Airports and ports near St. Elizabeth

The nearest practical commercial airport is Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. From Black River, the road distance is about 70 to 85 km, depending on the route. There is no commercial airport in St. Elizabeth (Airports Authority of Jamaica airport and aerodrome list).

A proposed Treasure Beach aerodrome has been discussed for turboprop aircraft and small private jets, but it should not be treated as an operating airport until its opening status is confirmed. Black River’s Port Hendricks Pier is a cargo and customs facility, not a regular cruise terminal. Montego Bay is the nearest major cruise port.

Buses, coaches and route taxis

Route taxis run on designated routes and may collect or drop off passengers along the way. The Transport Authority lists connections involving Black River, Santa Cruz, Junction, Treasure Beach, Southfield, Whitehouse, Balaclava and rural districts. Check the Transport Authority’s current fare table for the fare between your two towns before you travel.

JUTC’s rural school-bus schedule includes services linking Santa Cruz, Black River, Junction, Gutters, Lacovia, Balaclava, Newell, Aberdeen and Alligator Pond. These are school-bus programme routes, not a general tourist coach network.

For longer inter-parish travel, Knutsford Express lists stops at Luana Main Road, by the Total Gas Station and Juici Patties Rest Stop, and at the Texaco Gas Station in Gutters. Confirm departure times, fares, seat availability and the correct stop directly with the operator.

Main roads

The southern coastal highway connects Santa Cruz, Middle Quarters, Lacovia and Black River. Bamboo Avenue is located on this corridor between Middle Quarters and Lacovia.

Other important roads include Black River to Pedro Cross, Pedro Cross to Junction-Lititz, Malvern to Santa Cruz, Malvern to Southfield, Nain to Emmaus and Luana to Tombstone. The National Works Agency’s St. Elizabeth road inventory lists these and other parish connections. Highway 2000 improvements near Williamsfield are developing, so check current road directions before setting out.

Before you travel

Transport services are spread across Santa Cruz Main Street, Santa Cruz Market Street, Black River Main Street, Luana and Gutters. A coach stop may be at a gas station or rest stop rather than a town-centre bus park.

For early airport departures, late arrivals or rural trips, confirm the pickup point and operating hours in advance. Carry Jamaican dollars and ask about payment before boarding. Licensed public passenger vehicles should display the required red plate and windscreen sticker, while route taxis should show route information on their front doors.
