Montego Bay Airport to Your Hotel: Getting to the Hip Strip, Rose Hall and Ironshore, Jamaica

A palm-fringed Montego Bay beach with calm turquoise water at midday

From Sangster International Airport, you can reach the Hip Strip in about 10 to 20 minutes, Ironshore in about 10 to 20 minutes, and Rose Hall in about 20 to 30 minutes by vehicle. Options include the authorised JUTA or JCAL airport taxi, a hotel shuttle, a pre-booked private transfer, a public route taxi or bus arranged from a permitted pickup point, and a rental car. Published private-transfer examples range from US$15 to US$40 one way for selected hotels and passenger groups, while the current airport taxi price is given at the airport desk.

Your exact hotel entrance, arrival flight, passengers, bags, vehicle size, meeting point, price and currency all affect the right choice. Immigration, baggage collection, hotel access roads, congestion and weather can extend the driving time.

How far the main hotel areas are from Sangster International Airport

The Hip Strip, along Gloucester Avenue or Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, is roughly 3 to 5 km from the airport. A vehicle trip commonly takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the hotel and traffic. For a meal near your stay, see restaurants on the Hip Strip.

The main hotel areas lie a short drive from the airport, though resort entrances differ.

Ironshore is approximately 7 to 8 km by road. Allow about 10 to 20 minutes by vehicle.

Rose Hall is east of Montego Bay Airport, approximately 15 to 20 km away. The estimated drive is about 20 to 30 minutes, although resorts are spread across the area and their entrances differ. Iberostar Rose Hall Suites publishes an airport transfer estimate of about 20 minutes.

These are driving estimates, not timetable commitments. Give the operator the full hotel name and resort entrance, especially when several properties share the Rose Hall name.

The main ways to reach your hotel

The airport’s Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall is outside Customs. It includes hotel lounges, taxi services, rental agencies and transfer operators.

Authorised airport taxi

MBJ identifies JUTA and JCAL as the two authorised airport taxi companies. Their shared desk is just outside the Customs exit. You can give the desk attendant your hotel name and ask for the total airport taxi fare before entering the vehicle. If you land hungry, here is where to eat near Sangster International Airport.

Route taxis work differently. Since July 1, 2026 the Transport Authority has set route-taxi fares at a J$132 base plus J$8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, so a short hop from the airport road into town costs a few hundred Jamaican dollars; ask the driver for the fare before you board. That is a shared-seat fare, not the price of a private airport taxi to your hotel.

For more detail on route taxis, see Route Taxis in Jamaica: How They Work and How to Use Them. For the wider local transport picture, Getting Around Montego Bay, Jamaica: Taxis, Buses and Route Taxis covers town services.

Hotel shuttle

Hotels and resorts may provide a complimentary shuttle, a shared transfer, or a paid private service. MBJ lists hotel lounges for properties including Couples, Half Moon, Sandals and Hyatt in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall.

The arrangement depends on your reservation and hotel. An Iberostar document describes a free transfer to and from MBJ for eligible guests, with one transfer service per room and coordinated pickup arrangements.

Ask the hotel whether you qualify, where to meet the shuttle, whether the service is shared, and whether child seats, mobility equipment, luggage and late-flight handling are included.

Pre-booked private transfer

A private transfer lets you arrange the hotel drop-off before flying. MBJ’s operator list includes Best Jamaica, Reggae Tours, Tropical Tours, Island Routes, TAGJAMAICA and other providers.

Private transfer desks are in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall outside Customs.

Examples of airport desk locations include Juta Tours at Desk 1, JCAL at Desk 3, Best Jamaica at Desk 4, Reggae Tours at Desk 18 and Knutsford Express at Desk 36. Desk numbers can change, so use the meeting point given with your booking.

Best Jamaica publishes vehicle guidance based on passenger and luggage numbers. Its examples include a Mercedes-Benz for 1 to 2 passengers, a Toyota Noah for 1 to 3, a Toyota Hiace van for 4 to 9, and a Coaster bus for 10 to 28. Golf bags, strollers and wheelchairs need to be disclosed when arranging the vehicle.

Reggae Tours publishes a private non-stop service, flight monitoring and child-seat arrangements. Its airport meeting point is Desk 18.

A private transfer suits travellers who want the hotel name, vehicle and price arranged before arrival. It can also suit families, groups and passengers carrying equipment that needs more space.

Route taxi or public bus

A route taxi is different from a private airport taxi. Route taxis operate on established roads and fares under the Transport Authority. You need a permitted pickup location outside the terminal or at a designated route-taxi point.

Ask the MBJ information desk for the current permitted pickup location, route and fare. Do not assume that walking out from the terminal gives you access to a route taxi.

JUTC runs express routes between towns and cities, including Kingston and Montego Bay. Privately operated coaster buses use town stops and bus parks. For a public service from the airport to the Hip Strip, ask MBJ or the Transport Authority for the current operating route and boarding point.

A public bus or route taxi may suit a local commuter travelling light, but it needs more planning when you have several bags, children, a wheelchair or a hotel located beyond the main road.

Rental car

MBJ lists rental agencies including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Island, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty. Counters are located in the Ground Transportation and Arrivals Hall after Customs.

Before collecting the car, give the agency your arrival date, flight number, driver details and desired vehicle size. Ask about the deposit, insurance terms, fuel policy, child seats, additional drivers, tolls, payment method and the exact pickup and return location.

If you are considering a rental, see Renting a Car in Jamaica: Requirements, Costs and Airport Pickup and Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules.

Published private-transfer prices

The figures below are operator-published examples. They are not a JUTA or JCAL airport-taxi tariff, and each has its own passenger limits, inclusions and booking terms.

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Operator and route Published price Unit and direction
True Vibes Tours, MBJ to Hip Strip US$25 or US$40 Private transfer, one way or round trip
True Vibes Tours, MBJ to Rose Hall US$40 or US$50 Private transfer, one way or round trip
TAGJAMAICA, selected Montego Bay hotels US$17 for 1 to 3 travellers, US$23 for 4 to 6 Total price for the private vehicle, one way
MBJ Airport Shuttle, Hip Strip hotels US$15 for 1 to 4 passengers One way; larger-group prices listed separately
MBJ Airport Shuttle, Rose Hall hotels US$30 for 1 to 4 passengers One way; round trip is listed as twice the one-way price
Island Pride Tours, Rose Hall hotels US$35 or US$65 Standard private-transfer category, one way or round trip

The prices above are operator examples as accessed in October 2026. Ask for the current total in the published currency, whether the price is per vehicle or per person, and whether luggage, tolls, taxes, waiting, stops and hotel drop-off are included.

TAGJAMAICA states that its 1 to 3 and 4 to 6 traveller prices are totals for the private vehicle. Groups of 7 or more are priced per person. MBJ Airport Shuttle lists child seats on request. Island Pride Tours states that prices are in US dollars, with passenger categories applying to its table. If you are staying in Rose Hall, here is where to eat near Rose Hall.

What to arrange before you travel

Send the operator or hotel these details:

  • Flight number and arrival date.
  • Number of passengers.
  • Number and type of bags.
  • Any stroller, golf bag, wheelchair or other mobility equipment.
  • Children’s ages and child-seat requirements.
  • Exact hotel name, resort entrance or private address.
  • Desired vehicle type.
  • Total price and currency.
  • Whether the fare is per vehicle or per person.
  • One-way or return direction.
  • Waiting time and flight-delay policy.
  • Airport meeting point and desk number.
  • Payment method, deposit, cancellation terms and possible card fees.
  • Whether luggage, tolls, taxes, stops and hotel drop-off are included.

Ask the exact question that matches your needs. For example: “Can this vehicle carry four adults, two children, four suitcases, one stroller and two golf bags?” If you use a wheelchair, ask whether the passenger remains seated in the chair during travel, whether the vehicle has a hydraulic lift or ramp, and whether the chair dimensions fit.

Jamaica Villa Transportation publishes an accessible van that carries five passengers in addition to the wheelchair passenger and luggage, using a portable ramp. It lists child or infant seats at US$10 per seat per day.

Reggae Tours publishes a wheelchair-accessible van with a hydraulic lift for one wheelchair passenger and up to 10 passengers. Its listed Montego Bay and Rose Hall starting price is US$90, excluding 7% fees, and gratuity is not included.

Best Jamaica says child and infant seats are provided at no extra charge on private airport transfers, subject to booking details and the children’s ages. Reggae Tours says child seats are free subject to availability and must be requested with the child’s age.

Current airport and road position

As of October 15, 2026, Sangster International Airport has returned to normal operations after the disruption caused by Hurricane Melissa. The airport closed on October 26, 2025, accepted relief flights from October 30, and resumed limited commercial flights on November 1. The Jamaica Information Service reported on December 13, 2025, that Sangster International Airport and the country’s other Airports Authority airports had returned to normal operations.

The National Works Agency reported on October 31, 2025, that the road from Savanna-la-Mar to Montego Bay had reopened in sections while work continued on other corridors. Its post-hurricane updates recorded continuing road impacts in St. James and elsewhere.

MBJ currently lists operating flights, ground transportation, taxis, hotel shuttles, transfer operators and rental cars. Ask the airport, hotel or transport operator about the road position close to your arrival if weather or road notices affect your plans.

Common questions

How much is a taxi from Montego Bay Airport to the Hip Strip?

MBJ directs passengers to the shared JUTA and JCAL Authorised Airport Taxi desk just outside Customs, where you can request the current total fare to your hotel. True Vibes Tours publishes US$25 one way or US$40 round trip for a private transfer from Montego Bay Airport to the Hip Strip. MBJ Airport Shuttle lists US$15 one way for 1 to 4 passengers to Hip Strip hotels.

How far is Rose Hall from Montego Bay Airport?

Rose Hall is roughly 15 to 20 km east of Sangster International Airport. The drive usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, while Iberostar Rose Hall Suites publishes an estimate of about 20 minutes.

Do Montego Bay hotels offer airport shuttles?

Yes, some hotels and resorts arrange airport shuttles through their own transport desks or contracted providers. MBJ lists hotel lounges in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall, while shuttle eligibility, timing, cost and shared or private service depend on your hotel reservation.

Can you walk from Montego Bay Airport to a hotel?

Some Hip Strip hotels are close; Hotel 39 gives its distance from Sangster International Airport as about 2.7 km. With luggage, a short taxi ride is easier, and Rose Hall is too far to walk. Ask MBJ or your hotel about a safe walking route if you prefer to go on foot.

Is there a bus from Montego Bay airport into town?

JUTC and private coaster buses serve designated depots, bus parks and stops. Ask the MBJ information desk for the current boarding point, route and fare before leaving the terminal.

How do people tip drivers on this kind of trip in Jamaica?

Tipping is discretionary. Route or shared-taxi drivers do not generally expect a tip, while private-transfer passengers may choose an amount based on luggage help, waiting, child-seat assistance, accessibility support and the agreed service. Ask whether gratuity is included and keep small cash in the currency accepted by the driver.
