Getting Around Ocho Rios, Jamaica: Taxis, Route Taxis and Walking

A green hillside town above a curved bay with a ship-free blue sea at midday

You can get around Ocho Rios by walking in the town centre, taking a route taxi along its licensed route, arranging a private charter for one party, using Uber where a vehicle is available, or hiring an operator for an airport transfer or attraction stop. A route taxi fare is charged per passenger, while a private taxi quote is usually arranged for the vehicle and trip. Dunn’s River Falls is about 5 to 20 minutes by road from the Ocho Rios cruise port depending on traffic, so treat it as a separate trip rather than a town-centre walk.

Choose transport by the trip you need to make

Ocho Rios works best when you match the transport type to the route, time available and number of people travelling.

Route taxis gather at stands and along marked routes in the town centre.

Route taxis carry separate passengers along designated routes. They can stop to collect or drop off passengers along the licensed route, and the Transport Authority says route taxis have ten seats or fewer. You normally arrange one at a transport stand or flag down a marked vehicle travelling on its route.

A charter or private taxi carries one party for an agreed trip or hire period. This suits a hotel-to-attraction transfer, a return trip with waiting time, several stops, or a family that wants the same vehicle throughout the outing. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance distinguishes private charter taxis from route taxis.

Walking works for much of the town centre, the cruise-port area, nearby shopping areas and some beaches. It becomes a different proposition when you are carrying luggage, travelling with children, using a wheelchair or heading beyond the centre.

For local route transport, the Transport Authority lists taxi associations in Ocho Rios, including St Ann Taxi Association, Mylex Taxi Association and Great Pond Taxi Association. The listed addresses are:

The Ocho Rios transportation centre or bus park is used as a local departure point for buses and route taxis. Ask for the destination, the correct loading point, the fare per person and whether the vehicle is a route taxi or a private charter before boarding.

Route taxis and published fares

From July 1, 2026, the regulated route-taxi rate is J$132 base fare plus J$8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, one way. Route-specific fares are rounded. The Ministry lists St. Ann's Bay to Ocho Rios at J$240 per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026, and Ocho Rios to Kingston by rural stage carriage (rural bus) at J$660. For any other route ending in Ocho Rios, ask the driver or conductor for the fare before boarding. See Jamaica taxi fares in 2026 for the full rates.

Children, students in uniform, physically disabled passengers and senior citizens pay half the quoted route-taxi fare. These regulated route fares are separate from a private charter quote. They also do not set the price for waiting at Dunn’s River Falls, travelling with luggage, making attraction stops or arranging a return vehicle.

For routes starting in nearby St. Ann communities and ending in Ocho Rios, the St. Ann transport operators and parish directory can help you identify transport services for the wider area.

Before boarding, look for the features listed by the Transport Authority:

Before you board a route taxi

Plate and doors

A red PPV licence plate, “Route Taxi” written on the doors and the licensed route printed on the outside of the front doors.

Roof and pattern

A globe marked “Taxi” on top of the vehicle and a black-and-white checked pattern.

Identification

A Transport Authority Driver Identification Card inside the vehicle and a driver wearing a Transport Authority identification badge.

Driver

A PPV driver’s licence and a driver uniform.

Monitoring

An electronic monitoring device.

The Transport Authority also says fares, mileage and charges must be printed on the outside of the front doors for the relevant vehicle category. Stage carriages must display their origin and destination at the front and rear.

Private taxis for attractions and return trips

A private charter makes more sense when the destination is an attraction rather than a route stop, or when you want the vehicle to wait and bring you back. You arrange the trip directly with the taxi association, hotel, attraction, airport desk or transport operator.

Attractions like the falls sit outside the town centre and suit a private charter.

For Dunn’s River Falls, Mystic Mountain, Blue Hole and local beaches, ask for a dated quote that names:

  • The exact pickup and drop-off points.
  • The attraction or beach.
  • Jamaican dollars or another currency.
  • The total price.
  • Whether the quote is per passenger or per vehicle.
  • Whether it is one way or return.
  • How much waiting time is included.
  • Whether luggage, tolls, parking and extra stops are included.
  • Whether attraction entrance fees are separate.

Visit Jamaica describes Dunn’s River Falls as approximately a five-minute drive from the Ocho Rios cruise port. That is an estimated travel time, not a taxi price. The attraction entrance fee is separate from transport. On November 12, 2025, the Urban Development Corporation published Jamaican resident admission rates of J$1,000 for adults and J$500 for children aged four to twelve with valid Jamaican identification. If you plan to eat near the falls, see where to eat near Dunn’s River Falls.

A return charter is worth arranging when you have a fixed cruise schedule, children who may tire after an attraction visit, luggage at the hotel, or a group that wants to finish at the same location. Ask the operator to state whether the driver waits during the visit or returns at a specified time.

Walking from the cruise port and town centre

Walking is practical for many short trips around central Ocho Rios. The cruise-port area, town centre, nearby shopping areas and some beaches can be reached on foot depending on your exact starting point. For a meal in town, here is where to eat in Ocho Rios beyond the cruise port. For the pier itself, see Ocho Rios cruise port taxis and getting around from the pier.

Dunn’s River Falls is outside the centre. Visit Jamaica places the attraction opposite Dunn’s River Craft Market and describes it as about a five-minute drive from the cruise port. Walking there is physically possible in the broad sense, but it involves the main road toward the attraction rather than a simple town-centre stroll.

Decide from your actual starting point. A hotel on the edge of town, a cruise terminal, a family carrying beach items, hot weather, rain, luggage or limited mobility can all change what is practical. Ask about the current pedestrian entrance and road conditions before setting out.

Uber and app-based rides in Ocho Rios

Uber lists Ocho Rios as a Jamaican service city and has a dedicated page for local rides. You can enter your pickup point and destination in the app to see the available service and an estimated price.

Check the app at your exact pickup point to see whether a vehicle is available.

Uber also has a page for Ian Fleming International Airport, stating that riders can request a local taxi through the app for trips to or from the airport. Availability can vary by pickup point and time, and vehicle size or accessibility features may not be available for every request.

Use the app to check whether a vehicle is currently available at your hotel, the cruise port, Ian Fleming International Airport or an attraction. Before you get in, check for red PPV plates and the driver’s Transport Authority badge, which the Authority requires on any vehicle carrying paying passengers.

Airport transfers to Ocho Rios

You can reach Ocho Rios from Sangster International Airport, Ian Fleming International Airport or Norman Manley International Airport by arranging a private transfer, taxi, rental car or scheduled coach where the route fits.

For an airport pickup, give the operator:

  • Your flight number and arrival time.
  • The airport and terminal.
  • Your hotel, villa or street address in Ocho Rios.
  • The number of passengers.
  • The number and size of luggage items.
  • Children’s ages and any child-seat or booster-seat requirements.
  • Your preferred meeting point.
  • The total fare and currency.
  • Whether the fare is per vehicle, one way or return.
  • Whether waiting time is included.
  • What happens if the flight is late.
  • The payment method, deposit, balance and cancellation terms.

Juta Tours publishes airport arrival meet-and-greet after customs, child seats and booster seats on request, and drivers it describes as trained by TPDCo. Those are the operator’s published service details. Ask about the exact vehicle, luggage capacity, waiting terms and price for your booking.

For the choice between a taxi and a pre-arranged transfer, see Airport Transfer or Taxi in Jamaica: Which One Fits Your Trip. For a rental car, read Renting a Car in Jamaica: Requirements, Costs and Airport Pickup.

Families, groups and mobility needs

Families should request the number of seats needed for every passenger and ask whether a child seat or booster seat is available for each child’s age and size. Juta Tours publishes child seats and booster seats on request.

Ask for the vehicle's real passenger and luggage capacity before you book.

For groups, ask for the vehicle’s actual passenger capacity and luggage capacity. A larger vehicle may be needed even when the number of passengers fits the advertised seat count, especially when several people have large suitcases, sports equipment or other bulky items.

Travellers using wheelchairs or with limited mobility can ask:

  • Is the vehicle wheelchair accessible?
  • Is there a ramp or lift?
  • Can the passenger remain in the wheelchair during travel?
  • What are the maximum wheelchair dimensions and weight?
  • Can the vehicle carry other passengers and luggage?
  • Is the pickup point level and accessible?
  • Can the driver assist with boarding?
  • Is the attraction accessible?

Jamaica Wheelchair Taxi, identified as Karandas Tours Ltd., publishes wheelchair-accessible excursions and airport transfers from Ocho Rios. Its published vehicle information includes an eight-seat van for one wheelchair passenger, a ten-seat van for two wheelchair passengers and an eighteen-seat bus for three wheelchair passengers. Ask the operator to confirm the vehicle dimensions, boarding method and luggage space for your specific booking.

Hurricane Melissa recovery information

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on October 28, 2025. The dated recovery position includes these milestones:

  • On October 25, 2025, the Airports Authority of Jamaica said Sangster International Airport, Ian Fleming International Airport and Norman Manley International Airport were open at that time, while airport decisions could change.
  • MBJ Airports Limited reported limited commercial flight operations at Sangster International Airport after the hurricane and said humanitarian and relief flights began on October 30, 2025.
  • On November 2, 2025, MBJ Airports Limited said limited commercial operations were underway and seven gates remained closed for repairs.
  • On November 6, 2025, the Jamaica Information Service reported that access had been restored along key transportation corridors, including the connection from Ocho Rios to Port Antonio.
  • The National Works Agency published post-hurricane road activity and status information for affected roads, including roads in St. Ann, on December 11, 2025.
  • On December 2, 2025, the Jamaica Information Service reported that the aviation sector had processed more than 3,000 flights during the recovery period from October 29 to December 2.
  • The Jamaica Tourist Board’s November 19, 2025 hurricane FAQ described Ocho Rios as one of Jamaica’s affected tourism areas.

Conditions on a particular road or at a particular attraction can still change, so check the airport, airline, National Works Agency, port and attraction notices shortly before setting out.

Common questions

How much is a taxi in Ocho Rios?

A route taxi fare depends on the licensed route and is charged per passenger. From July 1, 2026, the rate is J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre, one way, and the Ministry lists St. Ann's Bay to Ocho Rios at J$240 per passenger. For any other route, ask the driver for the fare before boarding. A private charter requires a separate quote for the exact trip, vehicle, waiting time and direction.

Is there Uber in Ocho Rios?

Yes. Uber lists Ocho Rios as a service city and allows riders to request a ride through the app when a vehicle is available. Ian Fleming International Airport also has an Uber pickup page for local taxi requests to or from the airport, but service, vehicle size and accessibility can vary by time and location.

Can you walk to Dunn’s River Falls from Ocho Rios?

You can walk in the broad physical sense, but Dunn’s River Falls is outside the town centre and the route follows the main road toward the attraction. Visit Jamaica describes it as about a five-minute drive from the Ocho Rios cruise port, so a taxi or arranged transfer may suit families, cruise passengers, luggage and travellers with limited mobility.

How do you get around Ocho Rios?

Walk around the town centre, cruise-port area and nearby beaches when the distance suits you. Use a route taxi for a licensed route, a private charter for a direct or return attraction trip, Uber where a vehicle is available, or an arranged operator for airport transfers, child seats, wheelchair access, larger groups and waiting time.

For the exact fare, pickup point and vehicle details, contact the transport centre, taxi association or operator before paying, and state the route, date, passenger count, luggage and return plan.

To find transport operators where you are travelling next, start from the parish directory.
