Montego Bay to Kingston, Jamaica: Every Way to Make the Trip

A highway winding through green mountains with morning mist in central Jamaica

You can travel from Montego Bay to Kingston by scheduled coach, premium coach, domestic flight, private vehicle, hire car, or several local public-transport services. By road, allow about 3 to 4 hours on the north-coast A1 route, or about 4 to 5 hours by the south-coast route. Published prices range from InterMetroONE’s JMD 3,675 Premium Express fare per passenger, one way, to date-specific coach, flight and private-vehicle quotes.

Your choice depends on where you need to start and finish, how much luggage you have, how many people are travelling, and whether you need a fixed departure or door-to-door service.

Choose the service that fits your trip

A scheduled coach suits you if you want a published departure, a fixed terminal and a fare charged per passenger. A private transfer suits families, groups and travellers with several bags who need pickup at a hotel, home, office or airport. A hire car gives you control over stops, but you pay for the rental, fuel, tolls and the rental company’s applicable charges. If you have not booked flights yet, see choosing between the Montego Bay and Kingston airports.

Scheduled coaches run from terminal to terminal, so plan the ride at each end.

If you land at Sangster International Airport hungry, here is where to eat near Montego Bay Airport. A domestic flight can reduce the time spent on the road, although you still need airport check-in, luggage handling and transport from the Kingston arrival airport. Route taxis and minibuses can cost less for individual legs, but the trip requires changes through local transport points.

If you are travelling around Montego Bay before departure, see getting around Montego Bay by taxi, bus and route taxi. For a private vehicle, private driver costs and questions to ask in Jamaica can help you prepare your request.

Scheduled coach

Knutsford Express has Montego Bay departure points at its branch near Pier 1 and its airport branch at Donald Sangster International Airport. In Kingston, the operator lists New Kingston at 18 Dominica Drive and the KGN-Sangster south location.

The current Knutsford booking interface can return an itinerary using a connecting bus. Each part is booked and paid for separately, and connection times are approximate. Select the exact date, origin, destination and passenger category before paying. Knutsford’s service is office to office, so hotel pickup and extra hotel stops are not part of the standard coach arrangement.

The Montego Bay Airport passenger office is listed as open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. New Kingston is listed as open daily from 4:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can book through Knutsford Express or contact the operator by telephone or WhatsApp at +1 876 971 1822.

Knutsford publishes fares in Jamaican dollars and United States dollars. Its fare table is selected by route, date and passenger category. The listed passenger fares are one way. Children are ages 2 to 12, seniors are 65 and older, and students need valid local university identification. Additional luggage attracts a fee. Because the fare changes with the booking details, keep the currency and passenger unit with the amount shown at checkout.

Premium coach

InterMetroONE publishes a Montego Bay to Kingston Premium Express Non Stop service. Its service-rates page displays JMD 3,675 per passenger, one way, with a displayed departure time of 6:00 a.m. as of October 2026.

Ask InterMetroONE for the service date, terminal addresses, luggage terms, payment method and whether the quoted amount includes taxes or other charges.

The service may suit you if you want a scheduled premium coach and the departure time works for your appointment or connection. It is still a terminal-to-terminal service, so include your transport to Montego Bay’s departure point and from the Kingston arrival point.

Domestic flight

AirLink Express lists Montego Bay departures from the Domestic Terminal at Sangster International Airport. Its Kingston arrival choices include Tinson Pen Aerodrome and Norman Manley International Airport. AirLink’s booking page lists Montego Bay to Kingston options and displays totals in USD.

AirLink requests passenger names and weights, luggage pieces and estimated luggage weight, lodging details and flight information. Availability and takeoff times can change by date. AirLink can be contacted through its booking system, telephone, WhatsApp or email.

MBJ Airports lists AirLink at +1 876 940 0195 and +1 876 940 6660. It lists TimAir at +1 876 952 2516 and +1 876 979 1114. Ask TimAir directly for its current fare and timetable.

A nonstop domestic flight has historically taken about 40 to 50 minutes in the air. That is separate from the full airport-to-destination time. Add check-in, boarding, luggage collection and the ride from Tinson Pen or Norman Manley International Airport to your final address. For more detail, see domestic flights between Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril.

JUTC buses, route taxis and minibuses

JUTC is Jamaica’s public bus operator, with its network focused on Kingston, Spanish Town, Portmore and surrounding rural routes. JUTC's Rural Express has connected Montego Bay and Kingston since 2025, launched at J$2,000 per passenger, one way. Ask JUTC for the current departure point, timetable and fare; its bus routes guide lists routes and indicative times.

Route taxis and minibuses are regulated public passenger services under the Transport Authority. A Montego Bay to Kingston trip by these services normally involves several local legs and changes through major towns, rather than one vehicle travelling the full distance. Confirm the fare, departure point and next connection for each leg before boarding. Cabinet approved a 16% public passenger vehicle fare increase in two phases, on June 2 and July 1, 2026.

This option can work when you are comfortable changing vehicles and arranging each section locally. It is less suited to a tight appointment, a large amount of luggage or a group that needs to arrive together.

Private transfer

A private transfer is arranged directly with a taxi driver, a contract-carriage operator or a private driver. The quote is normally for the vehicle, although some operators use a per-passenger price. Request the total in JMD or USD and keep the unit with the quote.

Give the operator your exact pickup address, drop-off address, travel date, departure time, passenger count, luggage count and flight number if you are arriving at Sangster International Airport. Ask whether the price includes hotel pickup, hotel drop-off, tolls, fuel, waiting time, luggage, stops and taxes.

A private vehicle can use the A1 route, the south-coast route or sections of Highway 2000. The driver can also plan for a flight connection, medical appointment, school visit, family event or return later the same day. Waiting time and overtime need to be priced separately if you are keeping the vehicle in Kingston.

For airport arrangements, compare the service with an airport transfer or taxi in Jamaica, especially when your group needs a particular vehicle size or child restraint.

Hire car

A rental car lets you set your own departure time and stops. Arrange the rental period, vehicle class, deposit, insurance or protection terms, mileage policy, fuel policy, one-way fee, toll arrangement and taxes with the rental company.

The rental price is separate from fuel and tolls unless the company states that they are included. If you are collecting the car at Sangster International Airport and returning it in Kingston, ask about the return location and any one-way charge. Driving in Jamaica as a visitor covers licences, road use and visitor requirements.

Roads, distances and tolls

The north-coast A1 route runs through Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Spanish Town and Kingston. A planning distance is about 170 to 190 kilometres, depending on your exact addresses. The route commonly takes about 3 to 4 hours, but traffic, weather, stops and road conditions can change the time. For meals along the way, see where to eat on a Jamaican road trip. If you are starting at the airport rather than in town, see Montego Bay Airport to Kingston by coach, flight, taxi or hire car.

The north-coast A1 route passes Falmouth on the way east to Kingston.

The route passes through St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann and St. Catherine before reaching Kingston. You can compare operators in St. James parish, St. Ann parish, St. Catherine parish and Kingston transport services when arranging local pickup or drop-off.

The south-coast route runs through Savanna-la-Mar, Black River, Santa Cruz, Mandeville, May Pen, Spanish Town and Kingston. It is longer and generally takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on conditions. It may make sense when your pickup or destination is on the south side of the island.

A mixed toll-road route uses Highway 2000 sections near Kingston, Spanish Town, May Pen and Mandeville, then continues west on non-tolled roads. Highway 2000 is not one continuous tolled motorway from Montego Bay to Kingston.

The Toll Authority’s Jamaican-dollar Class 1 cash rates published on August 3, 2026 include:

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Toll point Class 1 cash rate
Portmore JMD 400
Spanish Town JMD 290
Vineyards JMD 850
May Pen JMD 295
Toll Gate main line JMD 530
Toll Gate ramp JMD 270

T-Tag rates are lower at several plazas. Vehicle class depends on height and, for larger vehicles, length. The Toll Authority lists a 110 km/h speed limit on the East-West Highway. Tolls are charged per vehicle passage, not per passenger.

The North-South Highway is separate. For the 66.14-kilometre Caymanas to Ocho Rios section, the Toll Authority's August 3, 2026 table lists JMD 2,500 for a Class 1 car one way, while the NROCC schedule effective August 28, 2026 lists JMD 1,900; carry enough for the higher figure. That road does not take you directly to Montego Bay. See Jamaica Highway 2000 tolls and North-South Highway rates when calculating a hire-car or private-transfer total.

Airport and road status after Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, 2025. Sangster International Airport was temporarily closed in an MBJ Airports advisory dated October 26. On October 31, MBJ said preparations were underway for limited commercial flights from 7:00 a.m. on November 1, and instructed passengers to confirm flights with their airline before travelling to the airport.

Check flight and road status close to departure, as conditions can change.

MBJ’s current domestic-airline page lists Sangster International Airport as operating domestic connections through AirLink and TimAir. The airport and carrier status still depends on your travel date.

After the hurricane, the National Works Agency reported that the Savanna-la-Mar to Montego Bay corridor had reopened or been cleared by October 31, 2025. Jamaican authorities reported on November 3 and 6 that the major corridor linking Kingston, Mandeville, Black River, Savanna-la-Mar, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios was drivable, although some sections had single-lane traffic.

The NWA road-status summary dated December 15, 2025 reported affected roads in Kingston, St. James, Manchester, St. Catherine, Trelawny, Westmoreland and most other parishes open to two-way traffic. In February 2026, NWA reported continuing repairs around Montego Bay and to a damaged Over River bridge in St. James. Flooding, landslides, bridge repairs and road works can create local delays or diversions.

Confirm the flight, coach, road and operator status immediately before departure.

Settle these details before paying

Give the operator the exact travel date and departure time. If you are connecting from a flight, provide the flight number and ask what waiting time is included if the flight arrives late.

Luggage beside a car ready to be loaded
Count bags and passengers together before agreeing a vehicle size.

Keep these details together:

  • Passenger count and passenger categories.
  • Luggage count, size and weight.
  • Children’s ages and child-seat requirements.
  • Exact hotel, home, business or street address.
  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the amount is per person or per vehicle.
  • Whether the fare is one way or return.
  • Exact pickup or meeting point.
  • Drop-off point and hotel-service terms.
  • Stops, detours or sightseeing requests.
  • Tolls, fuel, taxes and luggage charges.
  • Payment method, deposit, cancellation and refund terms.
  • Contact number for delays or changes.

Families should ask, “What is the vehicle capacity for these adults, children and bags together?” Ask whether a child seat is available, what type it is, what it costs, whether an approved restraint is required, and whether an infant carrier or booster seat is permitted.

Groups should ask for the exact vehicle type, passenger capacity and quote unit. Ask whether all passengers and luggage will travel together or whether multiple vehicles will be used. Include tolls, stops, waiting and hotel drop-off in the written price.

Travellers with mobility needs should ask whether the vehicle has step-free access, the door and seat dimensions, a ramp or lift, and space for a wheelchair. Ask whether the wheelchair can remain assembled, whether it travels in the cabin or luggage area, whether airport or terminal assistance is available, how much boarding time is needed, and whether mobility equipment has a separate charge.
