Yes, Uber currently lists Jamaica as an operating country, with Kingston and Ocho Rios among its Jamaican cities, plus Norman Manley International Airport and Sangster International Airport. Your app may show a different result based on your pickup point, destination and drivers online. For a local trip, an app can show an estimated fare and ETA, while airport and inter-parish trips are usually arranged for a set pickup time and quoted in Jamaican dollars or another published currency, either per vehicle or per person.
You can also arrange a taxi through a Jamaican app, a phone-dispatched taxi company, an airport desk, your hotel, a route-taxi stand or a pre-booked private transfer. The right choice depends on where you are starting, how many people are travelling, the luggage you have and whether you need a child seat, wheelchair access, upfront pricing or card payment.
How Uber works in Jamaica
Uber’s Jamaica page currently names Kingston and Ocho Rios and lists Norman Manley International Airport and Sangster International Airport. A car may not be available at every pickup point or at every hour. Open the app with your exact location and destination before relying on it.

The app can be useful if you want a pickup point, destination, estimated fare and driver details in one place. Availability still depends on drivers being online. If your pickup is outside a busy town, or you need a long airport or cross-island trip, arrange another option at the same time.
There is also a separate licensing question. The Transport Authority says a vehicle carrying passengers for payment must have the appropriate public passenger vehicle, or PPV, road licence. The driver must display a Transport Authority badge. Whether a particular ride meets those rules depends on the vehicle and driver, not on the app.
Before entering an app-arranged car, compare the driver name, vehicle details and plate number with the car in front of you. Ask to see the driver badge and check that the vehicle has the required red PPV plate.
Jamaican taxi apps and what they show
Several apps and platforms present taxi, ride-hailing, airport-transfer and rental services in Jamaica. Their coverage and payment choices differ, so enter your actual pickup point and destination before making a plan.
CoolRyds describes itself as a Jamaica-wide taxi-hailing app. Its instructions say you enter your pickup point and destination, select a ride type, view an estimate and ETA, see vehicle seating information, then request the ride. It requires a smartphone, mobile data and a Visa debit or credit card. CoolRyds also says its drivers must be licensed by the Transport Authority. See the CoolRyds FAQ for the booking requirements.
876 On The Go advertises taxi rides, airport transfers, ride-hailing, rentals and wheelchair transport across Jamaica. Its booking form asks for passenger count, pickup date and time, origin and destination. It presents standard, premium and additional pricing categories. Ask for the currency, date, service basis and inclusions before accepting a quote.
Rajlo presents private rides and shared route taxis. Its service describes upfront fares, driver tracking and wallet payment, with Visa and Mastercard top-ups. It states that fares are in JMD. Its route-taxi tariff, as shown on its “How It Works” page, is a J$132 base fare plus J$8.64 per kilometre. Ask Rajlo for the current fare before you travel.
OneGo says it serves all 14 parishes, with stronger coverage in Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and Portmore. It advertises car rides, bike rides, package delivery and rentals, with cash, Visa, Mastercard and OneGo Wallet payments.
Kruzacar describes island-wide rides, door-to-door booking and real-time vehicle tracking. Ride Jamaica Tourist Taxi’s Google Play listing presents airport transfers, tours, excursions, group transfers and ordinary local trips using Jamaica Tourist Board taxis. Jackie’s listing describes rides, taxis, charters, airport transfers and delivery in supported areas, with estimated prices, driver chat and trip tracking.
Drift’s site gives a Jamaica launch date of 1 November 2026, with driver onboarding from 15 October 2026. Make sure Drift is operating for your pickup before you rely on it.
Ordering a taxi without an app
A phone-dispatched taxi remains useful when your pickup point is outside app coverage, your phone data is limited or you want to speak with a company before travelling. The Transport Authority’s taxi-association directory lists hackney-carriage companies and route-taxi associations by parish, with telephone contacts. Kingston examples include On Time Taxi Service, Apollo Taxi Service, Blue Diamond Taxi-Cab, Cool Cabs and Corporate Area Taxi Association.

At Sangster International Airport, JUTA and JCAL operate from a shared airport taxi desk just outside Customs. The airport publishes JUTA at (876) 952-0813 and JCAL at (876) 952-7574. The arrivals area also includes hotel lounges and ground-transportation services. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport.
The Jamaica Tourist Board says private or chartered taxis can be arranged through a hotel or accommodation. This can suit a visitor who needs a particular hotel, villa or meeting point, or a family that wants one vehicle for the whole party.
You can also use an airport ground-transportation hall, a taxi stand or a designated route-taxi pickup point. Route taxis run along marked routes and carry separate-fare passengers. Confirm the destination and fare before entering, particularly if you are travelling beyond the main town or changing vehicles.
For an airport pickup, give the operator your flight number, arrival time, passenger count, luggage details and exact hotel or villa name. Ask where the driver will meet you, how long flight-delay waiting time lasts, and what happens if your flight arrives earlier or later than planned.
Checking the vehicle and driver
The app is a booking tool, not a road licence. The paid passenger service must use a vehicle with the required PPV road licence, and the driver must have the required Transport Authority badge and PPV driver’s licence.
The Transport Authority identifies these taxi details:
- Red PPV licence plates.
- A Transport Authority driver identification card inside the vehicle.
- A Transport Authority driver badge worn by the driver.
- A taxi globe on the roof.
- Black-and-white markings for route taxis.
- Black-and-yellow markings for hackney carriages.
- Route information displayed on route taxis.
- The appropriate road licence and insurance.
When the car arrives, compare the plate, vehicle and driver information with the details supplied through the app or by the operator. Ask to see the badge and confirm the plate number before boarding. If a paid passenger vehicle lacks the required red plate or road licence, the Transport Authority provides official telephone and WhatsApp channels for reporting the plate number.
The rules around ride-hailing have moved over the past two years. In February 2024 the Transport Authority said there was no agreement between Uber and Montego Bay contract-carriage groups. In July 2025 the Jamaica Gleaner reported a Government-announced 12-month ban on ride-hailing apps including Uber, inDrive and Lyft, and in December 2025 the Fair Trading Commission published a report on how Jamaica could regulate ride-hailing platforms. For a current trip, use the actual vehicle and driver details supplied at booking.
Families, groups and mobility needs
Tell the operator the full passenger count before accepting a vehicle. Include children, luggage and large items such as folding strollers, surfboards, musical instruments or several large suitcases.

For a child, ask: “Is a child restraint supplied, and what age, height and weight does it suit?” Jamaica’s road-traffic guidance places responsibility on the driver to transport children in the prescribed child-restraint system. Do not assume that a standard app category includes a child seat.
For a group, ask: “How many passengers and how many pieces of luggage can this exact vehicle carry?” 876 On The Go presents standard, premium and additional vehicle categories, while CoolRyds says vehicle seating information appears during the request process. Give the complete passenger and luggage count before payment.
For wheelchair transport, state whether the chair folds, whether you remain seated in it, its dimensions and weight, and whether you need a ramp or lift. Ask: “Can the vehicle take this chair, how is it secured, and can I remain in the chair during the trip?”
876 On The Go advertises wheelchair-accessible transport and accessible vans. CareGo advertises ramp-equipped, secured wheelchair transport in Kingston and St. Andrew, with WhatsApp and telephone bookings. Jamaica Wheelchair Taxi publishes accessible vans and buses, including vehicles for up to four passengers plus one wheelchair passenger, up to four passengers plus two wheelchair passengers, and larger group vehicles.
Request the exact vehicle type, ramp or lift arrangement, securement method, passenger capacity, luggage space, assistance provided, fare, cancellation terms and advance-booking requirement. A standard car category may not carry a non-folding wheelchair or provide a child seat.
Settle the price and pickup details first
A clear quote needs more than a number. Ask for the total price and currency, then record the details below.
- Per vehicle or per person.
- One way, return or hourly.
- Inclusive of waiting time.
- Inclusive of stops, luggage, tolls, late-night service and extra passengers.
- Payable by cash, card or wallet.
- Due at booking, pickup or the end of the trip.

Keep each service type separate when comparing prices. A route-taxi fare per passenger is different from a private airport transfer per vehicle. A hotel-arranged taxi may have a different basis from an app estimate. Do not convert a published USD quote into JMD yourself.
For the same trip, enter the same pickup and destination into each app or request quotes from the same type of taxi service. Compare the currency, vehicle size, passenger capacity, waiting terms, payment method and inclusions along with the fare.
For airport pickups, provide the flight number and arrival time. Ask where you will meet the driver, how the driver will identify you, how much waiting time is included and what extra amount applies after that period. For hotel, villa and home pickups, give the full street address, property name, entrance and a nearby meeting point if the address is difficult to locate.
If you are travelling from Kingston, the Kingston airport to New Kingston transport guide covers taxi and bus choices, and where to eat near Kingston’s Norman Manley Airport helps if you land hungry. For a Montego Bay arrival, see Montego Bay Airport to Your Hotel. Travellers comparing a car with public transport can use How to Get Around Jamaica Without a Car. Common questions
Is there Uber in Jamaica?
Yes. Uber’s Jamaica page currently lists Jamaica, Kingston and Ocho Rios, along with Norman Manley International Airport and Sangster International Airport. Live availability depends on the pickup area, destination and drivers online, and the vehicle still needs the required PPV road licence and driver badge described by the Transport Authority.
What is the best taxi app in Jamaica?
There is no single best taxi app for every trip. CoolRyds publishes estimates, ETAs and seating information, Rajlo presents private rides and route taxis, OneGo states coverage across all 14 parishes, and 876 On The Go advertises airport and wheelchair transport. Choose the service that covers your exact pickup, shows the right vehicle capacity and states the fare, currency and payment method.
Does Jamaica use Lyft?
Lyft’s official city list covers cities in the United States and Canada, with additional coverage in parts of Europe. For a Jamaican trip, arrange a Jamaican taxi, a local app or a pre-booked transfer.
How do I order a taxi in Jamaica?
Request a ride through an app, call a taxi company or parish taxi association, use the airport taxi desk, ask your hotel to arrange a taxi, or use a route-taxi stand. At Sangster International Airport, the shared desk outside Customs serves JUTA and JCAL. Before boarding, match the driver and vehicle details, check the red PPV plate and ask to see the Transport Authority badge.
Who’s cheaper, Uber or a taxi in Jamaica?
The cheaper choice depends on the same route, date, vehicle type, passenger count, luggage, stops, waiting time, tolls and payment terms. Compare both prices in the same currency and record whether each quote is per vehicle or per person, one way, return or hourly. A route-taxi fare and a private airport-transfer quote are different services, so compare like with like.
