You can travel from Montego Bay town to Ocho Rios by scheduled coach, local route taxi and coaster services, private taxi or transfer, or rental car. The road distance is about 100 kilometres, and a direct car trip usually takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in ordinary conditions. Published passenger fares include JAA Rapid Transit prices from J$2,300 to J$2,800 per passenger, one way (2026), while private taxis and rental cars are priced separately by operator, vehicle and rental period.
Choose the service that fits your trip
Your choice depends mainly on whether you want the lowest passenger fare, a fixed departure, fewer changes, door-to-door travel or control of your own stops.

A scheduled coach suits you if you want a reserved seat, a stated departure and a passenger fare. Knutsford Express lists Montego Bay locations and services toward Ocho Rios and Drax Hall. JAA Rapid Transit publishes an Ocho Rios to Montego Bay service and also lists a Montego Bay to Kingston service that stops in Ocho Rios.
Local route taxis and coaster buses can cost less per passenger, but the trip may involve changes in Falmouth, Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay or Brown’s Town. The Transport Authority regulates route taxis and stage-carriage services by route. Ask at the Montego Bay Transportation Centre, near the southern end of St. James Street and Barnett Street, for the current vehicle, route and transfer point.
A private taxi or transfer can collect you at a home, hotel, business or street address in Montego Bay and take you to an address in Ocho Rios. Arrange the service with a taxi association, hotel, transport operator or direct driver booking. Ask for the total price in Jamaican dollars or US dollars, the number of passengers included and the exact drop-off.
A rental car gives you control over stops in Trelawny and St. Ann, but your cost includes the rental period, fuel, deposit, insurance conditions, optional equipment and any applicable tolls. For driving rules and licence requirements, see Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules.
Scheduled coaches from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios
Knutsford Express
Knutsford Express lists Montego Bay town locations at 10 Harbour Circle near Pier 1 and 1222 Providence Drive in Ironshore. The Montego Bay Airport location is separate from this town-to-town trip.

In Ocho Rios, the company lists Shop 18 at Ocean Village Shopping Center and Lot 12 at Drax Hall Estates in Drax Hall, St. Ann. Your booking result determines the exact departure point and destination for the date you enter.
The official booking system asks for your travel date, origin, destination and passenger details before displaying the fare. The service is booked per passenger, with single and return options and separate passenger categories. Enter Montego Bay as your origin and Ocho Rios or Drax Hall as your destination before paying.
The selected booking also gives you the applicable fare, departure time, luggage terms and any connection details. Ask the booking office or company representative about the exact boarding point if you are leaving from central Montego Bay rather than one of the listed locations.
For the wider service pattern, see Knutsford Express in Jamaica: Routes, Schedules, Fares and Booking.
JAA Rapid Transit
JAA Rapid Transit publishes a morning Ocho Rios to Montego Bay departure at 8:05 a.m. The listed route includes both towns, and the published fare table gives the following one-way passenger prices in Jamaican dollars:
These fares were published by JAA Rapid Transit in 2026 and are subject to change. One checked bag up to 50 pounds and one carry-on up to 20 pounds are included per passenger. The listed additional-bag charges are J$1,200 for the third piece, J$1,500 for the fourth and J$2,000 for each additional piece beyond four.
The published fare is for Ocho Rios to Montego Bay. If you are travelling from Montego Bay toward Ocho Rios, ask JAA Rapid Transit for the available departure, boarding point and fare for your exact date.
JUTC services
JUTC’s published route 610 connects Ocho Rios with Kingston. The notice effective 17 December 2025 lists a fare of J$550 cash for an adult and J$500 for an adult using SmartFare on that route. That price applies to Ocho Rios to Kingston, not to Montego Bay to Ocho Rios.
JUTC’s 2026/27 operational plan includes expanding Montego Bay operations. For a Montego Bay to Ocho Rios trip, ask JUTC for the current route, departure time, fare and transfer point before relying on a connection.
Local buses and route taxis
A local public-transport trip usually involves separate sections rather than one reserved through-ticket. You may travel from Montego Bay toward Falmouth, then continue through Discovery Bay or Runaway Bay before reaching Ocho Rios. Another option may involve Brown’s Town, depending on the route operating on your date.
Ask the dispatcher or operator for each leg’s fare before boarding. The public passenger vehicle fare increase that took full effect on July 1, 2026 sets route-taxi rates of J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre. Rural stage-carriage rates are listed as J$53 base plus J$7.02 per kilometre. These are regulated route formulas, and the exact amount depends on the section travelled.
Route taxis and coaster buses are priced per passenger. Shared vehicles can make several stops, and the total time depends on waiting for a vehicle, changing routes and traffic through the north-coast towns.
The main Montego Bay Transportation Centre is the practical starting point for local buses and route taxis. In Ocho Rios, local vehicles generally use the Ocho Rios Transportation Centre or designated town stops. Ask where to change before you leave Montego Bay, especially if you are carrying luggage or travelling with children. Once you reach town, here is where to eat in Ocho Rios beyond the cruise port.

Private taxis and transfers
A private taxi or transfer is arranged directly with the operator and is normally quoted per vehicle, one way or return. The price can change with the number of passengers, luggage, stops, waiting time, sightseeing, tolls and the final address.

Give the operator the complete Montego Bay pickup address and Ocho Rios drop-off address. A hotel name alone may not identify the correct entrance, so include the street or business address when possible.
Request a dated quote that states:
- Jamaican dollars or US dollars.
- One-way or return travel.
- Vehicle size and passenger capacity.
- Luggage quantity and oversized items.
- Hotel, home or business pickup and drop-off.
- Stops, detours and sightseeing time.
- Waiting charges and late-arrival terms.
- Tolls and other additional charges.
- Payment method, deposit, cancellation and refund terms.
Airport-transfer prices are not automatically town-to-town prices. If your trip begins after arriving at Sangster International Airport, ask the taxi desk for the total fare to your hotel or other Montego Bay address before leaving the airport. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Montego Bay Airport. For a separate airport question, see Montego Bay Airport to Ocho Rios, Jamaica: Transfers, Taxis, Coaches and Costs.
Families, groups and mobility needs
Families should ask whether children under the operator’s age threshold receive a child fare or travel free. Ask whether an infant carrier or child seat is required, whether the operator supplies it, and what charge applies.
Give the number of adults and children, their ages, the number of bags, the weight of heavy items and the number of strollers. Ask whether the vehicle has enough space for everyone and everything.
Groups should ask for the maximum passenger capacity, the number and size of vehicles, and whether the quote is per vehicle or per passenger. Ask whether everyone travels together, whether the operator is supplying a private coach, minibus or several cars, and whether luggage is included or charged separately.
If you use a wheelchair or mobility scooter, ask these exact questions:
- Can the vehicle carry a folded wheelchair or mobility scooter?
- Is there a ramp, lift or level boarding?
- Can the passenger remain in the wheelchair during travel?
- What are the vehicle door width, step height and luggage limits?
- Can assistance be provided at boarding and drop-off?
- Is the requested vehicle reserved for your booking or subject to availability?
- What happens if the vehicle supplied is not accessible?
JAA Rapid Transit publishes passenger categories and luggage allowances. Ask JAA Rapid Transit for the exact vehicle and equipment on your departure.
Renting a car and driving the North Coast Highway
A rental car is priced per vehicle and rental period rather than per passenger. Before paying, obtain the complete rate for the dates you need, including fuel arrangements, insurance conditions, deposit, additional drivers, roadside assistance, child seats and any applicable tolls.

The route from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is approximately 100 kilometres. The North Coast Highway passes through or near Falmouth, Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay and other coastal communities. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance gives the trip as less than two hours by car. Allow about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in ordinary conditions. If Runaway Bay is your stop, the Montego Bay Airport to Runaway Bay routes cover that shorter drive.
That estimate can increase with town traffic, road works, rain, stops, detours or storm recovery work. It is a planning estimate, not a scheduled arrival time. For a meal on the way, see where to eat on a Jamaican road trip.
The Montego Bay to Ocho Rios road corridor was reported drivable by 3 November 2025, after Hurricane Melissa. On 6 November 2025, the government said access had been restored along key transport corridors extending through Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
The National Works Agency’s 15 December 2025 status summary listed all 33 affected roads in St. Ann, all 32 affected roads in St. James and all 19 affected roads in Trelawny as open on two lanes. Smaller local roads can differ, so ask the driver about your exact route. In February 2026, the agency announced a six-week patching and rehabilitation programme affecting roads in Montego Bay and other western areas, with possible delays during the work.
Sangster International Airport closed at midday on 26 October 2025 ahead of Hurricane Melissa. Limited commercial flights were prepared for 1 November 2025, and commercial and relief operations later resumed. Airport activity and cruise-port status are separate from the town-to-town road service. Operators can change schedules because of weather, road works, fleet issues or operating decisions, so confirm your service for the intended date.
