Kingston to Mandeville, Jamaica: Coach, Bus and Route Taxi Options

A long straight road crossing open farmland toward distant hills in central Jamaica

You can travel from Kingston to Mandeville by scheduled coach, JUTC bus, rural stage bus, staged route taxi connections or a hired car. The road distance is about 98 km, with an estimated driving time of approximately 1.5 hours. Published public fares include JMD 500 with SmartFare or JMD 600 cash for an adult on JUTC Route 512, and JMD 2,000 per passenger for the introductory JUTC Rural Express 512Ex fare, both one way. Knutsford Express also runs between the two towns, with the current fare and departure time selected during booking.

Which Kingston to Mandeville service fits your trip?

Your choice depends on the departure time, the number of people travelling, how much luggage you have and where you need to go after reaching Mandeville. A scheduled coach or JUTC service gives you a set departure and a per-passenger fare. A hired car gives you more control over stops and final addresses, but the price is normally per vehicle and can include separate charges.

The main options are:

  • Knutsford Express, a scheduled intercity coach.
  • JUTC Route 512 and Rural Express 512Ex.
  • Privately operated rural stage buses and coaster buses.
  • Route taxis, usually arranged as staged connections rather than one direct ride.
  • A hire car arranged with a car-rental company.

For a scheduled coach or public bus, you will need the exact terminal, departure time, passenger category, luggage arrangement and payment method. For a hire car, ask for a dated quote that separates the vehicle price from fuel, insurance, deposit, tolls and any driver or waiting-time charge.

The route starts in Kingston, passes through St. Catherine and Clarendon, and ends in Manchester. You can compare local operators in Kingston, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Manchester.

Knutsford Express between Kingston and Mandeville

Knutsford Express Services Limited operates a scheduled intercity coach between Kingston and Mandeville. The Kingston departure point is 18 Dominica Drive, New Kingston, in the New Kingston Shopping Center parking lot. The Mandeville arrival point is Shop 1, Pear Tree Plaza, Caledonia Road.

A long-distance coach waiting at a city terminal
A scheduled coach leaves from a set terminal, so keep the address from your booking.

The operator lists passenger-service hours of 4:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily in Kingston. In Mandeville, the listed hours are 5:15 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 6:15 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. These are branch opening hours, so select your travel date and route to see the departure available for your trip.

Knutsford Express accepts bookings through its website, mobile booking system, WhatsApp and telephone at +1-876-971-1822. The booking system lets you choose a single or return trip and passenger categories such as adults, children, seniors and students.

The fare is selected during booking and can change by date or service. Before paying, check the total in JMD, the number of passengers, the direction, the luggage terms and the arrival point in Mandeville. If you need to continue to a home, school, hospital or workplace, arrange that final leg separately.

The coach is a practical choice when you want a named departure and a direct intercity service. It may suit a visitor staying in Kingston, a student travelling for classes or a worker making the trip regularly. Keep the terminal address with your booking because New Kingston and Mandeville each have several transport points.

For more operator information, see Knutsford Express in Jamaica: Routes, Schedules, Fares and Booking.

JUTC Route 512 and Rural Express 512Ex

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company, or JUTC, is government-owned and operates bus services between Kingston and Mandeville through the toll-road corridor.

JUTC Route 512 regular service was launched with three daily departures in each direction. The July 2025 launch information listed Mandeville departures at 5:45 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. It listed Kingston departures at 7:55 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 5:20 p.m.

The published Route 512 adult fare was:

  • JMD 500 with SmartFare, per passenger, one way.
  • JMD 600 cash, per passenger, one way.

The published concession fare was JMD 250 with SmartFare and JMD 600 cash, per concession passenger, one way. Concession categories include students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. SmartFare cards can be obtained or topped up at Half-Way Tree, Downtown, Greater Portmore and Spanish Town. The Kingston hubs include the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre and the Downtown Transport Hub. For a daily Portmore commute, see the Portmore to Kingston JUTC, route taxi and toll road options.

JUTC also launched Rural Express 512Ex for long-haul routes. The introductory fare published in October 2025 was JMD 2,000 per passenger, one way. The 512Ex timetable marked as starting October 1, 2025 lists Monday to Saturday departures from Mandeville at 6:15 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. It lists Half-Way Tree departures at 8:05 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., with an evening return shown at 5:15 p.m.

Route 512 regular service and 512Ex are separate service classes, so keep their fares and departure times separate when planning a return trip. If you are travelling for work or school, compare the departure time with the time you need to arrive, then check the return departure before paying for the outbound trip.

JUTC publishes wheelchair-equipped vehicles in its fleet, including diesel coaches with wheelchair lifts and low-entry buses with designated spaces. Ask JUTC whether the specific Kingston to Mandeville departure has the vehicle and boarding arrangement you need. If you use a wheelchair, ask about the maximum chair dimensions and weight, whether the chair can remain assembled during boarding and whether you need to transfer to a seat.

For route numbers, fares and other services, see JUTC Buses in Jamaica: Routes, Fares and the Montego Bay Service.

Rural stage buses and coaster buses

Privately operated rural stage buses and coaster buses are licensed by Jamaica’s Transport Authority. These services generally use designated bus parks and terminals, and connections are commonly made through May Pen.

Rural stage buses and coaster buses use designated bus parks and terminals.

A staged bus trip may cost less than a private vehicle, but you need to allow time for the connection and arrange each leg at the correct terminal. At the Kingston terminal, ask for the next Mandeville service, the fare, the destination point, the luggage arrangement and whether you need to change in May Pen. If a connection is required, ask for the fare for each leg before boarding.

Private bus fares can vary by route and service. Keep the amount for the Kingston to May Pen leg separate from the May Pen to Mandeville leg, because the total is the sum of the individual passenger fares. Ask where you will arrive in Mandeville and how you can continue to your final address.

This option can suit repeat travellers who already know the bus parks and connection points. It can also suit passengers who prefer to pay per person instead of arranging a vehicle for the whole trip. Departure frequency varies by route and demand, so allow extra time when you have an appointment, examination or scheduled work start.

Route taxis and staged connections

Route taxis are licensed public passenger vehicles that carry separate-fare passengers along designated routes. The Transport Authority defines route taxis as operating on designated routes of no more than 30 kilometres, so you should not assume that a single route taxi will run directly from Kingston to Mandeville.

A staged route-taxi trip may involve one or more changes through areas such as May Pen. At each terminal, ask the driver or dispatcher for the destination, passenger fare, loading point and next connection. Pay attention to the final arrival point, since the Mandeville leg may end at a transport centre rather than at your exact address.

Price each route section separately and include every connection in your total. If you have luggage, ask where it will be stored and whether an additional charge applies.

For a wider explanation of separate-fare routes, see Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them. For current public transport fare information, see Jamaica Taxi Fares 2026: Route Taxi and Bus Fares Explained.

Hire car and private vehicle travel

You can arrange a hire car directly with a car-rental company. The company sets the vehicle price, deposit, insurance terms, mileage policy and payment requirements. Ask for the total cost for your rental dates, including the vehicle, fuel policy, insurance, deposit, mileage limits, tolls and any one-way charge.

Luggage loaded into the boot of a hire car
A hire car is priced per vehicle and can carry a family with several bags.

A hired car can suit a family with several bags, a group travelling together or a visitor who needs to continue beyond Mandeville. The price is normally per vehicle and rental period, not per passenger. If a driver is included, ask whether driver time, parking, tolls, fuel and extra stops are part of the quote.

For self-drive or hired-vehicle travel, the Highway 2000 East-West corridor from Kingston to Williamsfield is 71.9 km. The May Pen to Williamsfield section is operated by TransJamaican Highway Limited. The A2 and Williamsfield road route can take longer and vary more than the toll-road route, so allow extra time if you choose the non-toll road. For a food stop on the way, see where to eat in Jamaica on a road trip.

The following May Pen to Williamsfield toll rates were published by TransJamaican Highway Limited and were effective from December 27, 2025. They are per vehicle, per passage.

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Vehicle class Mainline without T-Tag Mainline with T-Tag Ramp without T-Tag Ramp with T-Tag
Class 1 JMD 480 JMD 470 JMD 240 JMD 235
Class 2 JMD 720 JMD 700 JMD 360 JMD 350
Class 3 JMD 1,400 JMD 1,400 JMD 700 JMD 700

These tolls cover the toll passage only. Fuel, rental charges, insurance and driver fees are separate. The current Kingston to Mandeville total depends on the toll sections and vehicle class, so use the TransJamaican Highway toll calculator or ask TransJamaican Highway for the amount before driving.

For licence, road and rental requirements, see Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules and Renting a Car in Jamaica: Requirements, Costs and Airport Pickup. You can also compare the toll-road details in Jamaica Highway Tolls: Highway 2000 and North-South Highway Rates.

Distance, timing and the May Pen connection

Visit Jamaica gives the road distance between Kingston and Mandeville as about 98 km and an estimated driving time of approximately 1.5 hours. That estimate is not a timetable. It does not include city traffic, stops, weather delays or loading time. If your trip ends on the south coast, see the Kingston to Treasure Beach routes.

A coach or express bus may use a similar road corridor, but your total travel time also includes the time needed to reach the departure point and leave the arrival terminal. Rural buses and staged route taxis can take longer because of connections, waiting and passenger loading.

If you have a medical appointment, examination or work start time, choose a departure that gives you time after arrival. For a late return, check the last scheduled coach or JUTC service before you travel, then keep the terminal’s contact details available. If you arrive hungry, here is where to eat in Mandeville.

Road status after Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, 2025. For the Kingston to Mandeville road corridor, the National Works Agency’s December 15, 2025 status summary recorded affected roads in Kingston, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Manchester as open on two lanes.

Affected roads on the corridor were recorded as open on two lanes in December 2025.

The same summary recorded 400 of 403 affected roads island-wide as open on two lanes, with three roads still blocked in other parishes. The National Works Agency reported on October 31, 2025 that major corridors were being reopened after landslides, fallen trees, flooding and scoured road surfaces. The Jamaica Information Service reported on November 6 that key transportation corridors had been restored, including routes connecting Kingston and Mandeville with western Jamaica.

TransJamaican Highway Limited announced full operations and toll collection on the May Pen to Williamsfield section from December 27, 2025. Check the current road and toll information before setting out, especially after heavy weather.

If you are arriving through Norman Manley International Airport, arrange transport from the airport into Kingston before taking an intercity service. Airport access and flight status should be confirmed with Norman Manley International Airport or your airline when those details form part of your plan.

What to settle before paying

Write down the details for every passenger and every leg before you pay. This helps you compare a per-person public fare with a per-vehicle quote.

Settle:

  • Passenger count and passenger categories.
  • Travel date and direction.
  • Exact departure and arrival terminals.
  • Luggage quantity, size and any excess-luggage charge.
  • Child age and whether a child seat is required.
  • Exact final address in Kingston or Mandeville.
  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the price is per person or per vehicle.
  • Whether the fare is one way or return.
  • Waiting time and any charge for a delayed flight or appointment.
  • Meeting point and identification procedure.
  • Payment method, receipt and cancellation or change terms.
  • Whether tolls, fuel, parking, insurance or driver waiting time are included.

Families should ask for the vehicle type and total seats, whether children share adult seating, whether a child seat or booster can be supplied, whether a stroller can be carried and where it will be stored, and whether children’s equipment counts as luggage. Ask whether seats can be reserved together.

Groups should ask whether everyone can travel on the same departure, whether a larger coach, minibus or private charter is available, whether the quote is per vehicle or per person, and whether luggage, tolls, parking, driver time and extra stops are included. Ask whether a deposit is required and what happens if the group size changes.

Travellers with mobility needs should ask whether the specific vehicle has a wheelchair lift or ramp, whether the wheelchair can remain assembled during boarding, the maximum wheelchair dimensions and weight, whether an accessible stop is available, whether assistance is available at both terminals and whether a transfer from the wheelchair to a seat is required.
