From Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Negril, you can take an airport taxi, pre-booked private transfer, shared shuttle, coach, route taxi, hire car or domestic flight. The road trip covers about 80 kilometres, or 50 miles, and usually takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Published private-transfer prices accessed in October 2026 range from US$70 per booking for 1 or 2 people one way to US$220 per journey for 1 to 4 passengers.
Your first decisions are the exact Negril address, passenger and bag count, flight arrival time, and whether you want private door-to-door transport or a shared or public option.
The road from Montego Bay to Negril
The usual road route leaves Montego Bay and follows Jamaica’s western and north-western coast through Lucea and Green Island before reaching Negril. For a meal stop on the way, see where to eat in Lucea. The Jamaica Tourist Board gives an hour-and-a-half transfer estimate, while Jamaica’s National Environment and Planning Agency gives 1 hour 26 minutes to Bloody Bay Beach in Negril.

Allow extra time for traffic in Montego Bay and Lucea, roadworks, weather, flooding, stops, shared passenger pickups and the exact hotel, villa or guesthouse address. These are travel estimates, not scheduled arrival times.
If your accommodation is in the Negril area, give the complete address rather than only the name of the town. Norman Manley Boulevard, West End and Bloody Bay can involve different final driving times and drop-off points.
The route begins in St. James, passes through Hanover and ends in Westmoreland. You can compare local operators through the St. James transport operators, Hanover transport operators and Westmoreland transport operators pages.
Airport taxi from Sangster International Airport
Sangster International Airport, also known as MBJ, has an Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside the Customs exit. The airport identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two authorised airport taxi companies. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport.
After Customs clearance, follow the airport signs to the taxi desk and ask for the total fare to your exact Negril accommodation before leaving the airport. Give the desk your passenger count, luggage details and destination address. Ask whether the amount is per vehicle or per passenger, and whether it covers one way or return travel.
MBJ also lists JUTA Negril, JUTA Tours and JCAL among the transport companies serving the airport. The MBJ taxi information page provides the airport desk details.
The airport desk quotes its fare when you arrive, while private transfer companies publish their prices in advance, so compare the two on the same passenger count and drop-off address.
Pre-booked private transfers
A private transfer gives you a vehicle arranged for your arrival and a direct drop-off at your Negril accommodation. You set it up with the operator using your airline, flight number, arrival date, arrival time, passenger count, bags and full accommodation address.

MBJ lists transfer and tour operators in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall. The list includes JUTA Negril, JUTA Tours, JCAL, Jamaica Tours, Tropical Tours, Elegant Jam Tours, Island Routes, Nexus, Amstar and other companies.
Meeting arrangements vary. White Sands says its drivers meet passengers outside the airport in the waiting area where drivers wait. Other operators direct passengers to a named desk inside the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall. Use the meeting point and driver identification method supplied with your booking.
The following prices are different private services with different passenger units and inclusions. They are not one standard fare for the route.
You can compare the operator pages for White Sands Negril, Negril OneStop, Rayon Hotel, Antonio Transfer and Tour Services, Connecting Jamaica, Jamaica Mobility Transfers and Jamaica Ideal Tours.
A quoted amount may cover a whole vehicle, several passengers or only a stated number of people. Ask for the price in writing with the currency, luggage allowance, waiting time, extra-passenger charge and drop-off address.
Shared shuttles and package transfers
A shared shuttle can suit you if you prefer a lower-cost arranged service and can allow time for other passengers and hotel stops. MBJ lists Jamaica Tours, Elegant Jam Tours, Tropical Tours, Island Routes, Nexus, Amstar and other transfer operators in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall.
Before paying, ask:
- Is the service shared or private?
- Is airport pickup included?
- Where will you meet the representative?
- How many hotel stops are planned?
- Is the final drop-off at your accommodation or at a central point?
- How many bags can each passenger bring?
- Are child seats available?
- What happens if your flight arrives late?
The price may be per person, per booking or per vehicle. Keep those units separate when comparing services.
Knutsford Express coach
Knutsford Express lists both Montego Bay Airport and Negril as passenger-service locations. Its Montego Bay Airport location is Donald Sangster International Airport, and the airport counter is listed by MBJ in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall as desk 36.

Knutsford lists these location hours:
- Montego Bay Airport passenger service: 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily.
- Negril passenger service: 5:15 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.
- Negril location: next to the Eezy Ice Factory, with access across from Beaches Negril.
Use the Knutsford Express booking page for your date. The booking system may show a direct coach or a connecting itinerary. Knutsford states that some displayed trips use a connecting bus, with each bus booked separately and connection times approximate.
The current fare depends on the date, passenger category and itinerary. Contact Knutsford Express at +1 876 971 1822 if you need help with the airport-to-Negril booking.
A coach takes you to the Negril passenger location rather than directly to every hotel or villa. Arrange the final taxi or other local transport from the Negril stop if your accommodation is elsewhere.
Route taxis and rural stage carriages
Route taxis and rural stage-carriage buses are public transport options, but they are not usually a single airport-to-hotel service. You will generally leave the airport for a public-transport point in Montego Bay, travel toward Lucea, and change again for Green Island or Negril.
A Jamaican route taxi carries passengers who pay separate fares along a designated route. The Transport Authority says route taxis must have no more than ten seats, red PPV licence plates, route information on the front doors, a black-and-white checked pattern, a Transport Authority driver identification card, an electronic monitoring device and a driver badge.
The Jamaica Tourist Board also describes route taxis as vehicles displaying their route details, a TAXI marking, the checked pattern and a Transport Authority driver ID. Fares are regulated by the Transport Authority.
The Transport Authority lists route-taxi legs connecting Montego Bay with Lucea, Green Island and Negril. Fares are regulated, so ask the driver or conductor for the current fare on each leg.
This option can work when you are travelling light and have time for changes. It is less suited to a large group, several suitcases, a late-night arrival or a villa outside the main route.
Hire car from the airport
MBJ has rental counters in the Ground Transportation and Arrivals Hall. A hire car gives you control over stops and local travel after you reach Negril, but the total cost includes more than the daily vehicle rate.

Ask the rental company about:
- Vehicle price for your dates.
- Insurance, protection and deposit.
- Fuel policy.
- Additional driver charges.
- One-way rental charges.
- Return location and opening hours.
- After-hours collection or return.
- Luggage capacity.
- Roadside assistance.
- Required driving documents.
Jamaica drives on the left, and most vehicles are right-hand drive. The road from Montego Bay to Negril follows the western coastal road through Lucea and Green Island.
The Road Traffic Act 2018 treats a qualifying foreign driver’s licence as a Jamaican licence until the earliest of the foreign licence’s expiry, the visitor’s departure from Jamaica or twelve months after arrival, with proof of entry. That licence does not authorise driving passengers or goods for hire or reward.
The Jamaica Tourist Board says visitors must carry the physical licence. Its visitor information says North Americans may use a national licence for up to three months per visit, United Kingdom residents up to twelve months and Japanese visitors up to one month. Because the statutory wording and visitor categories differ, ask the Island Traffic Authority or rental company about your own licence.
Enterprise’s Sangster International Airport terms list a valid licence, a major credit card, a minimum age of 23 and a maximum age of 75. One-way rentals must be arranged in advance and may include a one-way charge. Read the driving in Jamaica information before collecting the vehicle.
Domestic flight or charter to Negril Aerodrome
Negril Aerodrome is close to the destination, and AirLink Express advertises daily scheduled flights from the Domestic Terminal at Sangster International Airport to Negril. MBJ lists International Airlink and TimAir as domestic-air-service operators serving Negril Aerodrome. Travelling on to the north coast from Negril later? See Negril to Ocho Rios across the north coast.
AirLink publishes these contact details:
- Telephone: +1 876 940 6660 or +1 876 940 0195.
- WhatsApp or call: +1 876 373 2690.
- Email: reservation@flyairlink.net.
- Address: Domestic Terminal, Sangster International Airport.
Contact AirLink for the current fare, flight duration, baggage allowance and departure time. After arriving internationally, you need to transfer to the domestic terminal and meet the operator’s check-in and baggage requirements. Arrange transport from Negril Aerodrome to your hotel or villa.
The Jamaica Tourist Board says operators holding the required licence can arrange chartered domestic service. Request a current written charter quote directly from TimAir.
For more detail on this option, read Domestic Flights in Jamaica: Flying Between Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril. If your stay is on the south coast instead, see the Montego Bay Airport to Treasure Beach routes.
What to arrange before you travel
Have these details ready when you contact a taxi desk, transfer company, coach service, rental company or airline:
- Airline and flight number.
- Arrival date and scheduled arrival time.
- Passenger count and children’s ages.
- Number, size and type of bags.
- Child-seat requirement.
- Wheelchair or mobility requirements.
- Exact hotel, villa or accommodation name and complete address.
- Quoted currency, such as USD or JMD.
- Price unit, such as per vehicle, per passenger, per trip or return.
- Private or shared service.
- Waiting time for a delayed flight.
- Airport meeting point and driver identification method.
- Payment method, deposit, balance and cancellation terms.
- Luggage limits, stops, detours and extra-passenger charges.
- Return date and pickup time, if applicable.
White Sands asks for the passenger name, airline, flight number, arrival date and number of persons. Antonio Transfer asks for the flight name, flight number, arrival time, passenger count and hotel. Connecting Jamaica asks for flight number, luggage count, pickup time, drop-off location and property address.
For children, ask: “What child-seat type is available, what ages does it suit, what is the child price, and can the vehicle carry our luggage with the seats installed?”
For a group, ask: “What exact vehicle will carry this passenger and luggage count, does the quoted amount cover the whole vehicle, and will you use one larger van or multiple vehicles?”
For a wheelchair or mobility device, ask:
- Can the vehicle carry a folded or powered wheelchair?
- Is a ramp or lift available?
- Can the passenger remain seated in the wheelchair during travel?
- What are the vehicle’s door and cargo dimensions?
- Is airport assistance available?
- Is there an equipment or special-assistance fee?
- Can the exact vehicle be confirmed in writing?
MBJ lists Ken’s Wheelchair Tours & Services among its ground-transport operators. A specific accessible vehicle and price must be arranged directly with the operator.
The current Jamaica Tourist Board travel-alert information says international and domestic airports are operational, with full operations restored at Sangster International Airport, Norman Manley International Airport and Ian Fleming International Airport. The Office of the Prime Minister reported on November 6, 2025 that all airports reopened within 48 hours of Hurricane Melissa, including domestic aerodromes such as Negril and Tinson Pen.
Road recovery work continued after the storm. On October 31, 2025, the National Works Agency reported that the Savanna-la-Mar to Montego Bay corridor had been cleared or reopened to at least single-lane access, while other roads remained affected by flooding, landslides, fallen trees and surface damage. Flight, hotel and transport schedules can still change, so confirm your booking details with each operator before travel.
Common questions
How much is a taxi from Montego Bay Airport to Negril?
MBJ identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two authorised airport taxi companies and directs passengers to their airport desk. Antonio Transfer and Tour Services lists US$80 per vehicle for 1 to 4 persons one way, while White Sands lists US$100 per vehicle for 1 to 2 adults one way, both as private-transfer prices accessed in October 2026.
Ask the JUTA or JCAL desk for the total fare to your exact accommodation before departure.
Is there a shuttle from Montego Bay to Negril?
Yes. MBJ lists Jamaica Tours, Elegant Jam Tours, Tropical Tours, Island Routes, Nexus, Amstar and other transfer companies in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall.
Ask whether the service is shared, how many stops are planned, where the vehicle will meet you and whether the price is per passenger or per booking.
How long is the transfer from Montego Bay Airport to Negril?
The road trip usually takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. NEPA gives 1 hour 26 minutes to Bloody Bay Beach, while the Jamaica Tourist Board gives an hour-and-a-half estimate.
Traffic, weather, roadworks, flooding, stops and the exact accommodation can change the arrival time.
How much is a private transfer from Montego Bay Airport to Negril?
Published October 2026 prices include US$70 per booking for 1 or 2 persons one way from Negril OneStop, US$80 per vehicle for 1 to 4 persons from Antonio Transfer and Tour Services, US$100 per vehicle for 1 to 2 adults from White Sands and US$120 for 1 to 4 persons from Jamaica Mobility Transfers.
Connecting Jamaica lists US$220 per journey for 1 to 4 passengers. Each price has different inclusions, passenger limits and payment terms.
Are airport transfers cheaper than taxis?
Sometimes, but there is no single comparison. A private transfer may cost more than a route taxi while including advance booking and direct accommodation drop-off. A per-vehicle price may work out lower for a group, while a shared shuttle or coach may cost less per person.
Compare the same destination, direction, currency, passenger count, luggage allowance and private or shared arrangement.
Is there a bus from Montego Bay to Negril?
Yes. Knutsford Express lists Montego Bay Airport and Negril passenger locations. Depending on the date, its booking system may show a direct coach or a connecting itinerary.
Route taxis and rural stage carriages also operate through route legs, generally requiring changes around Montego Bay, Lucea or Green Island.
Can you use Uber in Negril?
Uber's own Jamaica pages list Kingston, Ocho Rios and Sangster International Airport (October 2026), so open the app at your Negril pickup point to see whether a vehicle is available. Whichever way you book, the Transport Authority requires a vehicle carrying paying passengers to hold a public passenger vehicle road licence, with red PPV plates, and the driver to display a Transport Authority badge. Check both before you get in. The Uber in Jamaica guide covers the apps in more detail.
Which airport is best for Negril?
For most international visitors, Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is the practical airport because it is about 80 kilometres from Negril and has a wide range of ground-transfer services.
Negril Aerodrome may suit you when a current AirLink scheduled flight or charter fits your arrival. Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston can work when the international fare or flight schedule makes it worthwhile, but the road trip to Negril is much longer.
How do people tip drivers on this trip in Jamaica?
Tipping is discretionary. Route and shared taxi drivers generally do not expect a tip, while a private-transfer passenger may give a cash tip after the trip for luggage help, stops or attentive service.
Ask whether a gratuity is already included, and use a currency the driver accepts. Keep any tip separate from the quoted transport fare unless the operator includes it.
Once you are settled, here are the best restaurants in Negril. If you are travelling onward from Negril, the Westmoreland transport operators page can help you arrange the next part of your trip.
