number, stop and fare information for the specific service rather than applying the regular range to every trip.
A December 17, 2025 JUTC notice lists route 610 between Ocho Rios and City at J$550 cash for an adult, J$500 for an adult using a SmartFare card and J$250 for concession passengers. The listed departures from Ocho Rios are 6:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. Departures from City are listed at 8:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. These fares and times are per passenger and one way, as of December 2025.
For central Kingston trips, the Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis guide can help you match the route to your boarding point.
Knutsford Express for planned inter-city travel
Knutsford Express is a booked, scheduled coach service linking major towns, airports and tourism centres. It suits planned travel with luggage because you select an origin, destination, travel date and passenger category when booking.
Knutsford’s published fares are route-specific and one way. Take the amount shown in the operator’s fare table for your travel date. The company says payments can be made online or at an office by cash, debit card or credit card.
Its general luggage allowance is one piece not exceeding 50 pounds plus one carry-on. Additional luggage attracts a fee. Popular routes generally take an estimated two to four hours, depending on the route and traffic.
Knutsford Connect lists New Kingston to Norman Manley International Airport from US$10.00 or J$1,300 per passenger, one way, with scheduled departures. These are two published currency options, not a conversion.
For route planning, see Knutsford Express in Jamaica: Routes, Schedules, Fares and Booking. Leave a buffer when connecting between separately booked buses because connection times are approximate.
Charter taxis and private drivers for direct travel
A charter taxi or private driver is hired for your own route, airport transfer, day trip or several stops. The quote normally depends on the vehicle, passenger count, route, waiting time and requested stops.
Keep this service separate from a route taxi fare. A charter quote may be per vehicle, while a public bus or route taxi fare is normally per passenger. Ask for the currency, whether the price is one way, return or hourly, and whether tolls, luggage, waiting, night travel and additional stops are included.
Private travel is useful when your hotel, villa or worksite is away from a transport centre. It also helps when several people are travelling together, when you have large luggage or when you need to leave at a specific time. For questions to put to a private driver, see Hiring a Private Driver in Jamaica: What It Costs and What to Ask.
Domestic flights between selected airports
AirLink Express and TimAir are listed by the Jamaica Tourist Board and airport operators as domestic aviation providers serving Jamaica’s aerodromes. Domestic flights and charters connect locations including Montego Bay, Kingston, Negril, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio.
A flight may suit a western-to-eastern trip when road travel would take much of the day. Obtain a dated quote directly from the airline or charter operator in the currency offered. The fare is arranged for the specific service, passenger count, luggage and travel date.
Hotel shuttles for airport and nearby transfers
Some hotels arrange transport between the airport and property or between the property and nearby attractions. The service may be complimentary, shared or paid, and advance booking may be required.
Ask whether the shuttle runs at your arrival time, where it meets passengers, how much luggage is accepted and whether the vehicle goes directly to your accommodation. If you arrive at Sangster International Airport, the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall contains hotel shuttle services, taxi desks, transfer operators, rental agencies and intra-island airline services.
Plan the route through transport centres
A cross-island trip is easier when you split it into legs instead of treating it as one continuous booking. For each leg, write down the origin terminal or office, destination terminal or office, departure window, connection time and final local transfer.

Montego Bay and Sangster International Airport
Sangster International Airport’s Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall is the starting point for airport taxi desks, hotel lounges, transfer operators, rental agencies and intra-island airline services. The airport identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two taxi companies operating at the airport, with their desk outside Customs. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Montego Bay Airport (Sangster International).
Knutsford Express lists locations at Montego Bay Harbour Circle, its corporate office area and the airport. Montego Bay works as a western connection point for Negril, Lucea, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Kingston and the south coast.
If you are comparing a private transfer with an airport taxi, Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip explains the difference between a vehicle arranged for your party and a taxi service arranged at the airport.
Ocho Rios and Drax Hall
Knutsford Express lists its Ocho Rios office at Ocean Village Shopping Center and its Drax Hall location at Lot 12 Drax Hall Estates. A ticket may use one branch rather than the other, so read the boarding location on the booking and allow time to reach it.
Route taxis and rural stage services use local transport points. For the final leg, you may need a local taxi or a walk from the bus office to your accommodation. The Getting Around Ocho Rios, Jamaica: Taxis, Route Taxis and Walking guide covers the local connection, and where to eat in Ocho Rios on a budget helps if you have time between connections.
Mandeville as a south-central connection
Knutsford Express lists Shop 1, Pear Tree Plaza, Caledonia Road, as its Mandeville location. Route taxis and rural buses fan out from Mandeville to the surrounding communities, which makes the town a useful south-central transfer point.
If your final destination is outside the coach route, allow time and money for a rural bus, route taxi or private vehicle from Mandeville. Treat that final leg as a separate booking or fare.
Kingston and Half Way Tree
Half Way Tree Transport Centre is a major JUTC interchange. JUTC’s route guide provides route numbers, stops, fares and timetable links for services in the Kingston area.
Knutsford Express lists New Kingston at 18 Dominica Drive. Knutsford Connect operates scheduled service from New Kingston to Norman Manley International Airport, with the published fare of US$10.00 or J$1,300 per passenger, one way.
For a meal near the interchange, see where to eat in Half Way Tree, Kingston. For an airport connection, allow time for traffic between your starting point and Half Way Tree or New Kingston. If you are connecting from a separate bus or taxi, leave a buffer for boarding, luggage and the final walk or local taxi.
Settle the details before paying
For an airport transfer, charter taxi, private driver or hotel shuttle, give the operator your flight number, arrival or departure date, passenger count and luggage details. Include every child in the passenger count.

Give the exact hotel or villa name, street address, parish and any entrance that is difficult to identify. Ask for the total price and currency, whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger, and whether it is one way, return or hourly.
Also settle:
At Sangster International Airport, use the airport’s Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall and its taxi desks. For route taxis, look for the required plate, markings and driver identification described by the Transport Authority and Jamaica Tourist Board.
Airport waiting arrangements vary by service. Provide your flight number and ask for the included waiting period and any delay charge before paying.
Families, groups and passengers with mobility needs
Count every passenger and luggage item when discussing vehicle capacity. Ask whether a suitable child seat or infant carrier is available, whether it is included in the price or charged separately, and whether it is rear-facing, forward-facing or a booster.

Ask whether you need a private vehicle instead of a shared shuttle or public bus, and whether the driver will make comfort or feeding stops. For a group, ask whether the quoted price covers the whole vehicle or each passenger, whether luggage travels inside the passenger compartment, whether several vehicles are needed and whether the group can remain together during transfers.
If you use a wheelchair or other mobility equipment, ask:
- Is the vehicle wheelchair accessible?
- Must the passenger transfer into a seat?
- Can the wheelchair be folded and stored?
- What are the door width, ramp or lift availability and vehicle floor height?
- Can the vehicle carry a powered wheelchair?
- Are the boarding and drop-off points accessible?
- Does airport assistance also need to be arranged with the airline or airport?
JUTC’s route guide includes special routes for persons with disabilities. Sangster International Airport says wheelchair assistance is available at airline counters and directs passengers to contact the individual airline. Knutsford Express publishes the one-piece, 50-pound luggage allowance plus one carry-on, with an additional fee for extra luggage. Ask about equipment for the specific vehicle you will use.
Common questions
How do tourists get around in Jamaica?
Tourists use route taxis, rural buses, JUTC buses, Knutsford Express coaches, charter taxis, private drivers, hotel shuttles and domestic flights. Local buses and route taxis suit short trips, while scheduled coaches and private vehicles make longer airport and hotel connections easier to arrange.
What is the cheapest way to get around Jamaica?
For many short trips, JUTC buses, route taxis and rural buses have the lowest published passenger fares. JUTC regular-route fares currently range from J$20 to J$100 per passenger, one way, depending on the route, while route taxis charge J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026.
What is the main transportation in Jamaica?
Road transport is the main way people move around Jamaica. Buses, route taxis, charter taxis, private drivers and scheduled inter-city coaches serve more places than domestic aviation, which connects selected airports and aerodromes.
Can you get around Jamaica by bus?
Yes. JUTC serves Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine and nearby areas, while rural stage carriages and coaster buses connect many towns. Knutsford Express provides booked coach service between major towns and airports, but you may still need a route taxi or private taxi between the coach office and your accommodation.
How long does it take to drive around all of Jamaica?
A full circuit is estimated at about 14 to 16 hours of driving with minimal stops, based on an approximately 398-mile route from a Jamaica road-trip publisher. For an actual trip, divide the circuit across several days and allow for traffic, weather, road conditions, meals, connections, luggage and overnight stays.
For the area you are travelling to, see the transport operators listed for Kingston, St. Catherine, St. James or St. Ann.
