You can travel from Negril to Kingston by scheduled Knutsford Express coach, connecting route taxis and rural buses, domestic flight, private vehicle or rental car. A direct road trip covers roughly 220 to 250 kilometres and takes about four to five hours, depending on traffic, stops, weather, roadworks and your final Kingston address. The full price depends on the service: Knutsford Express and flights use date-specific fares, public transport is paid by stage, and private vehicles or rental cars are quoted separately in JMD or another stated currency.
Your first decision is how much time, luggage and changing you can manage. Reaching Norman Manley International Airport for a flight requires a larger time buffer than travelling to a Kingston address, and New Kingston, downtown Kingston, Half-Way-Tree, Harbour View and the airport are different final destinations.
The main ways to travel from Negril to Kingston
Scheduled coach with Knutsford Express
Knutsford Express operates scheduled passenger service between Negril and Kingston. Its Negril office is next to Eezy Ice Factory, across from Beaches Negril. The Kingston location is in New Kingston.

This is an office-to-office service, not a hotel-to-hotel transfer. You arrange your own transport to the Negril office, then arrange your onward transport from the Kingston location if your final destination is elsewhere. Before you leave Negril, here is where to get breakfast in Negril.
The current departure time and fare depend on your travel date. Check the selected date in the Knutsford Express booking system or contact the company through its locations and contact information.
Knutsford Express states that its fares are one way. The standard luggage allowance includes one checked piece up to 50 pounds and one carry-on. Extra luggage attracts a separate fee. Payment can be made online or at an office by cash or card.
The company accepts adult, child, senior and student passenger categories in its booking system. For a family, ask whether a child seat can be supplied, whether a child may sit on an adult's lap, how a stroller is handled and whether the available luggage space suits your bags.
For a group, ask for the vehicle's actual passenger capacity and luggage capacity. Also ask whether the quoted price is per passenger or per vehicle and whether the group will travel together.
Route taxis and rural stage buses
Route taxis and rural stage buses can take you east in separate stages. A common plan involves Negril to Savanna-la-Mar, then another vehicle toward Mandeville, May Pen or another transport hub, followed by a Kingston-area connection.
This is a series of local fares, not one through ticket. You pay each stage separately and allow time to leave one vehicle, locate the next service and continue from the transport centre.
From July 1, 2026, the regulated route-taxi rate is J$132 base fare plus J$8.64 per kilometre, per passenger, one way, and the rural stage carriage (rural bus) rate is J$53 base fare plus J$7.02 per kilometre. Route-specific fares are rounded. Ask the driver or conductor for the fare on each stage before boarding. You can read more about Jamaica taxi fares in 2026 before setting out.
Rural-stage fares are also published by individual stage. Your total depends on the stages used, the number of changes and the current fare for each connection. Ask the transport centre for the next vehicle, its destination and the fare before boarding.
JUTC is useful once you are in Kingston and the surrounding area. Its Rural Express route 520Ex also connects Half-Way Tree with Negril under a 2026 Friday-through-Monday operating notice, so ask JUTC for the current timetable and fare. The Kingston Airport to Negril guide covers that route in more detail.
Domestic flight
Airlink Express lists booking points for Negril, Norman Manley International Airport and Tinson Pen. TimAir is also listed by Jamaica's tourism and airport authorities as a domestic operator serving Jamaica's aerodromes.
A flight can reduce time on the road, but the total plan includes travel to the aerodrome, check-in, luggage arrangements and transport from the Kingston airport or Tinson Pen to your final address. Airlink states that availability and takeoff times can change, so arrange the selected date, passenger count, aerodrome and aircraft directly with the carrier through its booking information.
For domestic flights, give the carrier the number of adults, children and infants, along with the number, size and weight of your bags. Ask about child seating, stroller handling, wheelchair boarding and the accepted dimensions and weight of any mobility equipment.
The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority's 2026 charges for Sangster International Airport list a domestic passenger service charge of US$6.03 and a security charge of US$2.65. These are airport charges, not the complete price of your airfare.
More information is available in Domestic Flights in Jamaica: Flying Between Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril.
Private vehicle or transfer
A private vehicle can take you from a Negril hotel, villa or other address to a Kingston address or airport terminal without the stage changes required by public transport. A hackney carriage, contract carriage, JUTA, JCAL, MAXI or another transport operator that holds a Transport Authority licence may quote for the full trip.
Ask for a written quote that names the vehicle, route, total price, currency, passenger capacity, luggage capacity, tolls, fuel, stops, waiting time and taxes. The quote should also state whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger, one way or return, and whether hotel or airport pickup is included.
If you are collecting someone from an airport, provide the flight number and scheduled arrival time. Ask where the meeting point is, what happens if the flight is late, how long waiting time is included and what late-arrival charge applies.
A private transfer is different from a route taxi. The transfer is arranged for your group and priced by the selected operator, while a route taxi is a public stage service paid per passenger.
For more questions to ask before arranging a vehicle, see Hiring a Private Driver in Jamaica: What It Costs and What to Ask.
Rental car
A rental car gives you control over departure time, stops and the final Kingston destination. You drive the south-coast and interior route, then continue east toward Kingston using the road entrance that suits your destination.
The rental total is made up of the company's quotation plus fuel, tolls, insurance or excess, any one-way drop fee and optional equipment. Ask whether the price is per day, per rental or per vehicle, and whether taxes and insurance are included.
You also need to arrange where the car will be returned. A car collected in Negril and returned in Kingston may carry a one-way drop charge. For requirements and road rules, read Driving in Jamaica as a Visitor: Licences, Roads and Rules.
The road route and estimated drive time
The usual direct road route runs from Negril through Savanna-la-Mar, Whitehouse or Black River, Santa Cruz, Mandeville and May Pen, then continues through Spanish Town or Portmore toward Kingston. It uses the A2 and connecting roads, with Highway 2000 available toward Kingston where the selected entry point permits.

Published route descriptions place the distance at approximately 220 to 250 kilometres. Direct driving estimates commonly fall around four to five hours. That is an estimate, not a timetable. For meals on the way, see where to eat on a Jamaican road trip. Traffic, roadworks, weather, stops and the exact Kingston destination can change the arrival time.
The route through Montego Bay, Falmouth, Ocho Rios and the North-South Highway is longer. It makes sense when you need a north-coast stop, but it is not usually the direct choice from Negril to Kingston. For the north coast stretch on its own, see Negril to Ocho Rios across the north coast.
The route passes through several parishes. You can compare transport operators in Westmoreland, Manchester and St. Catherine when arranging different parts of the trip.
Tolls for the road options
The final toll depends on the actual entry and exit points. The Toll Authority's East-West rates effective August 3, 2026 include these cash rates for a Class 1 vehicle, meaning a motor vehicle under 1.7 metres high:
T-Tag rates are lower at some plazas. The exact amount depends on the plazas used by the private vehicle, transfer or rental car.
The North-South Highway has separate rates. For a Class 1 vehicle, Caymanas to Ocho Rios is JMD 2,500 one way on the Toll Authority's August 3, 2026 table and JMD 1,900 on the NROCC schedule effective August 28, 2026. That rate applies to the longer north-coast option, not normally to the direct south-coast route.
Use the Jamaica Highway 2000 and North-South Highway rates and ask the driver or rental company which toll plazas the planned route uses.
What each option costs
Each amount below keeps its own currency and unit.

- Knutsford Express coach: The fare is one way and date-specific. The standard allowance is one checked piece up to 50 pounds plus one carry-on, with extra luggage charged separately. Obtain the fare for your selected date from Knutsford Express.
- Route taxi: J$132 plus J$8.64 per kilometre per passenger, one way, from July 1, 2026. Ask the driver for the fare on each stage; it is not a through fare to Kingston.
- Rural stage bus: Each stage is paid separately. The final total depends on the route, the number of changes and the current fare for each stage.
- JUTC: Route 520Ex links Half-Way Tree with Negril on selected days. Ask JUTC for the current fare and operating days; its other routes serve Kingston and nearby areas.
- Domestic flight: Airlink Express and TimAir require a booking or direct quotation for the date, passengers, aerodrome and aircraft. The JCAA airport charges of US$6.03 for domestic passenger service and US$2.65 for security are separate airport charges, not the complete airfare.
- Private transfer: The operator quotes the price. Ask for the currency, unit, tolls, fuel, luggage, stops, waiting time and taxes in writing.
- Rental car: The total includes the rental quotation, fuel, tolls, insurance or excess, one-way drop fee and optional equipment where applicable.
What to arrange before you pay
Write down the exact arrival point before comparing prices. If you are travelling for a flight, use the full name Norman Manley International Airport and identify the terminal or airport meeting point. If you are travelling to Kingston, provide the hotel name, villa, street address, office, campus or other destination.
Settle these details with the selected service:
- Flight number and scheduled arrival time, if airport pickup is involved.
- Number of adults, children and infants.
- Number, size and weight of bags.
- Child-seat requirements.
- Exact hotel, villa, street address, airport terminal or other destination.
- Total price and currency.
- Whether the price is per vehicle or per passenger.
- Whether the trip is one way or return.
- Tolls, fuel, stops, luggage fees and taxes.
- Waiting time if a flight is late.
- Meeting point and late-arrival procedure.
- Payment method, deposit, cancellation terms and receipt.
For Knutsford Express, remember that the service is office-to-office and does not include hotel drop-offs or extra stops. For public transport, allow time and money for every change. For a flight to Kingston, include transport between the airport and your final address. Once you arrive, Kingston's best restaurants range from rooftops to lunch spots.
After Hurricane Melissa, Norman Manley International Airport closed on October 25, 2025, and government reporting stated that airports reopened within 48 hours, including domestic aerodromes at Negril and Tinson Pen. Jamaica's tourism authority currently states that international and domestic airports are operational and open for commercial flights.
Road corridors were affected by landslides, fallen trees, flooding, scoured pavement and breakaways. On October 31, 2025, the National Works Agency reported progress reopening critical routes, including roads connecting Kingston to Black River. On November 6, 2025, Jamaica Information Service reported restored access along the Mandeville to Black River route through Negril and Montego Bay. On December 13, 2025, JIS reported that transport sectors had returned to normal operations.
Before you travel, check the selected operator's departure, road status, weather notice and cancellation terms before leaving.
Families, groups and mobility needs
A coach may suit you if you want a scheduled service and can travel between the published offices. A private vehicle may suit you if your group has several bags, needs a particular address or wants to avoid changing vehicles. A domestic flight may suit you if the available date and luggage arrangements fit your plans.

For a child, ask the operator these exact questions:
- Can you supply a child seat?
- May the child sit on an adult's lap?
- How will you handle a stroller?
- Is there enough luggage space for our bags and stroller?
For a group, ask:
- What is the vehicle's actual passenger capacity?
- How much luggage can it carry?
- Is the quoted price per vehicle or per passenger?
- Will the group remain together for the full trip?
For a wheelchair or other mobility equipment, ask:
- Does boarding require steps?
- Can the wheelchair remain assembled?
- What folded dimensions and weight do you accept?
- How much time is available at any connection?
- Is assistance available at Negril Aerodrome, Tinson Pen or Norman Manley International Airport?
Describe the equipment clearly, including its dimensions and weight. The answer may differ between a coach, private car and aircraft.
