From Sangster International Airport to Kingston, you can travel by scheduled coach, domestic flight, private transfer, authorised airport taxi, route taxi connections or hire car. A road transfer is commonly estimated at about 3 to 3½ hours, with Montego Bay to Kingston often quoted at around 175 km. Published examples range from J$2,000 per passenger on the JUTC Rural Express launch fare to US$325 per vehicle for a one-way private transfer for 1 to 4 people. The right choice depends on your arrival time, final Kingston address, luggage, passenger count and how much flexibility you need. Still choosing where to land? See choosing between the Montego Bay and Kingston airports.
Start with your actual Kingston destination
Kingston can mean New Kingston, downtown Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, Norman Manley International Airport or an address farther east or west. Give the full hotel, residence, office, street or airport address when you request a fare. A coach may finish at New Kingston or Half-Way Tree, while a domestic flight arrives at Tinson Pen Aerodrome. Neither is the same as door-to-door transport to your final address. Heading west later? See Kingston Airport to Negril, the long way west.
If you are arriving from overseas, have your airline and flight number, scheduled arrival time, number of passengers, children’s ages, luggage details and preferred travel date ready. A business traveller with a meeting time may value a pre-arranged vehicle or flight more than the lowest published fare. A family may prefer a coach with a stated luggage allowance, while a group may find a per-vehicle transfer easier to price.
Sangster International Airport is in St. James. If you need a local operator for the first part of your trip, see the St. James transport operators. Travellers continuing along the north coast may also pass through Trelawny and St. Ann, where you can find Trelawny transport operators and St. Ann transport operators.
Scheduled coach from the airport
Knutsford Express has a Montego Bay Airport terminal beside Sangster International Airport. MBJ lists a Knutsford Express desk in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall at desk 36. After Customs, follow the airport signs or ask the airport information desk for the Knutsford desk and terminal.

The Kingston arrival point is Knutsford’s New Kingston office. The standard service is office to office, so arrange a separate taxi or transfer from New Kingston if you are going to a hotel, residence, office, Portmore, Spanish Town or Norman Manley International Airport.
Knutsford lists one-way fares and allows payment through its website or at an office by cash or card. Enter your travel date and passenger category when booking to see the applicable fare. Its standard luggage allowance is one checked bag up to 50 lb and one carry-on. Ask about any extra luggage before paying if you have sports equipment, several large bags or unusual items.
Knutsford gives children aged 2 to 12 discounted fares with a seat and the regular luggage allowance. Children under 2 may travel free on an adult’s lap under its stated child-fare policy. If your flight may arrive close to departure time, include Customs, baggage collection and the walk to the airport terminal when choosing a coach departure.
For information about other routes and booking rules, see Knutsford Express in Jamaica: Routes, Schedules, Fares and Booking. If you need a taxi after arriving in New Kingston, the Kingston transport operators can help you continue to the final address. If you arrive hungry, see where to eat in New Kingston and Half Way Tree.
JUTC Rural Express
Jamaica Urban Transit Company launched Rural Express connections between Montego Bay and Kingston. Its launch information gave an introductory fare of J$2,000 per passenger per trip for the long-distance service, including Montego Bay to Kingston. That launch fare dates from 2025, so ask JUTC for the current fare before you travel.
The launch material identifies Half-Way Tree Transport Centre as the principal Kingston hub. At Sangster International Airport, ask JUTC or the airport information desk for the current Montego Bay departure point and the transport needed from the airport to that stop. The departure may involve the Montego Bay Transport Centre, a JUTC depot or another current pickup location.
This option may suit a local commuter or visitor who is comfortable travelling between transport centres and arranging the final connection separately. Rural Express is different from Knutsford Express, so keep the two services and their fares separate when comparing them. The JUTC launch fare is per passenger and per trip, not a private vehicle price.
The JUTC buses, routes and Montego Bay service guide gives more context for public transport between Kingston and Montego Bay.
Domestic flight to Tinson Pen
MBJ lists Timair and International Airlink as domestic carriers serving Tinson Pen Aerodrome in Kingston from Sangster International Airport. Request the fare, operating days, departure time, baggage allowance, aircraft type, check-in time and arrival details directly from the carrier.

Tinson Pen Aerodrome is a domestic aerodrome in Kingston. It is not Norman Manley International Airport. If you are meeting someone at Norman Manley International Airport or continuing to a Kingston address, arrange a taxi or transfer from Tinson Pen after landing.
A flight can reduce road time, but your total airport time includes check-in, baggage handling, boarding and the ground transfer at the Kingston end. Give the carrier your passenger count and luggage details before paying, especially if you have large bags, mobility equipment or a tight connection.
For related domestic routes, see Domestic Flights in Jamaica: Flying Between Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril.
Private transfer or authorised airport taxi
MBJ identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two authorised airport taxi companies at Sangster International Airport. If you land hungry before the long trip, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport. Their shared airport taxi desk is just outside the Customs exit. MBJ also lists transfer operators in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall, including operators that arrange private vehicles for airport-to-city trips.
Request the total price for your exact destination before leaving the airport. State whether the trip is one way or return, whether the price is per vehicle or per person, and whether tolls, parking, waiting time, taxes, luggage, child seats and extra stops are included.
Published private-transfer examples, as of October 2026, include:
Jamaica Getaway Travels says its quoted prices cover 1 to 15 people and requests the airline, flight number and arrival time.
These are separate private-transfer prices, not a single airport taxi tariff. For a JUTA or JCAL taxi, ask the airport taxi desk for the complete fare in the published currency before entering the vehicle. Give the desk your final address, passenger count and luggage details.
If your flight is late, ask how the operator handles waiting time and whether an additional charge applies. Ask where the driver will meet you, what identification process is used, how much luggage the vehicle can hold, the vehicle type and the payment method. The Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica guide explains the difference between these arrangements.
Hire car and the road options
MBJ lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Island, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty among its airport rental companies. Request a written quote for your travel dates and vehicle class. Include the rental price, insurance or protection, deposit, taxes, fuel, one-way return fees, tolls and extras.

Enterprise states that its Montego Bay airport location requires CDW-TP protection unless the renter provides qualifying proof of coverage or a US$2,500 deposit or credit-card authorisation, in addition to the rental cost. Requirements vary by company, so read the rental terms for the company and vehicle you select.
Children under 3 must travel in infant carriers under Visit Jamaica’s stated road-transport guidance. Danjor Cars states that child seats may be available for US$5 per day with advance reservation. Ask the rental company or transfer operator what seat type is available for each child’s age, weight and height, whether it is installed before pickup and whether it fits with the adults and luggage.
For driving requirements and local road rules, see Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules.
North coast and North-South Highway
One road pattern runs east from Sangster International Airport past Montego Bay, then along the A1 or North Coast Highway towards Falmouth, Ocho Rios and Mammee Bay. From Ocho Rios, the driver can use the North-South Highway towards Caymanas and continue into the Kingston area.
For a Class 1 car between Ocho Rios and Caymanas, the Toll Authority's table dated August 3, 2026 lists J$2,500 one way, while the NROCC schedule effective August 28, 2026 lists J$1,900, so carry enough for the higher figure. Class 1 applies to a vehicle below 1.70 metres in height. The vehicle class matters, so include the vehicle height when calculating tolls for a rental or private vehicle.
This route may pass through St. James, Trelawny and St. Ann before reaching St. Catherine and Kingston. The exact road distance depends on the Kingston destination and the route selected. Allow time for traffic, road works, weather, fuel, stops and the final address. For meal stops on the way, see where to eat in Jamaica on a road trip.
Read Jamaica Highway Tolls: Highway 2000 and North-South Highway Rates before choosing a toll-road route.
South through Mandeville and Highway 2000
A second road pattern runs through the interior and south coast corridor towards Santa Cruz, Mandeville, Williamsfield, May Pen and Kingston. The TransJamaican Highway East-West corridor includes the May Pen to Williamsfield section, which began operations on December 27, 2025.
TransJam publishes separate charges by toll plaza, vehicle class and T-Tag status. The trip is not one single Montego Bay to Kingston toll crossing. Your total depends on the entry and exit points, the plazas used and the vehicle class.
Published Class 1 examples for the May Pen to Williamsfield section are:
TransJam’s current toll schedule is effective August 1, 2026. Calculate the exact total using the current plaza, vehicle class and T-Tag information before paying.
Traditional public roads remain available and do not attract tolls. Drive time varies with the route, road conditions and final Kingston address. Ask the driver or rental company for the planned route and estimated arrival time before departure.
Route taxis with changes
The Transport Authority lists Airport to Montego Bay as a route-taxi connection and Montego Bay to Kingston as a rural stage carriage route. Since July 1, 2026, route-taxi fares are set at a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre and rural bus fares at a J$53 base plus J$7.02 per kilometre, per passenger, so ask for the fare on each leg before you board.
To use route taxis, travel from the airport into the Montego Bay transport area, then change vehicles for the Kingston connection. Each vehicle and route is a separate fare. Route taxis operate on designated routes and do not provide ordinary door-to-door service.
This arrangement may suit a passenger who is travelling light and already understands the transport centres involved. It requires more changes than a scheduled airport coach or private vehicle, and the final Kingston address will usually need another local taxi or bus.
For local transport arrangements, read How to Get Around Montego Bay, Jamaica: Taxis, Buses and Route Taxis and Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them.

- Passenger count and passenger categories.
- Checked bags, carry-ons and unusual luggage.
- Children’s ages and required child seats.
- Exact Kingston hotel, residence, office, airport or street address.
- One-way or return travel.

- Cancellation and amendment terms.
- Expected travel time and planned stops.
- Vehicle type and capacity.

For a family, ask the exact child-seat type, age range, weight range, installation arrangement and separate cost. For a group, ask how many seats remain after luggage is loaded. For a wheelchair user, ask about ramp or lift dimensions, door width, step height, whether the wheelchair folds, where it will be stored and whether the traveller remains in the wheelchair during travel.
Whichever option you choose, confirm the details with the operator before you travel.
Current airport and road status
As of October 15, 2026, Sangster International Airport is operating as a passenger airport. MBJ lists live arrivals and departures, domestic airlines, car rentals, airport taxis and transfer operators. Flight status remains specific to the airline and travel date.
Sangster International Airport closed on October 26, 2025 during Hurricane Melissa, and MBJ announced preparations for limited commercial operations from November 1, 2025. Norman Manley International Airport also closed ahead of the storm. The Airports Authority announced reopening for relief flights on October 29, 2025, with commercial operations resuming afterward.
Roads were affected by landslides, fallen trees, flooding and scoured surfaces after the storm. The National Works Agency reported reopened corridors, including sections between Kingston, Black River, Savanna-la-Mar and Montego Bay, while some roads continued under works or restrictions. Toll collection resumed on November 10, 2025, and the May Pen to Williamsfield TransJam section began operations on December 27, 2025.
Check your airline, coach, transport operator and road status on the travel date.
Common questions
How long is the drive from Montego Bay Airport to Kingston?
A private transfer operator publishes about 3 hours 30 minutes from Montego Bay Airport to Kingston, while another advertises approximately 3 hours for Montego Bay to Kingston. Yes. Knutsford Express operates from its Montego Bay Airport terminal beside Sangster International Airport to its New Kingston office. JUTC also operates Rural Express connections between Montego Bay and Kingston, with a launch fare of J$2,000 per passenger per trip published in 2025. Arrange onward transport from New Kingston or the Kingston hub if your final address is elsewhere.
Can you fly from Montego Bay to Kingston?
Yes. MBJ lists Timair and International Airlink for domestic service from Sangster International Airport to Tinson Pen Aerodrome. Tinson Pen is not Norman Manley International Airport, so arrange ground transport if you need the international airport or another Kingston address.
How much is a taxi from Montego Bay Airport to Kingston?
MBJ identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two authorised airport taxi companies at Sangster International Airport. Published private-transfer examples include Jaital at US$325 per vehicle, per way, for 1 to 4 people, Reggae Tours from US$374.50 for 2 people one way, and Jamaica Getaway Travels at US$400 one way for 1 to 4 people.
