Montego Bay Airport to Runaway Bay, Jamaica: Getting There and What It Costs

A calm turquoise bay with small fishing boats moored near a quiet shore

From Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Runaway Bay or Discovery Bay, you can take an authorised airport taxi, arrange a private transfer, use a shared shuttle, combine a scheduled coach with local transport, take route taxis, or hire a car. A direct vehicle usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, covering roughly 70 to 75 kilometres, or 44 to 47 miles. Published private-transfer prices range from US$65 to US$140 one way, while route taxis charge separate Jamaican-dollar fares per passenger on each local leg.

Your choice depends on the exact hotel or villa address, passenger and luggage numbers, arrival time, and whether you want a direct vehicle or a trip with transfers and shared stops.

Start at the airport taxi desk or arrange your ride before flying

Sangster International Airport, also called MBJ in booking information, has an authorised airport taxi desk outside Customs. The two airport taxi companies identified by the airport are JUTA Taxi and JCAL Taxi. At the desk, give the destination as the exact Runaway Bay or Discovery Bay accommodation, not only the town name, because resorts and villas can sit along different parts of the coast.

Give the desk your exact Runaway Bay or Discovery Bay address, not only the town name.

The MBJ airport taxi information identifies the authorised companies and the shared desk location. Ask the desk for the total price to your Runaway Bay accommodation before leaving the airport. Ask whether the quote is per vehicle or per passenger, and whether luggage, waiting time, extra stops or a return trip changes the amount.

If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport. If you arrange transport in advance, the MBJ airport transfer and tour operator directory includes companies serving airport passengers. Private-transfer operators advertising Runaway Bay include MBJ Airport Express Shuttle, Island Pride Tours, Round Island Adventure Tours and Reggae Tours Jamaica.

How far is Runaway Bay from Sangster International Airport?

Published route estimates put the road distance from Sangster International Airport to Runaway Bay at about 70 to 75 kilometres, or approximately 44 to 47 miles. One route description gives 73.2 kilometres via the A1, while another gives 75.5 kilometres.

Estimated driving times range from about 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. For planning, allow about 1 to 1.5 hours by direct vehicle. Traffic, road conditions, your accommodation’s exact location and stops can change the timing. These are road estimates, not a scheduled arrival time.

Discovery Bay is west of Runaway Bay, so a direct airport trip there is usually somewhat shorter. Your accommodation address still matters, especially when it is outside the main town centre. For a meal near your stay, see where to eat in Runaway Bay.

The airport is in St. James, the road continues through the north coast corridor near Trelawny, and Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay are in St. Ann. You can compare operators serving the route through the St. James transport directory, Trelawny transport directory and St. Ann transport directory.

Private airport transfers and published prices

A pre-booked private transfer gives you a vehicle arranged for your flight and accommodation. The price may be per vehicle for a stated number of passengers, so passenger count and luggage size affect which vehicle you need.

The following prices are published examples for this route. They are separate operator prices with different terms, and they are not a single airport taxi tariff.

Island Pride Tours publishes US$65 one way to Runaway Bay hotels and US$130 return. The same rate page lists shared transport at US$16 one way and US$30 return. Ask which service applies to your booking and whether the quoted vehicle is private or shared.

Round Island Adventure Tours publishes US$80 one way for 1 to 3 passengers, US$160 return, and an additional US$20 per passenger above the stated group size.

Reggae Tours Jamaica publishes an accessible Runaway Bay transfer from US$140 one way. The listed vehicle has a hydraulic lift, can carry one wheelchair passenger and can take up to 10 passengers. The published starting price excludes 7% fees.

A private transfer can suit a family with several bags, a late arrival, or anyone who wants to travel directly to a resort. Before paying, ask for the exact total in the quoted currency, the passenger limit, vehicle type, luggage capacity, meeting point and cancellation terms.

Shared shuttle service to Runaway Bay

Shared airport transport is advertised for Runaway Bay by JAITAL and by Island Pride Tours. Shared service can have a lower fare than a private vehicle, but the trip may include waiting at the airport or stops for other passengers.

JAITAL’s Montego Bay shuttle information advertises shared airport transfers serving Runaway Bay. Ask for the current price, hotel coverage, luggage allowance, waiting time and number of stops for your arrival date.

Island Pride Tours publishes a shared price of US$16 one way and US$30 round trip. That price is listed separately from its US$65 private one-way transfer to Runaway Bay hotels.

If your accommodation is in Discovery Bay, give the complete address when asking for a shared shuttle. A service that covers Runaway Bay may have different hotel coverage for Discovery Bay or may require a local connection.

Scheduled coach plus a local taxi

Knutsford Express publishes passenger locations at Sangster International Airport, Falmouth, Drax Hall in St. Ann and Ocho Rios. A coach trip can work if one of those locations fits your arrival and you are ready to arrange the final road section separately.

A long-distance coach waiting at a terminal bay
The coach stops at set locations, so the last stretch to the resort needs a local taxi.

From Drax Hall or Ocho Rios, ask a local taxi or route taxi to take you to the exact resort. From Falmouth, ask for onward transport towards Discovery Bay or Runaway Bay. If you reach a public transport point in either town, arrange a local taxi or resort pickup for the last part of the trip.

Knutsford Express passenger locations on this side of the island are Sangster International Airport, Falmouth, Drax Hall and Ocho Rios, so do not plan around a roadside coach drop-off in Runaway Bay or Discovery Bay. Ask Knutsford Express for the terminal, departure time and permitted onward connection for your date. The company’s current information is available through Knutsford Express.

A scheduled coach is different from a private airport transfer. You will need to account for the trip from the airport to the coach departure point, the coach schedule, any transfer between terminals and the final taxi.

Route taxis between Falmouth, Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay

A route taxi is a public passenger vehicle that carries separate-fare passengers along an authorised route. The Transport Authority says route taxis may stop to pick up or set down passengers along their approved route.

The Transport Authority identifies route taxis by features including:

  • Red PPV licence plates
  • “Route Taxi” written on the doors
  • The route printed on the front doors
  • A roof sign bearing the word “Taxi”
  • A black-and-white checked pattern
  • A Transport Authority driver identification card
  • A Transport Authority driver identification badge
  • An electronic monitoring device

Since July 1, 2026, route-taxi fares have been set at a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, one way, so a short coastal leg such as Runaway Bay to Discovery Bay costs a few hundred Jamaican dollars. Ask the driver for the fare on each leg before boarding. These are shared-seat fares; they do not include airport pickup, private waiting time, luggage handling or a final resort transfer.

You may need to change vehicles at Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay, St. Ann’s Bay or another public transport point. Ask the driver before boarding whether the vehicle reaches your intended town and where to change for the accommodation.

Route taxis are more useful for travellers who are comfortable reaching a public transport point and arranging the final section separately. They are not the same as a private airport vehicle waiting for your flight.

Hiring a car from Sangster International Airport

The Airports Authority of Jamaica lists Apex, Avis, Budget and Central Rent-a-Car among rental companies serving Sangster International Airport. A hire car lets you set your own departure time and travel directly to your accommodation, but you need to arrange the vehicle, insurance terms, deposit, payment method and airport collection details before arrival. If you are continuing on to Ocho Rios afterwards, see Montego Bay to Ocho Rios by coach, taxi or drive.

A hire car lets you set your own departure time and drive straight to your accommodation.

Give the rental company the exact accommodation address and ask about the vehicle’s luggage capacity. Families should ask whether a child seat or booster seat is available and whether it carries a separate charge. If you are travelling with a wheelchair or other equipment, ask about boot space and loading access.

If you plan to stop for a meal on the drive, see where to eat in Jamaica on a road trip. Read Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules before choosing a rental car. You can also compare the practical costs in Renting a Car in Jamaica: Requirements, Costs and Airport Pickup.

Details to settle before paying

Give the transport company or airport taxi desk enough information to quote the correct vehicle and price:

  • Flight number and arrival date
  • Number of passengers
  • Number, size and type of bags
  • Child seats or booster seats
  • Exact hotel, villa or street address
  • Total price and currency
  • Whether the price is per vehicle or per person
  • One-way or return direction
  • Waiting time if the flight is late
  • Airport meeting point
  • Driver identification or company name
  • Payment method, deposit and cancellation terms
  • Extra charges for stops, additional passengers, luggage or late-night service
  • Whether the vehicle is direct or shared

MBJ Airport Express Shuttle publishes passenger limits, destination pricing, child seats on request, flight tracking and Desk 4 as its meeting point. Reggae Tours publishes a numbered airport desk, flight-change instructions, accessibility information and cancellation terms. Other companies publish different combinations of details, so ask for written information covering your specific booking.

Use one clear description of the destination. For example, give the resort name, parish and full street address, followed by the number of adults, children, bags and any mobility equipment.

Families should ask, “Can you provide the correct number of seats, and are child seats or booster seats available for this date?” For luggage, ask, “How many suitcases and carry-on bags fit in the vehicle with all passengers seated?”

Travellers using wheelchairs should ask:

  • Can the chair remain assembled during loading?
  • Does the vehicle have a ramp or hydraulic lift?
  • What are the maximum chair dimensions and weight?
  • How many wheelchair users can travel?
  • How much luggage space remains after loading the chair?
  • Is the same type of accessible vehicle available for the return trip?
  • Where will the vehicle meet you at the airport and accommodation?

Reggae Tours publishes a hydraulic-lift service for one wheelchair passenger and up to 10 passengers. Ken’s Wheelchair Service and Tours advertises airport transfers serving Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay and accepts car-seat requests. Availability depends on the travel date and vehicle schedule.

Hurricane Melissa recovery information

Sangster International Airport closed temporarily on October 26, 2025, during Hurricane Melissa. Relief flights began on October 30, and commercial operations resumed on November 1, 2025, as reported by the Jamaica Information Service.

On December 13, 2025, the Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Transport reported that Airports Authority of Jamaica-managed airports had returned to normal operations. Government updates dated November 4 and November 6, 2025, reported that the Montego Bay to Ocho Rios corridor had reopened and that key transportation corridors had been restored.

The National Works Agency reported that hurricane-affected roads were reopening progressively, with some sections initially limited to single-lane access while repairs continued. Close to departure, ask the airport, transport company and accommodation for the current flight, road and access position.
