Getting Around Kingston, Jamaica: JUTC Buses, Route Taxis and Taxis

Blue-hazed mountains rising behind a coastal capital seen from the harbour at dusk

You can get around Kingston and St. Andrew by JUTC bus, route taxi, hackney carriage taxi, pre-booked dispatch service, Uber or on foot for short central trips. A JUTC fare example is J$50 with SmartFare or J$100 cash for one passenger on Route 52B, while a route taxi costs a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre per passenger from July 1, 2026. A metered taxi starts at J$375, with distance and waiting charges added.

The right choice depends on your destination, pickup point, required arrival time, passenger count, luggage, mobility needs and payment method. If you can use a fixed route and an interchange, JUTC may suit you. If you need a direct address-to-address trip, arrange a taxi, dispatch service, Uber ride or private charter.

Choose the transport that fits your trip

JUTC buses operate on fixed routes across Kingston, St. Andrew and nearby communities. They suit regular travel between major hubs and are usually the lower-cost option when your destination is near a published route.

Fixed-route buses suit trips between published hubs and stops.

Route taxis carry passengers along marked routes and work well when you are travelling between places served by the same route. They are public passenger vehicles, and the route and fare matter because the price is generally quoted per passenger rather than for the whole vehicle.

Hackney carriages, commonly called taxis, provide direct trips using the Transport Authority’s approved meter structure. You can also arrange a private taxi, dispatch service or charter taxi in advance when you need an exact pickup address, airport timing, extra luggage space or a private vehicle.

Uber lists Kingston as an operating city. You request the ride through the app, which shows available vehicle types, the fare and payment details for the requested trip. UberXL is listed for groups of up to six people, subject to availability at your pickup location.

Walking can work for short trips around central Downtown Kingston when your destination is close to your starting point. For longer distances, steep routes, heavy bags or tight arrival times, use a vehicle or bus service that fits the details of your trip.

If you are comparing Kingston with other parts of the island, getting around Jamaica without a car explains how buses, taxis and other services fit together outside the capital.

Start at the transport hub closest to your route

Half Way Tree Transport Centre is the main JUTC interchange for many Kingston and St. Andrew trips. Published JUTC route information shows services from Half Way Tree towards City, Cross Roads, Papine, Barbican, Constant Spring, Spanish Town, Portmore and other destinations. Examples include routes 42, 49, 50, 54, 68, 74, 75, 77, 78, 83, 86, 87 and 88. If you need a meal near Half Way Tree, see where to eat in Half Way Tree. Portmore commuters can read about the Portmore to Kingston JUTC, route taxi and toll road options.

The Downtown Transport Hub serves JUTC routes, rural stage carriages, route taxis and hackney carriages. Published services from Downtown include routes towards Cross Roads, Papine, New Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, Jones Town, Chisholm Avenue, Norman Gardens, Rennock Lodge, Rollington Town, Franklin Town and Vineyard Town.

Papine is a major eastern interchange. JUTC services link Papine with City, Half Way Tree, Cross Roads, August Town, the University of the West Indies, Six Miles, Barbican and other communities. Route taxi listings also include Papine services towards Barbican through Liguanea and nearby areas.

Cross Roads connects with JUTC routes and route taxis serving City, Half Way Tree, Papine, Port Royal, August Town, Constant Spring, Barbican and surrounding communities. Route taxi listings include services from Cross Roads towards Arnett Gardens, Vineyard Town and Downtown.

When your trip begins or ends in the hills and communities around the parish, the St. Andrew transport operators page can help you identify services for that area.

JUTC buses, routes and SmartFare

JUTC is useful when your origin and destination sit on a published route, or when you are comfortable changing buses at Half Way Tree, Downtown, Papine or Cross Roads. Check the current route and timetable for the exact service because operating times and frequencies vary by route.

The Jamaica Tourist Board describes JUTC buses and taxis as major public transport options in Jamaica. JUTC route information includes services between Kingston hubs and communities across Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and Portmore.

JUTC’s SmartFare card is a rechargeable, cashless payment card. You load funds onto the card and tap when boarding. JUTC describes SmartFare as a pay-as-you-go option with faster boarding and lower fares than cash on published routes.

JUTC lists SmartFare locations at:

  • Half Way Tree Transport Centre
  • Downtown Transport Hub
  • Greater Portmore Office
  • Spanish Town Layby

JUTC also says a balance can be transferred if a card is lost or stolen. In October 2026, JUTC and GK One announced that SmartFare top-ups could be made through GK One, subject to the current service arrangements.

For Route 52B, JUTC’s fare information published in February 2025 and still displayed in October 2026 gives these fares:

Passenger or payment type Fare Unit and date
Adult with SmartFare J$50 One passenger, one journey, as displayed October 2026
Adult paying cash J$100 One passenger, one journey, as displayed October 2026
Senior with SmartFare J$25 One passenger, one journey, as displayed October 2026
Child, student or passenger with a disability with SmartFare J$20 One passenger, one journey, as displayed October 2026

These are Jamaican-dollar fares. The fare category and price can differ by route, so check the current JUTC information for the specific service you plan to use.

For wider route and fare information, see JUTC buses in Jamaica, including the services that connect Kingston with other parts of the island.

Route taxis for shared trips

Route taxis operate along marked routes and are listed by the Transport Authority as a public passenger vehicle category. They are suited to shared travel when your destination lies along the stated route.

Since July 1, 2026, a route taxi charges each passenger a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre, one way, rounded to a route fare. The final amount depends on your route, so tell the driver your destination, ask for the fare before boarding and have it ready in Jamaican dollars. For more on current rates, see Jamaica taxi fares in 2026.

A route taxi is different from a private charter taxi. The route taxi fare is per passenger for shared travel along the marked route. A charter taxi may quote a fixed price for the whole vehicle, so request the route, currency, unit, waiting time, stops and toll treatment in the quote.

Read how route taxis work in Jamaica if you have not used this type of service before.

Metered taxis, dispatch services and private transfers

The Transport Authority’s July 2026 hackney carriage rates are set out below.

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Charge Rate Unit and date
Base fare J$375 Per metered journey, July 2026
Distance J$75 Per kilometre, July 2026
Waiting J$39 Per five minutes, July 2026
Long-term hire J$1,197 Per hour, July 2026
Midnight to 5:00 a.m. 25% increase Applied to the metered fare, July 2026

These rates are metered and quoted per vehicle journey. They are not one fixed price for every trip across Kingston. A 10-kilometre trip before waiting charges would calculate to J$1,125. The final meter amount depends on the distance, waiting time and any applicable late-night increase.

Metered taxis follow the Transport Authority's approved fare structure.

For a pre-booked private taxi or dispatch service, the operator may give you a fixed fare instead of using the meter. Request the total price in the stated currency and ask whether it is per vehicle or per passenger. Include the exact address, passenger count, luggage, stops, tolls, parking and waiting time in the arrangement.

For airport travel, give the operator your flight number, arrival or departure time and exact meeting point. Norman Manley International Airport is in Kingston, and the airport terminal pickup details form part of the arrangement. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Kingston’s Norman Manley Airport. If the service is for an airport arrival, ask how much flight-delay waiting time is included.

Jamaica Wheelchair Taxi’s Kingston booking form asks for flight number, passenger count, destination address, wheelchair requirements and mobility type. Its Kingston airport transfer information describes vehicles for up to six passengers plus one wheelchair passenger and luggage, or up to four passengers plus two wheelchair passengers and luggage.

If a wheelchair remains occupied during travel, give the operator its dimensions and weight and ask whether the vehicle lift or ramp can accommodate it. Ask where the vehicle will meet you at the terminal and how much luggage space remains after the wheelchair is loaded.

Families can ask whether every passenger has a seat and whether a child seat or booster is available. Ask for the seat type, age or weight range, installation method and extra charge before payment.

Groups should ask for the maximum passenger capacity, luggage capacity and whether the quote is for the whole vehicle or each passenger. If you need a larger vehicle, request that vehicle type in the written arrangement.

Uber in Kingston

Uber lists Kingston as an operating city in Jamaica. You can request a ride when the app shows a vehicle at your location, or reserve a trip in advance where the feature is available.

The app displays the available vehicle type, fare and payment information for the requested trip. Uber’s Kingston page lists UberXL for groups of up to six people, although the vehicle type depends on the requested pickup location and live availability.

For an airport pickup, check the app for the exact meeting point, vehicle option, fare and payment method before confirming. Uber Reserve allows passengers to enter a flight number, and Uber says the app can provide flight updates and airport waiting time after landing where the feature is available.

Whichever app you use, the Transport Authority requires a vehicle carrying paying passengers to have red PPV plates and the driver to display a Transport Authority badge, so check both before you get in. The Uber in Jamaica guide explains how app-requested rides fit alongside route taxis, regular taxis and pre-booked services.

What to settle before you travel

Start with the destination and pickup point, then give the operator the required arrival time, number of passengers, number and size of bags, mobility requirements and payment method.

Settle the pickup point and luggage details before you leave the terminal.

For a private taxi, transfer or dispatch service, settle these details:

  • Flight number and arrival or departure time for airport travel
  • Exact hotel name, house name or full address
  • Number of passengers
  • Number and size of bags
  • Child seats or booster seats
  • Total price and currency
  • Whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger
  • One-way or return service
  • Waiting time included if a flight is delayed
  • Exact meeting point
  • Cash, card, bank transfer or app payment
  • Toll charges, parking charges and additional stops
  • Cancellation or rescheduling terms

Trident Taxi’s Kingston page includes fields for pickup address, destination, passenger count, flight number, luggage and other trip details. It publishes fixed fares confirmed before payment and lists Jamaican-dollar, card and bank-transfer payment options.

For an airport trip, request the full amount before leaving the terminal. For a route taxi, settle the destination and passenger fare before boarding. For JUTC, decide whether you will use cash or a loaded SmartFare card and allow time for a transfer if the route requires one.
