Renting a car in Jamaica can suit you if you qualify under Jamaican driving rules, meet the rental company's age and payment conditions, and want to travel independently. Published airport figures, as of October 2026, range from US$44 per rental day for a Hertz Toyota Yaris at Kingston Airport to US$90 as Hertz's displayed average daily price, before you account for protection, deposits, fuel, equipment and return charges. You can collect at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, or a town branch, then compare the complete cost with taxis, transfers, coaches or a private driver.
Start with the legal and company requirements
Jamaican driving law and rental company terms are separate tests. You need to satisfy both before paying for a vehicle.

Avis Jamaica says the renter and every additional driver must meet its age requirement, carry a valid licence, have an acceptable driving record and provide an Avis-honoured charge card or cash qualification. Avis says drivers must be over 23, the licence must remain valid for the full rental, and the original issue date must be at least one year before the rental begins. Major credit cards are accepted, along with some Visa or Mastercard debit cards under Avis policies. See the Avis Jamaica FAQs and Avis Jamaica policies for the branch terms that apply to your booking.
Enterprise at Norman Manley International Airport requires a minimum age of 23 and a maximum rental age of 75. The renter must present a valid licence, passport and major credit card in the renter's name. Cash and debit cards are not accepted at that location. Enterprise also places a hold or authorisation on the payment card, with the amount depending on the vehicle class and protection selected.
A foreign licence may be recognised under section 41 of Jamaica's Road Traffic Act, 2018 when it was issued by a prescribed country and covers the vehicle class you will drive. The licence is treated as a Jamaican licence for the relevant purposes until the earliest of its expiry date, your departure from Jamaica, or twelve months after arrival, with proof of entry. The Road Traffic Act, 2018 sets out this recognition rule.
An International Driving Permit is not a universal requirement when the foreign licence itself qualifies. A foreign licence, with or without an International Driving Permit, does not authorise commercial driving in a vehicle carrying passengers or goods for hire or reward. That restriction concerns commercial driving, not ordinary private use of a rental car.
The Jamaica Tourist Board's vehicle-rental guidance gives practical limits for some visitors. North Americans may use their home-country licence for up to three months per visit, United Kingdom residents for up to twelve months, and Japanese visitors for up to one month. The physical licence must be carried. If your licence is not in English or uses a non-Latin script, ask the rental branch whether a translation or International Driving Permit is required.
What a rental can cost
The amount shown for a vehicle is only one part of the bill. Your total can include the base vehicle rate, protection, taxes, deposit or card hold, fuel, child seats, additional drivers, airport charges, one-way fees, tolls and parking.
Hertz's Kingston Airport rate planner displayed these figures in USD as of October 2026:
Hertz states that its displayed figures are in USD, apply per rental or contract, include listed taxes and fees, and can fluctuate. The Hertz Kingston Airport page gives the live rate details for your dates.
Avis Jamaica publishes separate protection charges. As of October 2026, Partial Damage Waiver is US$15 per day for economy through intermediate vehicles, US$20 per day for SUVs, minivans, wagons, buses, panel vans and pickups, and US$30 per day for premium, full-size and large SUV categories. The published maximum liability is US$900, US$1,500 or US$3,000 respectively.
Avis's Loss Damage Waiver is US$25 per day for economy through intermediate vehicles, US$30 per day for SUVs, minivans, wagons, buses, panel vans and pickups, and US$40 per day for premium, full-size and large SUV categories. Avis includes third-party liability in quoted rates. Its normal security hold is US$200 to US$3,000, depending on vehicle group and coverage.
As of October 2026, Enterprise at Norman Manley International Airport lists a US$250 deductible for CDW-TP, with an Enterprise Protection Package that removes the deductible. Without acceptable insurance or a protection package, Enterprise lists deposits or card authorisations of US$2,000 for economy, compact and intermediate vehicles, US$2,500 for standard vehicles, SUVs and vans, and US$3,000 for full-size vehicles.
Enterprise also gives three fuel choices. You can prepay the tank with no refund for unused fuel, pay the rental company for fuel used and not replaced at its higher per-gallon price, or return the vehicle full. Avis says its vehicle is supplied with a full tank and recommends returning it full.
Ask for a written total in the operator's published currency. The quote should show whether each amount is per vehicle, per day, per rental or per person.
Airport pickup in Montego Bay and Kingston
Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Island, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty on its official car-rental page. MBJ Airports says the rental companies are in the Ground Transportation and Arrivals Hall after Customs. The Sangster International Airport rental information gives the current airport arrangement. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Montego Bay Airport (Sangster International).

The Airports Authority of Jamaica confirms that car rentals are available at Norman Manley International Airport. Current operator pages identify Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz at the Kingston airport. Avis lists a Norman Manley Airport branch open every day. Budget lists Norman Manley International Airport as an airport location. Enterprise lists a rental counter after Customs, and Hertz lists Kingston Airport as an airport location.
Airport counters, opening hours and after-hours procedures can change. Ask the selected company where to collect the vehicle, whether a shuttle is needed, how a delayed flight is handled and where the keys are returned after hours.
If you are staying in the capital, the Kingston transport operators directory can help you compare car hire with taxis, transfers and other local transport. Travellers using Norman Manley International Airport for accommodation in New Kingston can also compare the options in Kingston Airport to New Kingston, Jamaica.
For Montego Bay accommodation, compare airport pickup with a taxi or private transfer through Montego Bay Airport to Your Hotel: Getting to the Hip Strip, Rose Hall and Ironshore, Jamaica. A hire car may suit a stay with several stops, while a transfer may be simpler when you need transport only between the airport and hotel.
What to arrange before paying
Give the rental branch the details it needs to price the correct vehicle and pickup:
- Flight number and arrival date
- Passenger count
- Number and size of bags
- Child-seat type and quantity
- Exact hotel, villa or residential address
- Pickup airport or town branch
- Total price and currency
- Whether the price is per vehicle, per day or per rental
- Taxes and airport fees
- Protection, excess and exclusions
- Deposit or card-hold amount
- Waiting time if the flight is late
- Meeting point and shuttle details
- Payment method and accepted card type
- Fuel policy
- Mileage or kilometre allowance
- Additional-driver charge
- One-way drop-off charge
- Return location, date and time
- Late-return and after-hours key-drop procedure
Avis publishes that flight information can be used to arrange a delayed pickup, accepts major credit cards, offers child seats at many locations and charges one-way fees on some airport-to-city combinations. Enterprise publishes airport meeting-point information, after-hours arrangements, a US$30 after-hours service charge (as of October 2026), fuel choices, card requirements, one-way conditions and protection terms.
A town branch may suit you if you are already in Kingston, Montego Bay or another parish and do not need a vehicle immediately after landing. An airport branch may save a separate transfer, but the final total can include location charges, a one-way return fee or after-hours service. Compare matching quotes for the same dates, vehicle class, protection and return plan.
Check the vehicle before you leave the counter
Before driving away, review the agreement and the vehicle together. Record the condition with photographs or video, including every visible panel, wheel, windscreen and the interior.

Check:
- The protection or waiver selected
- The excess, deductible or maximum liability
- Exclusions for tyres, rims, glass, keys, underbody damage and unauthorised drivers
- The deposit or card authorisation amount
- Existing damage recorded on the agreement
- Mileage and fuel level
- The spare tyre, jack and tools
- The breakdown and roadside-assistance number
- Separate toll, parking and traffic-violation charges
- The exact return location, date and time
- The late-return process and after-hours key drop
- The fuel policy and refuelling charge
- Whether every additional driver is recorded
Enterprise says the renter is responsible for tolls, parking, traffic violations and related administrative charges. Ask how those charges are collected and whether an administrative fee applies.
Choosing a car for families, groups and mobility needs
Reserve the child seat before arrival. Ask for the seat type, quantity, daily or rental fee, installation responsibility and whether the seat will be fitted before collection. Avis says child seats for infants and toddlers are available at most locations, usually at US$5 per day with a maximum of US$25 per rental as of October 2026, subject to local availability. Enterprise recommends adding the child seat when you make the reservation.
Choose the vehicle by passenger count, luggage size and the number of bags you will carry inside the cabin. A vehicle advertised with several seats may have limited room for large suitcases. Avis says its fleet includes compact through full-size cars, SUVs, minivans and buses, but you may not receive the exact model listed.
If you need mobility equipment, ask the branch:
- Is the vehicle wheelchair-accessible for entry?
- What are the door width and floor height?
- Will a folded wheelchair fit with all passengers and bags?
- Are hand controls, spinner knobs or other adaptations available?
- Can airport transfer assistance be arranged?
- Can the vehicle be collected and returned at the required location?
- Does an accompanying driver need to be listed?
- Will the adaptation be installed before arrival?
- What happens if the required vehicle is unavailable?
A standard rental car should not be assumed to provide wheelchair access or adapted controls. Hertz publishes general information about child seats and equipment such as hand controls, but the Jamaican branch must confirm local availability.
Compare self-drive with other transport
Self-drive gives you control over stops, departure times and luggage, but you take responsibility for the vehicle, fuel, tolls, parking, return timing and driving decisions. A taxi or private transfer can suit a single airport trip. A coach can work for scheduled intercity travel, while a charter may suit a group with several planned stops.

For Kingston-area trips, compare self-drive with Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis. For Montego Bay, Getting Around Montego Bay, Jamaica: Taxis, Buses and Route Taxis covers local options. If you plan to cross the island, include tolls and driving time in the comparison. The Jamaica Highway Tolls: Highway 2000 and North-South Highway Rates explains the toll-road charges to include in your budget.
When a private driver fits better, settle the vehicle type, number of passengers, luggage space, stops, waiting time, total fare and payment terms before the pickup.
Common questions
Is renting a car in Jamaica a good idea?
It can be suitable when you qualify under Jamaican law and the company's rules, feel comfortable driving on the left, and want independent transport for several stops. Compare the complete rental cost with transfers, taxis and a private driver, including protection, deposits, fuel, tolls, parking, equipment and return charges.
How much is it to rent a car from the airport in Jamaica?
As of October 2026, Hertz displayed US$44 per rental day for a Toyota Yaris “good deal” figure, US$47 per rental day for a Toyota Corolla and US$55 per rental day for a Suzuki Swift Dzire at Kingston Airport. Hertz also displayed an average daily price of US$90, while protection, deposits, fuel, equipment and airport or one-way charges may add to the total.
Can US citizens rent a car in Jamaica?
Yes, if the driver meets Jamaican driving rules and the selected company's conditions. The Jamaica Tourist Board says North Americans may use their home-country licence for up to three months per visit when the licence qualifies, while Avis and Enterprise apply their own age, licence, passport and card requirements.
What are the requirements to rent a car in Jamaica?
You generally need to meet the company's minimum age, carry a physical licence valid for the full rental, show requested identity documents, provide an accepted payment card or qualification, and cover the deposit or card hold. Avis requires drivers to be over 23 and says the licence must have been issued at least one year earlier; Enterprise at Norman Manley Airport requires ages 23 to 75, a passport, valid licence and major credit card.
Is it cheaper to rent at the airport or downtown?
The answer depends on matching dates, vehicle class, protection, taxes, fuel terms, opening hours, airport charges and return conditions. Request written final quotes from both branch types and compare the total bill and deposit hold, not only the daily vehicle rate.
